I love Tucker, but teams not named the Dodgers that sign mega-deals don't stay competitive. That's it. The Astros have been competitive because they build talent, not buy it.
@TranslateToEnglish6 күн бұрын
They built talent by trading away all of their veterans, had 3 or 4 - 100 loss seasons, picked first in the draft all of those seasons and built prospects that were can’t miss minor leaguers. I was here during those 100 loss seasons.

As a lifelong Astros fan, I'll explain why most fans are happy about this trade. 1. Jim Crane have been very vocal about not passing out long-term contracts (over 6 years of guaranteed money) so we were not going to extend him no matter how many wanted ownership to. We saw way to many of our best players over that last few years walk for free and this was a change from that. 2. Tucker is a great player but last year he was injured for big chunk last year and we were still able to compete. I know that most sleep on our farm system but we have a bunch of outfield bats in AAA that are waiting for a chance as well as our top OF prospect (Jacob Melton). Pedro Leon is someone the Astros signed a few years ago out of Cuba that is going to be looked at during spring training. Everyone is focused on the Isaac Paredes part of this trade but the real jewel is Cam Smith. He is a Top 100 prospect that can hold down 3rd base for a long time in the future. Paredes is the short-term and Smith is the long-term answer at 3rd base. Wesneski is just cream on the top, a local product that will help with fan engagement just like Arrighetti. 3. There is only 1 player that the Astros view as "untouchable" and that is Jose Altuve. As he gets older, we have to also get younger around him so that we can still compete each year. Astros fans are not like Yankees or Dodgers fans, we do not expect success by buying or overpaying for talent, we cultivate and grow talent and that is why we are successful year after year. We already have seen what aging players on long-term contracts look like (i.e. Albert Pujols, Angels contract) and that is not something that we want. Good teams trade to get better, Great teams trade to get better with a plan

As a fellow life long Astros fan I agree. I think Yordan is nearing the untouchable point, and will become the untouchable one once Altuve retires. IMO. The Tucker loss stings, but we were gonna lose him anyways, so getting something back is a good eal. Also, great job bringing up Leon! The 'Stros have been good at getting international talents that other teams have slept on. I expect that to continue.

Brian one thing you're forgetting is losing top talent because of free agency is something the Astros fan base is used to. At least this time they got a return before he walked. I still think they should've went for it this season with Tucker and figured out the rest later but the trade definitely does help the future. Oh and another reason the fan base isn't that pissed is because it's the off-season and we're not seeing it on the field yet

I think it's funny how many people seem to have a crystal ball telling them what a player will do in 2025. Paredes is 25 years old. He's played 3 full major league seasons. He hit 20hr with 70rbi his rookie year in Tampa. That's not a hitters park at all. He hit 31hr with 98 RBI his second year. Last season he was part of a trade to the Cubs. He hit 19hr with 71rbi. I think a full season at Minute Made park and he'll hit 30hr with 100 rbi. Just like Tucker. If the Astros get Arenado cheap, he's been slumping a little for the last couple years, but I think he would be a big improvement in the line up over Meyers, McCormick, Dubon, Singleton, and any player we put in when Tucker was injured. Arenado may not be the superstar he used to be, but he's an improvement in the lineup. There's potential for a 270, 20hr season. The Astros still need an impact bat in the OF to be contenders again. I think Paredes replaces Tucker's bat, Arenado replaces Bregmans bat, and then one addition would be an improvement for the Astros offense.

Crane has proven over the years that he is not cheap. But he has also proven that he doesn't seem to know WHEN to spend and WHEN to be cheap. He has bad timing. Spend tons on closers like Montero yet nothing on franchise cornerstone entering his prime. To do what? HOPE a prospect (suspect) is as good as what you already had??? Be frugal when it truly benefits the team. Get out of your damn comfort zone and step up to the plate and spend on those rare moments like a Tucker coming up. You want sustained success, you have to know when to go for it, when to not, when to adapt your long time habits to the times. Maybe not for a Bregman but for a Tucker? Yes.
