MLB's Free Agency is OUT of control... With Spring Training officially under way, a large majority of baseball's top free agents have yet to be signed to a roster. Former MVP Cody Bellinger and reigning-Cy Young Blake Snell are still looking for a contract just a week away from March.
Here's how Rob Manfred and Major League Baseball can fix the long-standing problem with free agency and "mega-agents" like Scott Boras blocking the path for fans, players, and teams to get the season underway.

A deadline could work great, but what happens to a player if they aren't signed by the deadline, are they just not allowed to play the next season?

I think after the deadline, contacts are limited to 2.5 mill or something. Whatever the number that they consider is low enough. But that way they sign before that deadline, and other players can still get signed

Well teams would be in a bind just as much as the players if they didn’t sign players by the deadline, so I don’t think too many players would go unsigned past the free agency deadline. Plus, you could open it back up for a period after spring training or a few weeks into the season. So that any stragglers can still be signed but with the downside of having to miss spring training or even a few weeks of the regular season. I think that would motivate most teams and players to get deals done during the signing period.

Been saying this since 2019, but Scott Boras has been slowly ruining the free agency process for all parties involved. These players that hold out for too long to sign and only get 1/2 or a 1/3 of ST reps leads to them having a noticeably down year by their career standards and opens them up to a higher risk of injury, both of which again hurts all parties involved...except for the Boras Corp.

Deadline is a must. Or every star will go to Yankees or Dodgers eventually. The little more they will gain is a small percentage and meaningless to a well led life. Would they go to a team that will make them happy... only with evil intent.

The owners keep squeezing the players. They reduce draft bonuses. They cap IFA spending. They manipulate service time. They milk the players for all their worth in their early years, push their bodies to the literal breaking point. Use arbitration as leverage to keep the salaries down. Once they finally reach free agency, they have lost value because they are "too old" or "injury prone." And really only a handful of teams engage the top free agents. Those that do now have "the Cohen tax" to keep them in line. Now you want to artificially limit the signing period because the OFF SEASON is too dull? Aren't there enough artificial limits placed on their earning potential?

Baseball has a significant problem, and the free agency situation is just one of them. The knee-jerk reaction is Greed, but let's drill down a bit. Let's start at the top. Manfred is not a baseball person. His changes are just catering to the media and their desire. Owners expect cities to pay for their stadium and expect a new stadium every 30 to 35 years. Look at how Rhinesdorf (intentional misspelling) is trying to blackmail Chicago to spend 1billion for a new Sox stadium. The present Sox stadium is approx. 30 years old. If I am playing for these greedy folk, i am going to learn the same mentallity. Next throw in manipulative player agents, who have watched the owners get everything they have asked. I have minimized these issues for time sake, but who winds up paying. The middle class has been forced out of the stadiums, but are expected to pay for them. It is almost impossible to see a favorite teams game on TV, unless you pay a subscription fee. Then you are subjected to hundreds of commercials. I have been a lifelong fan, remember attending games as far back as '67. I no longer have interest in attending a major league ballgame, or even following my team on television. Baseball is broke. The middleclass is no longer a part of the game.

Snell is going to be a tough buy for most teams "good pitcher that wont go more than 6 innings a game, walks a lot, only had amazing seasons when he was going to get traded, wants the big bucks and the long term contract i mean his counter to the yankies was crazy enough where i think most teams will skip on him

@@hopespringseternal2624 tell me I'm wrong he had amazing years when he was going to get traded then average to slightly above average years in between, he doesn't want to pitch more than 6 innings a game and led the league in walks last year he had such a low ERA because of grounding people into doubles and have a great defense and he wants a long term high paying contract tell me which one of these are a lie and that it's not a tough buy for any team especially when spring training started and most lineups are already filled
