As an Anti-MLM Christian, I’m starting to get more and more furious when I hear women in MLMs “praising God” for this “amazing opportunity.” Just because you chose to join an MLM does not mean God told you to do it. You can make mistakes on your own behalf. I have definitely made decisions I regret, but I don’t “ignore the haters” by claiming that God wanted me to be here so others’ opinions and concerns don’t matter. Your religion is not there to justify your “perfect” way to live life and to discredit others. Im done now. That might have been a little heated. 😡

That whole bit about "your social media becomes a fan page for your MLM" is so true. I had someone on FB where about 85-90% of her posts were either pitches to try & sell products for Dotērra & ITWorks. Or she was trying to recruit for those Like every 2nd day it was "I'm swamped with work. Have 3 openings. Message me for info". Or "Get paid to post on your social media" etc etc. Making it sound like she had job opportunities. When all it was, was her MLM garbage What made it even more ridiculous was seeing all her fellow hun bots (who were clearly her uplines & downlines) flocking to those posts raving about the products & the "business opportunity". It was so blatantly obvious that they were her uplines/downlines 🤦♀️

Plus Savy writes books, a creator that has ocd, has spoken a few times about how it's especially harmful for those with ocd and presumably other disorders that cause intrusive thoughts. Like yeah if you already have a voice telling you that if you don't continually flip the lights on and off something terrible will happen and now you're "manifesting" it by fixating on this compulsion that's completely out of your control. Just an angel I'd never considered until she spoke about how it affected her.

As a mental health therapist we no longer talk about this idea bc many of us find it to be used by toxic ppl to manipulate those in their lives. We lean more into positive psychology these days & it’s more effective & makes more sense.
@fionavanyel2 жыл бұрын
Bless you, Hannah, for saying exactly what I was thinking during the WFAB rep's "law of attraction" speech. Law of attraction is one of those things rooted in truth that takes it waaaay too far. Yes, if you fixate on the bad in your life and can't see past it, you're less likely to see and act on the good - but if you ignore all the bad and suppress it and never talk about it, you're bottling up emotions that need to be expressed for your own mental health. And conversely, having a positive outlook in general can be helpful for attracting positive people and opening doors for you - but it does not guarantee success and good things happening. While I do agree that maintaining a pleasant attitude in your life can open doors and attract people to you, whereas maintaining a negative and morose attitude can close doors and turn people away, there MUST be a balance, or else you run the risk of being taken advantage of. How many folks in abusive situations have kept on a cheerful smile, not complained, done their best to make lemonade out of rotten lemons - and just trapped themselves because no one knows they're suffering, their partner doesn't magically get better, and their positive attitude changes nothing of their situation? Anyway. Thank you for saying what I was thinking and pointing out the logic that the law of attraction twists to serve its own means.
@marra96542 жыл бұрын
I appreciate this comment so much. Keeping a positive attitude is like a second nature to me but it's become a double edged sword for sure.
@jakzine5402 жыл бұрын
Just as important, deliberately and utterly ignoring any possible negative consequences to a choice or situation is incredibly dangerous; having a positive outlook is useful and good for one's morale and mood, but willfully ignoring any possible bad outcomes is unimaginably dangerous for one's finances, success, and happiness. A positive thinking person can do much to inoculate oneself against unpleasant outcomes by realistically sizing up those outcomes and making plans against them! Just having plans in place for failure or unhappiness does much to mitigate their effects! That's something MLMs and other irresponsible, and often malicious, sorts deliberately try to refuse.

When I’ve had painful or depressing stuff circling in my mind and I finally let myself say it in no uncertain terms, I noticed I didn’t stay ruminating on it after that. And you may need to periodically express it to keep letting the pressure out of the well so it doesn’t build up again.

A decision she chose that she claimed she knew was the right decision because she was SCARED. So her next chapter of her life was said to be correct because of FEAR and yet she won’t “let FEAR” control her when she literally let it control her decision making?? Lol first part of entry is like “I’m shaking and scared and this is right because fear tells me it’s right!” Last part of entry be like “I won’t let fear control my next chapter that is based on fear!!!”

Honestly, I did put a lot of thought into the couple MLMs I joined briefly. I had some doubts, but felt pretty confident with the information I was given and found on my own, but never had much success with any of them. I didn't know much of anything about MLMs at the time, and didn't know that they are pyramid schemes. I'm so glad I know better now, and a big part of that came from you! Thanks, Hannah!

Regarding the second clip - I’m sorry but 180$ seems very little compensation to recruit 4 people. Recruiting people in general isn’t an easy task, let alone luring and deceiving people into a pyramid scheme! All that for a measly 180$? Am I the only “one that thinks damn that’s cheap compensation”?

Also consider it took a lady 2 weeks of pretending to be my friend to get me to join Mary Kay. That included 1 dinner & about 6 hours 1 on 1. My MK experience was a horrible story of its own. Another person threw a “party” trying to recruit me (& others). I really believe at least one person who “joined” that night was a ringer. That MLM made no sense at all. So if they received $180 for 4 people, $45 person. They are barely making minimum wage for the time they actually put in.

Re law-of-attraction and toxic positivity: My mother fell in with a cult when I was a kid that were early followers of law-of-attraction. This was in the 80s and in to the 90s. She used it as a way to abuse me emotionally, verbally, and medically. I never needed to go to a doctor because if I just stopped thinking I was sick, I would be well. Why would I need medications for a UTI or sinus infection or year round pollen and dust allergies when all I had to do was tell myself I wasn’t sick anymore and wasn’t allergic anymore. If I caught the flu or a stomach bug, mom would insist that I intentionally made myself sick by thinking about it so that I could skip school. If someone else in the family got sick, I got punished because it was obviously my negative thoughts that weakened the energy of the whole household and made the other person sick. It was even things like if the car broke down or the washing machine went out, I’d get the blame because two weeks ago I complained about having to wash the car or about doing laundry, and so I’d get punished. If I made a comment about how often mom’s car broke down, I’d get screamed at and told that now it’s going to break and it’ll be all my fault. If I looked at mom a certain way she would yell and punish me because she’d insist that she *knew* I was *thinking* negative thoughts and am going to bring negativity down on the whole house. I found myself stopping in mid-thought and being almost in tears saying “I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I didn’t mean it!” because I thought something slightly negative. I didn’t believe the law-of-attraction stuff, but even so my mom’s abuse had me trying actively to avoid all negative thoughts. I’m almost 40 and only just now breaking down the ways that being raised this way affected me negatively. The way it made me afraid to tell people “no” or be even remotely rude even if everything in me was screaming that I was in an unsafe situation and needed to leave. I have multiple chronic conditions (a couple of which first showed symptoms in my childhood, but I was expected to just stop thinking about it and fix myself) and I still feel weirdly guilty when I go to the doctor. A huge part of my medical history is a big question mark because I only went to doctors if it was something the school might get my mom in trouble for (like when I had a high fever and missed school for a week so they needed a doctors note before I could come back). My mother was obsessed with being rich, and when one of her MLMs or other get rich quick schemes would fail, she would blame me and my negative vibes. I just can’t help but wonder how many people are out there, now that this is more popular, telling themselves that when they get sick it’s their own fault. Ignoring chronic or serious symptoms because if they just manifest positivity, it’ll go away. How many are blaming their kids, parents, siblings, etc for their inability to make money in an MLM because “I know I’m being positive, so I should be raking it in. That means someone close to me must be attracting negativity and causing me to fail.” How many relationships are going to be ruined by this mindset from people going no contact with the perceived “negative force” in their life and how many kids abused like I was?

I'm so sorry this happened to you. The so-called law of attraction is dangerous nonsense that says people are responsible for every awful thing that happens to them, as well as giving credit to magic for things achieved through hard work or luck. Believing in the law of attraction isn't just having a different opinion; it's toxic nonsense.

Psychology student here (graduate level studies, but this information is even in entry-level courses) just wanting to comment on the 'law of attraction'. It drives me NUTS because it's loosely based on psychological theories that do have some research behind them, but it's just taken WAY too far. A great example is general depression, not clinical but situation-based depression. If you start believing that your life is awful, that the world is terrible, and nothing will ever get better, then yes, you probably won't be very effective in your general life, and you will struggle to get out of your depression. But if you have people in your life reminding you of the good things, and the talents you have, the beautiful parts of life, then you'll have a much easier time getting through and staying motivated to keep trying to get better. Dwelling on things also has a slow but steady negative effect on your outlook, but again, that is if you constantly dwell on something and can't let it go - we're talking at an obsessive level. Generally talking about problems, venting about them to friends? You aren't attracting the wrath of the universe by doing that! You said it so well Hannah - the concept of self-fulfilling prophecies is so much more accurate and based on both experience and research than this stupid law of attraction.

One thing that’s always baffled me when mlm reps claim that „we’re just getting paid for what you’d do anyway!“, but like…who reps products like that? I might recommend something I really like but I don’t care whether it leads to a sale and I don’t know anyone who’s just constantly talking about products.

Thank you for standing up to the law of attraction crap. It really is up there with toxic positivity, and is often strongly used in victim-blaming rhetoric. Even if it isn't always the part they say out loud, it's heavily implied when someone goes through really dark times that they've attracted all of those bad things to themselves and it's their fault. It tends to be a trigger for me, because it's up there with these other horrible, horrible ideas: "What did you do for god to punish you? Everything happens for a reason. God is just testing you. This is all part of God's plan. What were you wearing?"

Insinuating that little girls are just as evil as them and their toxic “business” structure 🙄 Which is literally just a pyramid scheme with a gift shop in the lobby of the pyramid, and a sign that says “Look over here!”

“Free advertisement” is such an ironic statement. As someone who studied Bachelor in Advertising, we define it as “PAID, non-personal form of communication with the intention to sell products/services through the use of a media/medium.” What they are doing is not advertising, it’s personal selling and promotion.

The most worrying thing about teachers falling into mlm is the lack of critical thinking on their part, aren't those the people that SHOULD teach students critical thinking 🤔.

26:13 I am from Ontario, Canada and so sad to hear teachers in the US are underpaid and have side jobs...here they are paid very generous and have the best pension out of any, the strongest union, if you get into one of our school boards as a teacher you are on a sweet road to an absolutely beautiful retirement package also. I honestly am so heartbroken as I did read more into the difference between Canada and US pay, I know 3 teachers here and I also worked for a mortgage company and had numerous teachers applications with their income and I was shocked when I was processing teachers income statements from the government....this truly breaks my heart as its one of the most important jobs , sorry this is off topic of MLM

I was a girl scout for 12 years and traveled internationally with the Girl Scouts. No it’s not an mlm. When we fundraise money it’s for Girl Scouts to use for conferences, educational purposes or travel. It is also used for charitable organizations. There are levels but they are based off age and not how many cookies you sell. And you can earn badges for selling lots of cookies but you definitely don’t make any commission at all. The ignorance 😂
