For people who are lost, here's some of the rules that were broken: 0:00 don't bunt when greatly ahead/don't get your power hitter to bunt 0:15 Act like you've been there. Don't admire your homerun or showboat. (It's perfectly acceptable to celebrate on a walk-off or game winning play) 0:24 don't tag too hard (this is what Machado thought, turns out he was just being a hothead and apologized later) 0:35 Pitchers should wait until the manager gets to the mound before leaving 0:46 Don't bunt to break up a no hitter 0:57 Takeout slides have been illegal for about a year 1:06 Excessive tag. Belcher used a racial slur against Chan Ho Park, which started the fight 1:18 Don't admire a home run (act like you've done it before. That was Fernandez's first home run so there should've been some slack) 1:32 I don't know (probably don't throw a tantrum when you fly out) 1:38 Bat flip/Showboating 1:58 Don't tag excessively 2:11 Don't take your sweet time getting into the batter's box, also some shit talking 2:19 Don't steal third with 2 outs/Don't steal when greatly ahead or behind 2:28 Not an unwritten rule, that was just disrespectful
@quartzimaging

If you can steal third with two outs, go ahead and steal third. No disrespect there. It's called manufacturing runs. (stealing any base with a huge lead is another story...)

Stealing third is really hard, and not really a good idea with 2 outs. You don't want to be that guy who ended the inning because you thought you could snag it

The Cynical Martian for the first one..if you don’t want me to bunt don’t play a shift..bunting is smart against the shift no matter the score. That’s the beauty of baseball, you can be down a lot late in a game and still end up winning. So you never stop competing until that final pitch is thrown

You're cutting the clips off too short. Let the play run first, have the announcers discuss it, and then show a final replay. There are a lot of great clips in here that I would've liked to see the aftermath of that got cut off. Just a suggestion, great video!

I'll admit that one really has to play the game or watch a lot of it to understand without explanation. I've played and watched for 30 years and It's mostly about etiquette but a lot of these clips I can tell it's personal/bad blood between players/teams (rivalries). There are all kinds of unwritten rules like not lingering in the batter's box to watch your hit become a home run (if it's obviously not going foul) and don't tag someone harder than necessary or try to shove them off the bag after they're called safe. Don't chuck your bat at the other team's dugout if you're mad about the call or in celebration. There's a whole unspoken thing about intentional hits by pitchers (usually retribution) which is complicated and kind of childish. Check out some ejection compilations and you can see a lot of these rules written or unwritten being violated. It's my favorite sport and I love it so much and I'm sorry if I came off like a jerk and I'm more than willing to spell anything out for you if you're truly interested.

Hey charles, what i am interested is in the bunts. I saw some clips where the batter will bunt the ball and get to first base, yet that was crossing the line; why? Thanks!
@charlescoulon7336

I saw a comment somewhere on this video that said you couldn't see the score in the clips and apparently the teams bunting had a pretty good lead so there's really no need to be bunting so it's frowned upon.

If "don't steal when greatly ahead or behind" is an unwritten rule, the same should apply to swinging for the fences in that situation. Did McGwire and Sosa ever hold off from swinging too hard if their teams had a big lead or deficit in 1998?

@xygomorphic44
@xygomorphic44 6 жыл бұрын
For those who need an explanation, because this video did a terrible of of explaining what the "Unwritten" rules were broken are, here you go: 0:00 Either bunted to break up a no hitter or to beat the shift. Sometimes the defense will "shift" (for example the third baseman will move toward center field) to set up a strategic play or because they think the batter might hit the ball in that direction. Beating the shift is when you bat the ball into the empty part of the field created by the shift. 0:13 Stared at his home run too long before he ran the bases. 0:24 Third baseman didn't run toward third, instead ran directly to runner to try and force him out of the baseline. 0:41 Knew the pitching coach was going to do a pitching change and left before he came to the mound. 0:46 Not sure on this one, probably bunted to break up a no hitter or perfect game. 0:58 Late slide. Slid into the second baseman to try and break up the double play. 1:07 Tagged him for too long. More like a long touch than a quick tag. 1:16 Stared at his home run and stayed at the plate. 1:27 Bat flip but did it side armed and probably too hard. 1:37 Bat flip. Bat can flips CAN be seen as insulting, but usually not like that. Puig and Bumgarner are playing for division rivals and theyv'e had issues with each other in the past. It could have been the way he did it. 1:48 Not sure on this one. Pitcher might have caught it for an out and either him or the battle yelled an insult to the other. 1:57 Touched second base in time to be safe, but the tag attempt was too aggressive when it wasn't really THAT close. 2:07 Conversation between batter and catcher, batter probably told him to hurry up. 2:18 Steals third pretty easily, but Tampa is already 5 runs ahead of Boston. 2:28 Was walked, and put the bat in front of the catcher instead of placing it out of the field of play. 2:36 Not sure on this one. Threw behind the batter? Please correct me if any of these are wrong. I did my best.

@kqatsi
@kqatsi 6 жыл бұрын
T Hakenson Machado ran right into the tag, which made it a much easier play than making the relatively long throw to first. And it's way less risky because Machado could score if anything went wrong with the throw. And the only reason he "jumped in front" of him is because Machado was trying to avoid the tag. It was just a bad play on Machado's part.

For me, stealing third with two outs in the bottom of the 7th when you're team is winning 8-3 really isn't that bad. That's hardly a blowout. Bottom of the 8th might be just a bit different, because the other team only has 1 inning left. But bottom of the 7th, when the other team has 2 innings to score 5 runs? Come on.

I watched a minor league game yesterday there were two stupid plays.In the bottom of the 9th the lead off hitter got a base hit and they didn't count it because of a ball in the backstop. The damn ump said, time! And even the other team was weirded out.in the 7th the away team bunted and there was a horrible throw from the pitcher but they callled the base runner out for interfering with the throw!

Cougar4 Cougar4 sorry for that rant haha but unwritten rules are like manners in a way like Youre suppose to know you don't eat with your mouth open . Like the first one, you don't bunt when you're blowing out a team. Others are don't stare at the home run ball, no bat throwing , not showing emotion , not bunting during a no hitter , can't talk trash , don't leave the pitching mound until the manager is there , not tagging a player who isn't on the base path , sliding into players , blocking the catcher from throwing a base stealer , and of course NO CELEBRATION. Some are okay like being disrespectful but other rules are jut straight retarded

throwing at a player's arm or leg when they've been rude is one thing. Throwing up and in behind the head is quite another. No unwritten rule is worth risking seriously hurting a player. Also, pitchers who do this when someone stands and watches their home run are babies. Same with pitchers who do this with the bat flip. Grow up. Seriously.

The posters who are saying that baseball players are too sensitive are not old enough to remember the NFL when it was a real man's game. They once asked Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus what would've happened if an opposing wide out did a flip in the end zone after catching a TD pass during his days. His reply, "We wouldn't have intentionally broken his leg. I'm dead serious. And the officiating crew would have done nothing to stop it. No ejections or anything. It's why no one celebrated in the end zone back then. Nowadays there is zero payback because if you try to get back at a disrespectful player, they fine you and sit you out 6 games, which can legitimately hurt your team's playoff run in football because unlike MLB, the NFL only plays so many games." Also, the unwritten codes of baseball have been in play since the game's creation. It's not about hurt feelings. It's about honoring the games codes and traditions, and honoring the players who have come before. The Cy Young's. The Don Drysdale's. The Willie Mays'. The Roger Hornsby's. The MLB front office are a bunch of jerks who are dishonoring the game by not allowing the players to sort out their own business. It's the way this great American game has always been played since it's inception. For heaven sakes, can we have a sport where athletes don't show off

No, it’s about hurt feelings. It’s about pitchers who can’t take responsibility for playing badly so all they have is to say that batters “disrespectful” because they dare celebrate a home run. Does it not spark some idea in your brain that maybe Butkus should play better and shut his fucking mouth when a player celebrates. If you intentionally injure someone because they celebrated, you’re not only pathetic, but you shouldn’t be playing at all. Don’t give me this bullshit about “dishonour” if you don’t want your opponents to score then learn to fucking play better, players are getting paid millions, I think you can handle a celebration. For heaven’s sake, can we have a sport where players don’t intentionally injure opponents for basically no reason.

Unwritten rules are fucking stupid. I only get pissed off when the players don't hustle. if it's a monster home run, i really don't care, but on close plays, you gotta run. As a cub fan, I remember when Baez got thrown out at second for watching his hit in the nlds. But for everything else, like bunting while up by like 8 runs is just stupid. Baseball is a weird game. The indians came back from a 12 run deficit once, hell the rangers scored 30 runs once.

The problem with the whole unwritten thing is that everything has become an unwritten rule, and because of that, fans want to get rid of all unwritten rules. Truth is, there are some real unwritten rules, and they should continue to stay in place. Rules that have existed since the beginning of the game. The guy at 0:13 ? That's an unwritten rule. That would result in a guy like Satchel Paige throwing at the guy's HEAD his next at bat. Not saying I approve of head hunting, but that was the way it was done back then. I like the Bob Gibson method where you hit them where it hurts but don't threaten their lives. You never, ever disrespect a pitcher. EVER. It is the number one unwritten rule in the game. Most of all, it is so unnecessary, and it sets a bad example for kids regarding sportsmanship. Problem is, if the guy at 0:13 were thrown at in his next at bat, the umps would treat it like it was nuclear war. The catcher knew that, so he had to defend his pitcher. In the old days, the guy would just get hit and that would be the end of it. But he would get hit so hard that he wouldn't do it again. And MLB and the umps never ejected pitchers for doing such things. It was a part of the game that players self-regulated. It should continue to be self-regulated. It's part of what used to make the game great and different from other sports....the true unwritten rules. That being said, it seems like the newer players need to talk to older guys like Willie Mays and Bob Gibson about what really are the unwritten rules. There are actually very few true unwritten rules. It needs to be sorted out. Sadly, some of the dummy players today don't even know who Bob Gibson is. Players these days generally lack a historical knowledge of the game....at least the ones I've met.

I don't care what inning it is if my team is down three or less I'm laying one down...period. I think if some a--hole stands there ,flips his bat or whatever after a homer (first ,tenth or fiftieth) it should be o.k. to put one between his shoulder blades. And I didn't know you couldn't take out the man turning a double play ?!?! Sports is just getting way too pussy these days

Moon Byulyi Mostly its a sportsmanship thing. Jose essentially taunting another pitcher (regardless of the fact it was his first). Cabrera got angry at having his fingers smashed by the ball though it didnt seem on purpose, so the rule there would be tagging somewhere other than on the fingers while on the ground/plate like that. The bunting one was the guy bunted (while his team was 0 vs the other team having 7) just to break up the pitcher's NH (no hitter). Which imo was the scummiest thing, because regardless of the arguments people make about getting a hit no matter what, it was done pretty clearly out of spite against such a good pitcher.

Just to be clear I've been a baseball fan since the mid 2000's. Baseball players get too butt hurt, football has dancing in the end zone, basket ball has emotional dunks and 3's. But the second a person even stares at a home run its wrong. This is why baseballs fan growth is stagnating compared to other sports, the fire/emotion that brings excitement is usually deterred by these unwritten "rules"

Baseball is actually in a golden age lmao. Highest WBC fan attendance by far, overall increase in attendance across almost every stadium, big net gain increases for almost every ball club, and most of all it was the most played sport (youth sport) amongst youngsters last year (boys and girls).

Youth sports participation is down across the board because there are less children now. www.indexmundi.com/graphs/population-pyramids/united-states-population-pyramid-2016.gif You'd have to determine the rate of kids playing baseball to make a more accurate conclusion on whether the game is becoming more or less popular.

This is super poorly edited. i can't even tell what unspoken rule they're breaking. Like one guy hit a home run then it cuts to them saying he did some 21 year old things in that sequence... like what? you didn't show it.

he stared at the home run, which personally I think is completely fine considering he was a pitcher and that was (I think) his first career home run
