in baseball, for pitchers it's generally sticky substances like pine tar or spider tack. pitchers like these substances for the added grip they can give on a ball resulting in better pitches. the legal way to get a better grip on the ball for pitchers would be a rosin bag which you oftentimes see a pitcher use between throws. it dries up their hand for a better grip, like how an olympist uses chalk for grip and stability.

No it does not make it break better or anything. Pitches that are off speed you want minimal friction so the ball slides off your fingers. Pine tar is really sticky so it adds friction. If it helps any pitch it only helps the control of your fastball. It doesn't help speed or break of any kind. Personally I think it's ok especially on cold wet nights cause it make keep the ball from plunking the batter in the head

They miss the pitcher's for Houston cause a couple of they were using something. Even the umpire said he never saw a curveball move like that. Same thing the players were saying. Just watch a replay and watch what the one guy does. Plays with his hair then touches the sweat on his face with only 2 fingers then his wrist on his glove hand. Please it was so obvious he was using something. Most likely hair gel a few of them have been using hair gel. MLB needs to start taking these world series away from teams cheating. So i get a spit ball, or a Vaseline ball, or a scuffed ball. They will fly funny or curve much much faster. There are OBVIOUSLY CHEATING when doing that. But Pine Tar doesn't do that. It has ZERO effect on the flight of the baseball. What it actually does it makes the pitcher have MORE grip on the ball, so if you are going to throw a Curveball you want as little grip as possible or something slimy like spit so that the ball slides off your finger with minimal friction. Pine tar adds friction cause it's sticky. It doesn't help with the fight or movement at all. It's the opposite in fact it gives the pitcher a bit more control on straight pitches but ZERO break on off speed pitches. I think pine tar should be ok for pitchers. It may keep them from beaning batters specially on cold wet nights.
