MK5 Volkswagen: Front Seat Removal Tutorial (Golf, Jetta, GTI, R32, Passat, Rabbit)

In this video I show you how to remove the front seats from your MK5 Volkswagen. This tutorial shows you how to locate and remove the bolts, shows you tools you will need, and gives you tips to safely work around the air bag system, as you have to disconnect air bag sensors. This process should work for Volkswagen Jetta, Golf, Rabbit, GTI, Passat, R32, GLI and more. It specifically applies to cars made between 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, although it may apply past that. Thank you, this was very helpful and easy to follow. Because i am trying to dry out carpet and underlayment, i really didn't have time to order that socket set. They are very hard to find locally. I went to harbor freight and 3 parts stores. Finally, at my second autozone i bought the last 4 piece duralast set for $20. Also, i have manual heated seats and had to disconnect 4 clips

having an issue with a VW beetle with the non power seat not moving when you drop it in the forward position to get to the back seats. the bottom level to move the seat back and forth works fine.

Thansk I hope this is easy. I lost something important that fell in those stupid holes where the seat latches on, the long metal part. Is there any other holes in that long metal part that things might be able to fall farther into the car? Just wondering becuase I’d rather not take the seat off if it’s not going to help.

Hey man I did what you said and this really odd small piece that has a sort of see-saw function fell out. It looks like it attaches to the rails somewhere and I was wondering if maybe this happened for you or anyone else? I have no idea what it's for as my seats all work fine now without it but I do have an airbag light so no idea if its connected to the airbag in some way

To answer a common question in these comments, you *can* drive the car with the seat removed, but the fact that the airbag connectors are unplugged will mean that you get an airbag fault code which will sound a chime on startup (and show a warning message if you have the in-dash message display), turn on the airbag light permanently and disable the airbag system until you reset it using VCDS or similar professional-level scan tool.

So I want to replace the driver seat in my mk5 gti with a leather Jetta seat. My question is, will the wiring harnesses be plug and play with the Jetta seats? If it’s a heated leather seat and I do not wish to retrofit for heat, is it as simple as just not plugging in the heat wiring harness?

Wanting to take a road trip with my 2013 Jetta. Wife had knee surgery. Thinking of removing front seat for the trip and having her sit in the back seat so she can keep her foot up. Is it possible to drive the car with the seat out and disconnected or would the system keep warning you that there was a problem (chimes, alerts, etc). Please advise.

I don't think you' d hurt anything driving with the seat out but you may get chimes for the passenger seatbelt or an airbag light. Give it a shot and see how it goes! I wish your wife a speedy recovery!

If you are careful, you can do it with a T50 Torx like I did. I just attached the T50 bit to a socket which I then connected to my 1/4 inch drive ratchet and it worked like a charm and did so without stripping the bolt heads.

You’re going to need a sort of error code reading or ECU software on laptop with an additional plug. Sorry, probably 20-80 bucks.

What happens if you hook up the battery after you have removed the passenger seat without putting it back in. Will the airbags go off if you hook up the battery and start the car without the seat installed?

Turning the ignition on with any part of the airbag system disconnected means you'll get fault codes which will disable the airbag system, turn on the airbag warning light permanently and sound a chime every time you start the car, and will need to be reset with VCDS or similar professional-level scan tool.

Hi, if you disconnect your battery while you do the job you shouldn't have a problem. If you do you should be able to scan it and delete your trouble codes and the issues SHOULD go away. best of luck!

At 0:33 seconds you show a clip that appears to be dislodged from the track someplace. I show the same piece on my son's 2007 VW Rabbit. The seat will not lock into place so I am guessing that piece may be the culprit. What are your thoughts? Great video.

I can't quite remember what that was for, but it's worth investigating. I'd also try to lube up the locking mechanism at every point that moves to make sure it's moving freely. I had a 2007 Rabbit before this car, it was great!

Make sure you wait the 15 -30min there's a capacitor just in case the battery gets destroyed in a collision this discharges the capacitor by waiting

Or you disconnect both terminals and tie the connectors together with a zip tie. Turn the key to the on position and bingo, everything is now discharged. Im pretty sure that's myth anyway.

There is no need to wait 15-30 min. The airbag capacitor is discharged about 2min after disconnecting the battery.

I've re-installed my seats. Snapped all the pugs back together. And now the airbag light has come on and the power seat doesn't move. Heated seat doesn't work either. Any ideas?

I think you need to reset the airbag which you need a tool for. Also it's possible you mixed up the connectors for the seat and heater

@@Slap_it_in I've never tried but I heard you need to disconnect the battery and don't touch the seats for 30 minutes. Then you can remove them and put them back in. And when you connect the battery the car has no way of knowing that the seats were out because it had no power to think

The negative terminal is the important one, electricity can’t flow without a ground. So yes, it is safe.
