Same engineers they have had for 2 years+ and very little progress in “ramping” in my opinion. The stock is trash. The cars are fucking amazing but I still don’t see how they can make it without more people throwing money at them knowing good and well there is a high probability it will disappear. The leadership is a joke imo. Not that it takes away from the vehicle quality bc it doesn’t. I’ve driven both and had hands on building both at many levels. Quality is good but that doesn’t matter if you can make them affordable or make enough to sell. I hope they make it for sure but wouldn’t get too excited. If anything a company like Amazon should buy them out and fix the bull shit imo.

Killing it? 😂😂😂 They've sold a tiny fraction of the EVs as Tesla. They have no supercharger network like Tesla. They have no Gigapress and Tesla has 3. They brick in Canada weather... won't start and won't let you in. They have no Dojo supercomputer like Tesla. Tesla has millions and millions of driven miles in their FSD computer. When the Cybertruck reaches full steam in January, Rivian is dead and buried... so yeah, "killed by it, not killing it" 🎉

@RiceCube Tech I wouldn't have said anything if the comment was "I hope Rivian succeeds." It's the claim that "Rivian is killing it" that is ridiculous. @@yourlogicalnightmare1014 they could be “killing it” in many ways outside of having dealerships near you lmao. Killing it could refer to their design language. Which they are killing it. But he didn’t say anything about. They could be killing it in their ability to ship a car, which is what the OG comment said. Which IS true. He said nothing about how many dealerships or cars, stock price, FSD miles or whatever you said. He said “they’re killing it” talked about ability to ship then said he wants a cheaper model. Let’s look at Tesla. Their stock price plummeted. Elon is in some hot shit right now. A large portion of the country hates him (who used to love him) the cyber truck is almost half a decade or more behind schedule. And you’re still clinging on hope it’ll be out in January. Teslas far from killing it either. The only reason they have more sales is through bullshit hype marketing and the fact that they’re just a much older EV company.
@yourlogicalnightmare1014 Жыл бұрын
@RiceCube Tech I have zero interest in further debating your astounding ignorance. Fisker Karma has "great design language" which is a meaningless statement as Fisker has proven. Tesla has recently installed 3 gigapresses at their factories which will be pumping out Cybertrucks within 6 mo. Their megapacks are going to be raking in billions of dollars, as will amny other things they have in the queue. Your thumbsucking complaints are already well known and have been for years, and none of it changes the fact that Tesla is years ahead of the competition by every unit of measure. If you weren't so whiny, you'd invest every penny you have in Tesla and 10x your money in the next 3 years. But go ahead and invest in Rivian and rely on hopes & prayers 😃👍

Actually, electreic card predated gasoline powered ones in the late 1800's. In fact, Belgian Camille Jenatzi set a speed records of 100km/60MPH in 1899. When Standard Oil, Firestone and GM got together to take over the vehicle market, they forced cities to change over from street cars to busses. They also priced cars so that gas powered cars became cheaper than electric ones, thus killing that new-born industry.

It can't possibly be the "best" SUV ever, for two reasons: 1. It has a glass roof (what is it with EV makers thinking this is a good idea?). Setting aside the structural compromises that have to be made to have 2 HUGE plates of glass inserted into the roof of the vehicle, this pretty much eliminates any buyers in sun-baked areas, like the entire southwest region of the United States. No amount of tint or "coating" will stop the sun's laser-like beams from penetrating that glass in the Southern Nevada summers. 2. The suspension has MAJOR issues. Throttle House did a review of this SUV and found that it is VERY unstable when turning or making abrupt steering changes at speed. They avoided using the word "unsafe" directly but that's what they meant. NO, I don't expect it to handle like a sports car but if I'm ever in a situation where I need to swerve really fast in order to avoid a collision, I don't want the back end coming out from behind me and causing said collision to happen anyway. I really wanted this vehicle. I am a proponent of competitive innovation and I think companies like Tesla need rivals in order to keep things healthy. Unfortunately, until the above issues are resolved, I'm probably going to have to look elsewhere.

I do a fair amount of offroading, and I met a guy with an R1T at an off-road park a while back. He could do with his truck probably 90% of the things I could do in my very modified '93 4Runner, and my only real advantage was ground clearance, and the shorter wheel base should help a little with that. I'm sure there's some stuff he could do with all that power that I couldn't, too. So assuming the R1S is comparable, it is even pretty incredible from that perspective (although obviously recharging in the middle of nowhere is an issue).

What kind of doofus would take a luxury truck that costs nearly $100k offroad anywhere? Dents, scratches, and accidents are just a few things that happen to vehicles offroading. By offroading, I'm not referring to the curb at a local mall... but more of a place like MOAB. The problem with the Rivian is weight, long wheelbase, and width of truck. All of those hurt you offroad, especially on narrow trails. Older vehicles are great for offroad because of a short wheelbase, less length and width (compact size), and parts are easy to repair and less expensive.

On one side of the argument, yes: the lights are a bit odd. Quite unusual. But the flipside of that argument, in my opinion, makes up for it: most EVs have ugly and featureless fronts. Looking at you, Tesla. The Rivian models are a welcome departure with some design that actually has some character despite the lack of a need for a grille that is traditionally used for a big part of said character.
@manofthehour6856 Жыл бұрын
Extremely well presented, thank you! I saw one of these yesterday and was not aware it existed. I have seen a couple of the pickups (ugh, the model names are forgetable), so was aware that the company's wares have actually trickled into my area. From articles I have read and the timeline of manufacturer's, the electric vehicles will be coming fast and furious over the next few years, and with that is competitive pricing. Related to this is the microwave oven which Amana introduced in 1967 retailing at $495. Watch a 50-year old episode of The Price is Right, and an Amana Radarrange was often featured, and quite expensive. It and air conditioners were luxury items in the 1970s, but now, very accessible between development costs and reduced with each unit sold, ever-improving technology. Interestingly, Amana still makes a Radarrange, and it is expensive compared to the ordinary common ones available for less than $100, but the Radarrange is more high end, made in the USA with the associated labor costs, and no where near what $495 in 1967 money equates to today in 2023: $4,000. Around 1980 is when Microwaves started to get a solid foothold in the American home, and soon to be followed by the VCR. Buying a video of your favorite film on VHS was $79.95 in the mid 1980s! In 1980s money!. So indeed, we are living and watching in real time a very obvious transition towards better (longer range) and less expensive electric vehicles. Along with the immediate and plentiful torque that provides performance once beyond even Supercar 0 to 60 times, the less expensive repair and maintenance costs to operate a much simpler machine, and the reduced cost of power (electric charging versus gasoline pump), most of the stumbling blocks impeding the progress of electic vehicles will be removed for the public at large. Yes, price is the last frontier to be knocked down, but after hearing about electric cars for years and considering them a folly, the momentum has increased incredibily in the past ten and especially five years. We are living in some intriquing high-tech times.

Great review. I really like Rivians. I'm going to make an unpopular prediction: Electric vehicles will stay in that luxury, minority-of-cars space for much, much, much longer than anyone thinks. Gas will continue for the foreseeable future. The elephant in the room is batteries, battery materials, global battery supply chains, battery lifecycles, battery costs, etc. The sum total of battery hurdles will keep them in the land of luxury and conspicuous consumption for many years, and I think that nations and states with aggressively optimistic policies on EV adoption will be forced to walk those back when reality sets in.

I like the prediction and agree. Our economy is way too precarious as it is. The only thing in common is that they both have four wheels and a battery. Only half kidding. Not even close. I just returned from a trip to the South Carolina coast from Chicago. Charging was nary an issue. Yes Tesla’s headstart shows in the infrastructure but for the 5% use case of charging publicly? Not a big deal. And we have towed our trailer too.

They are like the second company that comes to mind after Tesla, but they are quickly becoming the better option for so many reasons(I.e. quality control, good designs, UI, and overall good plan for future EVs). Of course, it all come down to if they can get that price down for some of their future vehicles, because it they can get the R3 to 40k maybe even 30k, then it would be a real game changer and would be a real contender for for my first big car purchase when it comes out.

Nice, I would hate a white interior ( I feel the same way about white kitchens), but way out of the price range that I would be willing to pay for. If you get out into the hinterlands, like where I live, and see how few charging stations there are, electric cars seem like fiction. I live in an apartment complex and there's no way we'll get charging stations here unless someone else is paying for them. I am still unconvinced that running an electric car is cheaper than running a gasoline engine. I'd like to see a video from you where you discuss in depth the various charging platforms and how much it costs to charge a variety of vehicles. I may sound like a nonbeliever, and I am not an average consumer, things would need to be in a price range where I would be willing to spend and the charging infrastructure needs to be more convenient to make it worth my while.

You buy an EV because you want it, it’s something different, you want to be one of the first to adopt it, you like the way it drives with the instant torque. I drive a 2022 BMW I4 M50. I like it because it doesn’t look like an EV. But beside the very smooth driving to drop my kids at Daycare….. there is something amazing about instant no lag no down shift acceleration of 540 horsepower vehicle that stays planted to ground due to the heavy battery and pushes you back that I just love.
