thanks for sharing. My best friend has sent friend requests to my FB friends to expand her "network". I found out about it because my friends noticed I was the only person they had in common with her. I told them she had recently joined an MLM. I should have been up front and told her I didn't appreciate it, but I'm not assertive. It's a weight loss MLM and I don't think she will DM anyone - just wants to increase how many people see her before and after posts. She knew before she ever started that I wouldn't approve. Has she lost a bunch of weight? Yes. Should she be marketing herself as a coach? No.
@peridot_craponite_earrings2 жыл бұрын
That hit home SO MUCH. It's so hard keeping old friends from school and making new friends as an adult for so many reasons but MLMs are at the top of the list for me. It's basically the friendship equivalent of catfishing on dating apps. It got to the point where MLM product posts were all I was seeing on my social media and cold messages were the only messages I was getting. The only way I was able to make the bombardment stop was by leaving social media completely about 5 years ago. The peace and quiet is nice, but now the downside of that is if I want to catch up with old friends I have to reach out to them directly, and of course a lot of the time they don't answer because everyone just assumes when anyone randomly asks your how you're doing it's leading up to some scam.

That one hit me so hard. I had a really hard time finding friends in college after I transitioned out of the dorms and the same thing happened to me, not with an MLM but with a guy who wanted to ask me out. I’m crying to my roommate because I cant seem to make any friends who aren’t just trying to sleep with me. I try to console myself by reminding myself I do have this one friend that has really made an effort and seems to really genuinely want to be my friend…. And he texts me asking me out right then. There are already so many “friendship” landmines for college age women. Sickening that now “is it just an mlm pitch” is added to the list.

I was in Mary Kay. When you call before the party (I would text), it’s called pre-profiling. You’d ask them a bunch of questions about their skin and makeup interests. The idea was that it would help the party hold. I’m so happy I’m not in Mary Kay anymore. Lost 9 years of weekends to that scam

@gaylenewill64652 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's why they call. I, too, am glad I left MK. My reasons for leaving was: * Never made enough to cover my utility bills * I wanted to tell women they were beautiful and if the skin care was all I sold, that would've been ok. But... * At the weekly team hip-hip-hooray-fests I began seeing how my uplines were SO CAKED in makeup, the layers were caked and wrinkling (or cracking) on their faces. These ladies would've been so much prettier if they used the cleansers and moisturizers and walked with confidence (which they exuded). I felt like I was spreading the message that women were NOT beautiful and had to paint a different persona on their faces. So I left, letting $100's of products get stale in my storage room so I could officially throw them out. I went back into the oilfield and made real, honest money.

I want to share an observation that may explain why so many teachers get sucked into MLMs. In the teaching profession, it is a very common and normalized practice to spend your own money to do your job -often a great deal of money. Teachers almost always spend their own time on evenings, weekends, and holidays (uncompensated) on a variety of things that benefit their students and school. It isn’t a requirement of employment but unfortunately it is necessary and often expected. Teachers do get paid a salary and these common practices do not in any way compare to the cultish toxicity of an MLM, but you can see how teachers can be more easily swayed into MLMs as the profession has already normalized spending your own money and uncompensated time on your career.

Man that last story about curing MS made me think of a patients wife. Her husband had advancing Parkinsons and was transitioning to end of life. She matter of fact told.me her mlm had the cure for it but the medications I was giving him (pain meds mostly) rendered it inert so that's why it wasn't working. My patient at that point who had been mostly unresponsive did pipe up and told her it wasn't the time for her snake oil 😂😂😂

I don't think people realize how often this happens in general. Especially OUTSIDE of MLMs when it's just hippie types and overly religious types. My mom was sick most of my life and both groups were involved in my life. For religious folks (yes, all of them in my experience), it was that I hadn't given enough to god and I wasn't praying enough and neither were my parents. Good way to turn a teen doing overseas mission work into an atheist. Because that's all they accomplished. With the hippie types, it's because my mom was vaccinated, because she went to doctors, because she took her life sustaining medications. THAT was what was killing her. I did remain in this group for a very long time. Until I had my son. My son is on the spectrum and I've heard it all. I "poisoned" him with formula, regular baby food, and my previous vaccines as well as the ones my son received. I've heard so many times that it was my "fault" that my son was autistic. This did take a long time to remove myself from because on top of what they were saying, breast feeding activists have become complete bullies (and based on such little research). They go into parenting groups and tell mothers what terrible people they are if they don't breastfeed. Then there's the Le Leche League that has been given a national partnership with WIC. Because of this, WIC employees are now instructed to discourage any use of formula. They do this in a very dangerous manner as I was told multiple times by multiple WIC employees to stop taking medication prescribed for post partum depression so that I could go back to breastfeeding. And the Le Leche League is the only reason they are allowed to get away that. That's a lot to read so if anyone did, I think it's relevant that this behavior exists in an alarming number of people just in general. When you add the MLM to this fairly common behavior, it isn't surprising at all that as soon I broke free from the hippies and breastfeeding bullies, I was targeted by DoTerra and YoungLiving reps about how my son wasn't autistic from me, I just didn't know about oils yet. This same tactic has been used in attempt to sell me supplements from several MLMs. I guess they think telling me I can "cure" my sons autism is a good selling point. But it just makes me tell me them off.

Thanks Hannah! I appreciate your perspective on "I don't make these to convince people to leave MLMs". I knew she was part of Monet and pretty high up but always had refused her recruiting tactic. I stayed connected to her because of the stuff we had in common. It wasn't an incredibly "long game", but I got special treatment from a Mary Kay rep once. I'm not sure how knowledgable I was about MLM at the time, but I was silly enough to think she wanted to treat me to some gifts. I was invited to the montly pink meeting (or pearl party or whatever they called their group) of her downline. They were pretty much trained to offer "hard working" ladies in the public with facials to draw them in. Of course, the facial is just the demo of their skincare (which I did like back when I used it to support a friend) and the women they target are not in a position to afford buying into the business. In a totally different circumstance I watched a lady target her server at a local restaurant. She put off this really sweet persona and it made me so angry that she was trying to take advantage of the lady.

As i understand it, Partylite has shifted recently (2019 i think?) away from a party model to affiliate style e-sales. I was so excited to make a new friend as it’s harder to make friends when you’re past college age. She made her “business” pitch on our second hangout, and I’m super bummed out about it. I would have preferred her to just be honest and upfront from the minute she met me at the festival.

This is the first time I've heard kyani mentioned on youtube. One of their reps targeted me when I moved to America from Japan. I was desperate to find a job, but luckily my boyfriend (husband now), who is navy and familiar with MLMs because they target the military community a lot, told me how terrible they are. He was at the "party" with me and tried to hold back laughter the entire time; I was mesmerized by all the expensive cars and houses they kept showing and the money they talked about. As I said, I was struggling at the time. They wouldn't let us leave and even offered us alcohol, I assume to get our guard down and get us to sign up. Looking back, they barely talked about the product. They knew I didn't have a car, so the guy doing the presentation talked about how I could get any white luxury car I wanted. So now, whenever my husband and I see a white BMW or Mercedes, we look at each other and say, "look, a kyani car."

Your remark about how someone can be a scientist and still fall for this.... I had a friend in college who "won" a Mary Kay party and she decided to go through with putting it on and I went to it. I know I already mentioned that in a comment on another video but I should also point out that I knew this friend because we were both Physics majors together! I didn't give it a second thought after I left the party because I couldn't afford the products anyway but I found out a few days later that my friend actually joined Mary Kay after that. The next two years were full of unwanted facebook messages, group messages, group texts, and so on from her. I have not spoken to her in 8 years as a result. The thing that makes this even sadder is that I have moved around the East Coast several times since then, and just a few months ago my latest move brought me to a town only about 30 minutes away from where she currently lives, which is a huge coincidence considering neither of us are from here originally and it is not even the state where we both went to school. I don't think she knows I live here yet. Sometimes I think about reaching out but I'm too afraid of the MLM nonsense starting again.

I agree it’s worst when someone tries to befriend but they actually have an ulterior motive. It’s not MLM related but I did have that happen to me in grad school where a girl from my cohort wanted to get lunch. I accept because I thought she was wanting to reach out to make a friend. However, the reason why she asked me to lunch was there too was a meeting that was going to be happening because of an incident that happened and wondered I wanted to go. I was disappointed and hurt to be honest since she had a different motive. Maybe if she thought she was honest at the beginning, I would say no. But I would’ve preferred that instead of getting let on since I was lonely. But it’s true, you have to be careful now days.

Ugh I hate the health MLM and Pyramid Schemes! I have a lot of things wrong with me and I am always hearing from them that "if you take this... blah blah blah" and yeah it's totally like the well since you dont' take it then you are rejecting your cure. But a lot of times the stuff they are selling is so costly! Some of us already spend a ton of money and I mean a TON of money on doctor visits, tests, meds, and like other things such as vitamins, over the counter meds, heating pads, bandaids, cbd, gummies, liquid iv... and so much more! Like some of us are literally trying everything. I did oils and I'm sorry when they say a combination of oils and this oil has to go here at this time of day and this oil combined with this oil here - wait what? It's gotta be written down for us. Then you see the bill and mouth jaw drop. I just can't. I also had a friend that wanted me to join beach body and she said she was doing it - she said she was losing weight - I looked at her and she clearly wasn't losing weight and then she told me it tasted like a Wendy's frosty. I tasted it - It doesn't! Then she was like "you'll get used to it". What? Another thing... Every single person out here - our bodies are different. We react to things differently, we have allergies, we have health conditions, young old, never once wore makeup vs doing everything in the book. It just baffles me when these health nuts want to act like "it's for everyone" .

Even i joined amway through a entrepreneurial business group that i will not name. Now thinking back Im feeling so embarrassed. The fact that i even send a book link to my classmates so they can buy products from my online store. (amway) 🤣🤦♀️. Long ass story but thinkkng about it, so embarrassing. Never again.

Speaking of Origami Owl, the elementary school I went to as a kid would pass out their pamphlets during Christmastime for us to order from. Luckily I thought they were expensive and nonsensical as a kid so I didn't order. Instead I did a research project years later on how susceptible children are to their recruitment tactics due to them and Rock Your Hair having children's entrepreneurship programs. Quite shocking what I found, if you want to know more let me know

Omg this!! I've got tricked by close to 10 freaking women from Bumble BFF to tricking me trying to be really caring friends and it always ended up "My mentor from my side business/passive income is currently in town. Would you like to learn to grow your passive income in a supportive community? If that is something that you'd value?". Always in the same fucking template. I'm in Melbourne, Australia. And discovered later that some of them are from Amway.

What a freakin phenomenal quote...."Christian girl, what does it profit you to gain the world but lose your soul". Now you don't have to put the Christian girl part but im a spiritual person, not religious though. Religion is man made. Thats my opinion and im not going to debate anyone on that.
@HannahAlonzo3 жыл бұрын
I’m not religious either but I did love that quote!
@rebekahf15483 жыл бұрын
It was my submission 🥰 it is actually based on the Bible verse Mark 8:36 “for what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?”, which is why I directed it specifically to the “Christian girl.” Ugh I probably should have credited the source so people didn’t think I came up with it myself, but hopefully some might read this comment! It is very commonly quoted in Christian communities, which is why I used it to emphasize this very *un*christian behavior.
@JanetMiller783 жыл бұрын
@@rebekahf1548 yeah after i heard it and posted that, i went and Googled to see who said it and they said Mark 8:36. I read the bible but I can never remember scriptures. Its all good. I wouldn't sweat it. The anti-mlm community is a lot super smart sleuths. And im sure some if not most who were like woah that quote was excellent went digging. ❤❤❤

@@Catglittercrafts aw wow that was so nice of you to say!! I actually wanted to be an author growing up, but ended up going in a COMPLETELY different direction. I’m now a 4th year medical student, which means I’ll be a doctor in about 5 months. I still get to write a bit (if you count completing notes every day) so I guess I didn’t give it up completely!

ill a have to message u my story about my uncle and aunt later. i badly burned my hand and its hard to type one handed and its going to be a few weeks before ill b able to type. also, a lot of this stuff really reminds me of when i was a realtor with keller williams. they r pretty much an mlm for real estate. the training and culture and teams setup is so similar. and the conventions and training is exactly like everything u talk about for the mlm's. its toxic and creepy and loaded with toxic positivity and shaming and fake and encourages u to harass everyone you know and manipulate people.

(Late to this video, but had to comment) Cutco reps encouraged to hang out at malls and approach strangers. I'm sorry, but if i am out in public and someone approaches me with knives, my first thought is NOT going to be, "MLM pitch." It is gonna be, "I'm gonna get attacked and stabbed with a knife."

I know you have no control of this, but it’s funny KZbin decided to run an ad on how to grow your MLM business before your video.
@HannahAlonzo3 жыл бұрын
Yes! That’s a good thing 😊 I don’t get to choose the ads, that’s just the KZbin algorithm trying to match ads to the content of the video. But we like when MLM ads run because that means the MLM companies are wasting their ad dollars showing it to audiences who are the least likely to be influenced ❤️
