Special thanks to everyone who helped make this glitch a reality:
-I spent a lot of time talking with Ejay ( / @ejayb ) and Justin ( / @justin3055 ) about making the glitch work, especially making it faster in a flap
-Charlie ( / @charl1e ) was the first one to show that it was even possible to reach 0 roll speed through repeated wheelies.
Ben ( / @mkwiiben ) also got this, and him sending me his ghost helped me partially understand how it works, in addition to motivating me to work more on the ultra (Specifically, I learned that your roll speed never actually reaches exactly 0 during the wheelies, but instead jumps from ~0.00000x (this is a floating point value so there's a lot more digits than I typed out) down to exactly 0 after about a second of being upside down. I honestly have no idea why this happens, or why it's so hard to get it to happen. Not to mention the fact that it's increasing right before it jumps to 0?? Your z rotation itself doesn't even reach 0, like wtf. in this case it was stationary at like 0.01)
-Malleo ( / shwamalleomk ) made a custom info display script that let me monitor my roll speed, which helped a lot while I was working on the setup and trying to understand the glitch
I honestly can't believe this actually worked. Seeing this tech finally have a use on a nintendo track is just so cool. I keep thinking we must be getting to a point where big discoveries are gonna start slowing down but they just keep happening :o
Some other questions you may have:
Couldn't you just jump off around the finish line?
-For years now that's been the main idea for getting this ultra, but it just doesn't seem possible. The finish line just extends way too far out. How weird is it that they made the finish line go miles out on this track, but on tracks like wgm and rsl it hardly even extends out past the road??
How were you able to maintain your barrel roll without constantly doing wheelies?
-Normally barrel rolls cancel when both of your wheels touch the ground, but since I'm driving on the edge of the road, my wheels aren't actually touching the ground
Why did you have to get the barrel roll when you were already inside the wall?
-In addition to having a speed cap of 15, barrel rolls will also instantly cancel if you're ever in the air for 20 or more frames. So there's really no way to get out of bounds if you already have one
Could you respawn closer to the finish line?
-With a different setup, probably. I didn't spend too long optimizing the flap or looking for strats since there's probably gonna be a bigger collab tas some time in the future
Is this viable for a 3lap tas?
-Maybe. More testing still needs to be done on that. being limited to 15 speed for so long kinda sucks u_u
