I have two sons with Down syndrome there is no cure for Down syndrome. One of my sons is 19 and he goes to a day program where they go out into the community and do all kinds of activities, they go to the museums, they volunteer, they do all kinds of things. He loves going. He also has leukemia and I decided that he didn't need to try to work somewhere. I just want him to have fun and enjoy his life. My other son is 13 and when he is old enough he will be going to a day program too.

I cringe at the “haven’t you always wanted to be your own boss?” argument. My husband owned a business and was self employed for 12 years and it was a nightmare. Now he has a steady government job with benefits and retirement- it feels like a dream. Being your own boss definitely is not for everyone.

if you work for an MLM, you are absolutely *not* your own boss. you don’t own the business. you effectively own a franchise which you have to continually pay your boss for. it’s insane that they even try to use that argument because it’s such a lie! very cringey indeed 😂

Yes! My husband owns his own business and it sucks. He has to deal with employees, customers, workers comp, payroll, maintenance, etc. He works harder and longer than any employee. I have an hourly paid job and carry our benefits and don't worry about that place at all after I clock out. I frequently wonder why so many people want to own their own business, they clearly haven't actually owned a business before.

@@blueviolet-ev8hx Hi there I understand what you're saying, it can be a real headache. I come from a long line of small business owners. The biggest headache my whole family agree is staff stealing. My brother has caught staff stealing from him, big amounts where they start buying new cars and taking expensive trips, that's always been how he's found out. My parents had a similar experience, the most upsetting one was a staff member they trusted and invited to my wedding who had a thieving operation running each Thursday for years when my parents had their one day off a week. She had all the other staff afraid to say anything and her husband would bring their car up to the food supplies which in her trusted position she had the keys for and would steal a week's whole food shopping list. It's nasty and outrageous.

I can understand why that mother would want her daughter to have fewer difficulties in life, but that "normal" comment makes me feel like she was embarrassed of her daughter's differences from others that were there through no fault of her own! Which is really sad 😔 I honestly feel more sad for that girl because of her mother's attitude than because of her physical difficulties.

I have to comment on the breast milk thing. I’m so glad this lady sent this email and I agree with her. I didn’t have trouble breast feeding my 2nd two, but I did with my oldest and then my twins. My twins never latched and by the time they were 3 weeks old I had spent almost every minute trying to feed, the pumping then feeding again because the boys just weren’t latching. I was already struggling with deep PPD. My middle son (3 at the time) was sobbing at my door that he needed mama, I wasn’t getting any sleep and my older 3 were practically being ignored. I caved and we switched the boys to formula for which we had to apply for WIC to afford. But the guilt I felt and dealt with was crippling for a long time and stuff like this lady was talking about make me angry as well. So thank you for sending that in!! Erika

Breast feeding is ideal IF you can do it. AND evidence suggests the benefits actually dissipate as the child gets older. Contrary to popular lore, women always needed help feeding their infants. The affluent hired wet nurses and lower income people would help nurse within their families or close friends. This notion that you can do it all after pushing a whole human out of your body is ridiculous. I hope you have absolved yourself of this needless guilt.

I had my first baby 6 months ago and I had so much breast milk that for the first 4-5 months I basically had 2-3 completely wet shirts each day. (Even with nursing pads and a nursing bra). My chest was in pain a lot of the time and my baby struggled to feed because all the milk came shooting out so fast that he spent most of the feeding time coughing and getting hickups. Yet I have been told so often that I shouldn´t complain about my situation or seek advice on how to reduce milk supply since it seemed like bragging.

I breastfed my daughter for 8 months and 10 days. I love her so incredibly much, but I cried everyday. There was SO MUCH pressure and shame to just keep breastfeeding even though I was suffering physically, mentally, and emotionally. Incidentally, this was also the first time I was pitched an MLM (DoTerra) and it made me so infuriated I became very vocal about pseudo-scientific fear mongering companies and their mouthpieces targeting moms and the public at large; as a scientist I focused most of my ire at the science because I didn't even know about how damaging the MLM structure itself is. My daughter is absolutely amazing and she just celebrated her 8th birthday on the 4th. She tells me at least once a day that I am the best mom ever. Fed is best!

the airbonne breastfeeding thing really got me. For context, I had my first child in late October 2020. I managed to breastfeed for 2 weeks, and was lucky enough to have a very very good supply. But, at around the 2 week mark, I was having extreme pain in my chest. Turned out I had a severe case of gallstones and would need surgery. While waiting for surgery, I was in and out of the hospital (without my baby and with no visitors), I could barely eat, was dropping weight like crazy, and even when I could pump in the hospital I couldn't use the milk since I had been given morphine for my pain (something that can be dangerous in breast milk). My partner and I made the decision to transfer my son to formula. Now, almost 2 years later, I can say putting him on formula was the best choice we made. my supply never came back, and being able to share feedings with my partner made a huge positive impact on my mental health. seeing people try to shame others over their supply, or their choice to formula feed upset me so much. A fed baby is a happy baby, no matter how they are being fed. Thank you for mentioning that and making it clear - there is still so much shame attached to how people feed their babies, and however people decide to feed their babies it should be celebrated - whether that is breastfeeding, formula feeding, or a combination. After all, in their toddler years all babies will try and eat dirt at least once.

The one with Down Syndrome hit hard for me. The mom saying her daughter is finally a "normal person" is absolutely sickening to me. One of my problems with MLMs is that they tend to prey on various groups of disabled people and one of the ways they go about that is normalizing the concept that we (disabled people) are essentially not real people, are undesirable, and are unacceptable; it does so much damage to all of us but especially to young people with disabilities. It sounds like this young woman's mother already thought that way about her daughter and that the mlm(s) have solidified and validated the belief that her daughter is less than fully valuable and isn't enough.

I agree about being able to return beauty products. If you spend money on it and it doesn't work for you/you have a reaction, why shouldn't you be able to return it? Yeah, I know they throw the product out and maybe that is wasteful, but I think Ulta/Sephora/whatever store will be just fine financially so let's stop worrying about them.

@dilsyy

@@maychung3104 I found my message to them. Sephora Bulgaria told me that they need certified proof of an allergic reaction in the form of a document. Then I would need to go to the Sephora where the product was purchased and fill in some more documents. Then they would send those to France (I assume where the headquarters are) and wait for them to decide if I will get a refund. I also have to return the product to them when filling in the documents. It is so bizarre... I didn't have a strong reaction so I really didn't want to waste time on a doctor appointmen. It was a gift from a friend, so I just returned it to her to use since she liked the prodct anyway.
@charliewright6273

Definitely call corporate on that one. Because it's Sephora company policy that you get 60 days with a receipt, your beauty insider account, or the card you bought it with to return it. No questions asked, as long as most of the product is still there. It's not a country by country policy: it's straight from corporate. And usually if you call their customer service, they're good about issuing one-time credits to help negate a bad experience, even if you're outside the return period.

Don't forget to get a doctor's note in most cases you would need an appointment to get a doctor's note. So that means for a lot of people paying for an office visit or a copay(up to 80 bucks in some cases, yeah American Health Care truly wonderful) plus going to the doctors office which for many/most people means taking a day off of work. And what if your symptoms resolve before you can see your doctor?

I was almost recruited into mary kay (the rep, upon me telling her I couldn’t afford the starter package because I was living paycheck to paycheck, said that’s why I need to sell mary kay more than anyone else). the reps biggest mistake was inviting me to an “initiation” meeting where there was chanting and reciting oaths and I was like “oh so this is a cult” (i was also privy to a zoom call where she was grilling her own (college attending) daughter on why she wasn’t “selling, selling, selling” and “oh you talked to another woman for five minutes? did you recruit her???”). it was also apparent that the rep was preying on Jehovah’s Witness women because for the most part they stick to a traditional family model where the husband is the primary breadwinner and the wife is a homemaker (would it be nice to make a little extra income?). this felt super predatory and I decided then and there I was never going to contact this woman ever again. I got a free starbucks out of it though!

yes people can be allergic to literally anything, so its impossible to have a truly hypoallergenic product. I'm somewhat allergic to cold, and also lots of random things (haven't tracked down exactly what yet) and I can confirm it can be literally anything

I haven’t watched the video, but the title has my blood boiling already. I worked with individuals with developmental challenges while in university, many with Down Syndrome…I hate MLMs, and the fact they are so predatory already…and they’re targeting people with challenges who may not fully understand what they’re getting into? Oh heck to the no. Thanks for bringing attention to this, Hannah! Edited, noticed a typo!

Beachbody has actually been an MLM since the early 2000's at least. I remember because my spouse's cousin and his wife were trying to get us to sign up with them and they had us come over to do a workout with them. I was the only one who could keep up with the workout but I couldn't do the jumping jacks due to female issues after having given birth, I had just had my youngest daughter a year or so before in late 2001. That's the only reason why I remember when it was. Lol. Also a funny memory not MLM related, when you mentioned paying to work for somebody else, my oldest daughter was trying shoes on at Sears, she was about 4 or 5 yo at the time. She watched with big eyes as the sales lady would go to the back and bring out different pairs of shoes for her to try on. At one point she asked the lady "How much does it cost to work here?" We all laughed and explained to her that that was not how it worked, lol. She thought the job was so awesome. Too cute. Sad that people do pay to be in an MLM. I know from first hand experience too well! Thanks for all you do, Hannah!

My mom was shamed for not breastfeeding me, but I was born jaundiced and the doctor made it very clear that she couldn’t breastfeed me due to this. Formula-shaming a mom is just the worst, because there are more than a few medical reasons that a mother can’t give her baby her own milk.

So one time I ordered a custom shampoo and conditioner set from Function Of Beauty. Idk if it’s still this way or if they changed it, but at the time of my purchase they had NOTHING to input allergies into, and they didn’t have ingredients lists on their site because something like “there are too many variables in what ingredients you could get so we are unable to provide an ingredients list until you get the product” which was really sketchy to me as I have a REALLY uncommon allergy to aloe, but I went ahead with it anyway because I have a mop of curly hair that I wanted to properly care for. The products arrived to me, and sure enough had aloe. I sent an email to the company citing the problem and the company didn’t even send me something to send the products back to them in and just issued me a full refund. Function Of Beauty isn’t an mlm and has its own problems as a company, but holy hell at least they didn’t demand a doctor’s note from me!!! I could NOT imagine being the person that has to tell someone they need a DOCTORS NOTE just to do something as mundane as get a refund on skin care products THAT GAVE YOU A REACTION. All because the product is supposedly “hypoallergenic” (Also side note: if your product has aloe in it it is not hypoallergenic 🥲)

My stepson has Down Syndrome and that story literally makes me sick. There aren't "symptoms" of Down Syndrome. It's not a disease, it's a disability. Two different things. And I'm shocked that a Mom with a daughter old enough to sell Mary Kay has not learned before now how to help her daughter gain her independence. And just the way she talks about her daughter. Poor daughter!

This was a comment I put on another video that said the same thing about when Beachbody started their MLM structure, and it was in fact 2007. The company has been around since 1998, and their MLM structure began in 2007 when they “saw how people were getting involved on message boards and saw the opportunity they could create for others to earn an income using their products”. Too many years in BB and I heard that speech a million times.

I have had five babies and I remember having a breakdown when cracked bleeding nipples caused me to have to buy formula for my firstborn because it was so painful to try to nurse. And the absolute frustration when I saw my fellow moms showing off freezers full of pumped milk when I could barely get last two ounces on a pump and my baby didn’t want a bottle once they started day care. It can make you feel like an absolute failure. So people who makes pitches like that make me want to shake them.

This one made me particularly disgusted! I volunteer with adults who have disabilities, and the thought that someone could take advantage of people in this way is infuriating. We have a beautiful, positive and inclusive environment and the statement 'like a normal person" is so sad and deeply problematic. What a terrible thing to say about anybody! We are all unique and we all have our own individual strengths and abilities. The story about the Arbonne rep purporting to have endless milk supply is also shocking - the way these damn companies prey on vulnerable people is absolutely despicable! Shame on them.

30:05 So stainless steel/titanium earrings are supposed to be hypoallergenic, but when I got some they irritated the f outta my ears. Things that are hypoallergenic can absolutely cause an allergic reaction regardless, and Mary Kay charging for proof that it was the cause of a reaction is ridiculous.

I was confused about beach body at first too until you clarified it wasn’t always MLM. I used to watch their free workout videos back in the day on Comcast on demand back when it was cutting edge lol. I’d also seen some infomercials late at night with their products. But around 2014ish is when I started seeing all these shakeology people everywhere. They’d even walk up to you in Walmart the way the electricity scammers do nowadays.

A good thing to remember when looking at an Income Disclosure Statement: If they only show minimum and maximum income of a rank, along with average (not mean), compare the average to the minimum and maximum number. If it is closer to one or the other, it means that there are more people in that rank making that amount rather than the other. If a rank has a minimum of $500 and maximum of $25,000 - with average at $1,000 - you know the bulk of the people make much closer to the minimum than maximum.
