The biggest problem with this Applejack episode is that it's not an Applejack episode. Think about it, if this episode were from Applejack's perspective, Spike's characterization would make much more sense because AJ wouldn't want his assistance. There, just make this an Applejack episode from her perspective, and the episode's great with only a few flaws.

You know how I'd like to see this story done? Person A saves Person B's life. Person A proceeds to use this to guilt trip Person B into doing stuff for them. ("I saved your life, and you can't even do this one little thing for me?" "*sigh* Fine.") Person B grows tired of this and tries to get Person A in danger so they can save them.

@@kaylafincher3610 Not if Person A starts with small tasks that aren't much trouble and then slowly starts asking for more favors or help before asking for a full day's worth of help on a day where Person B has an event that's important to them, which is where the, "You can't do this one little thing for me?" line would come in. Then, Person B would get Person A put in mild danger and save them, but something from the danger would make it obvious that Person B was the cause or had some affiliation with it. Person B would express their anger with being guilt tripped and Person A would express their anger with intentionally being put in danger but then realize that using their friend was messed up and cruel of them.

I agree that it'd make more sense if Spike became Rarity's servant instead of Applejack's. As you said, his crush on her would be a decent explanation for his out-of-character clumsiness. And it'd actually have a conflict for Rarity, having to choose between a lifetime servant, or a close friend. She knows having Spike as her servant is rather selfish, and thus, her generosity shines through, having her and the others find a way to free Spike from his lifetime of being Rarity's servant. They could've used a similar climax, with the planned Timberwolf attack, but execute it better. Having Spike accidentally burb up a flame that burns part of the creature down, causing it to flee back into the forest.

1.Spike is not that clumsy in the episode the reason Applejack does not like Spike helping her out is because she has no chores for him and even if she had she thinks it does not fell right and 2.Spike's fire is not that strong he is a baby dragon you keep forgeting that he is a baby and you expect too much from him and even if he wasn't a baby he called timberwolves ,,Dragon eating'' so maybe they are immune to fire since they eat dragons and even if this wasn't the case what you described would be too gruesome and would scar kids for life you keep forgeting that this show is for kids as well

The ending of this episode reminds me a lot of the ending of the Spongebob episode I Had an Accident, which was also co-written by Merriweather Williams. Can you imagine if they had followed that comparison to the end? Spike: You know what I don't get? Applejack: What? Spike: What's a timberwolf doing in Ponyville anyway? Timberwolf: Uh...you see...it's actually funny...there's a...Zecora, they're onto us! Zecora: Let's get out of here! And they ride off into the sunset while the audience wonders what the f*** just happened.

You dont have to make Spike a klutz/moron in order to make Applejack uncomfortable with a servant for life. She doesn't even stick with the episode's continuity, as Spike makes a giant dangerous rock tower and doesn't fuck that up... but somehow fucks up cleaning the kitchen. Here's an idea: make Applejack reject him flat-out, saying she has to be honest enough to tell him she doesn't need his service, and that she was happy to save him because they're friends. Then have Applejack turn around to find Spike has done all of her chores behind her back, leaving her nothing to do... Since she's satisfied with her life and running the farm makes her happy, she would realize she has no purpose if Spike does everything FOR her. She begins to panic at the fact that Spike probably won't stop helping her and asks her friends for help, and they come up with the idea of having him save her life to repay the debt. Also, omit the idea of Spike immediately turning on Twilight. He could've tried to talk to her and her not listen because she's busy reading, which could make Spike irritated enough to turn his back on her and commit to serving Applejack. That would've made this episode better while making Owl's Well That Ends Well better by default while also keeping The Crystal Empire pt2's continuity...

I think the point of the CGI was to give the wolves a sense of otherness, and to make it easier to tell the real wolves apart from the pantomime wolf at the end (which I thought was adorable btw). This episode does have some serious problems though - and yes, it would make much more sense if he were working for Rarity: his screwups would be justified because he'd be nervous, his obsessive devotion would make sense given his crush on her, and it would make sense for her to humor him by trying to keep him busy because she doesn't want to hurt his feelings. Like you said, putting the focus on AJ would be great too, because she'd have to choose between his integrity and her own, something that would be a difficult decision (and an appropriate conflict) for the element of truth. Either way, it's a story with a lot of potential that ended up just confused because it got its focus all wrong. As for the difficulty cleaning, it could be justifiable: Twilight's a neat freak, nothing is ever out of place. Tapping an inkwell out of line was enough to draw her undivided attention immediately. Yes Spike cleans for her, but let's be honest: for Twilight, there's not much cleaning to be done. For the Apples, a family who live on a farm, who don't mind getting their hooves dirty, it's a much more complicated job. Also... just like the rest of the episode, the ending... almost worked - and I do kind of like that the scenario they tried and failed pitifully to stage ended up actually happening because they so totally botched staging it.

I think this episode was the show's poor attempt to apologize for how poorly they have treated dragons it's them saying dragons may be unsocial assholes, but at least they have honor. Unfortunately, they can't be since they seemed to have a problem with dragons they coldn't be too nice to them so they just had to shit on Spike at least a little by making him inept. Also if Applejack really didn't want Spike to help her she should have just told him being her slave is against her code he would have had to respect that.

He is not that clumsy he did all the chores right the only time he screwed up was when baking and that's it.And as for the dishwasher well he broke it because he was distracted by his crush. And just because he can cook that does not mean that he can coock everything, and even if that was the case they never specify in what order are this episodes yeah they are episodes ,,123456789''etc but they never specify when the action is happening so maybe this episode is a prequel to those episodes

Come to think of it, this could have been an episode of best friend and family vs an overwhelming sensational crush that Spike has to figure out. He's good friends with Rarity and practically a... Whatever family branch he'd count as with Twilight, he might feel like heading out and having his own adventure. But as he goes on, he starts to feel homesick but at the same time drawn in by his image of Rarity, battling between them as he goes on. That little bit would have also allowed for many mistakes to happen with his internal conflict keeping his attention.

I would really love to see this redone with him serving Rarity. He wouldn't have had to be as incompetent as her servant, since Raritys so particular and likes everything just so. That means that the way he did a chore could look perfectly acceptable to the audience but still not be the way Rarity likes it.

I don't mind cliched plots if something new was added to them. For example let's use the "new girl bumps into the good looking guy and their school items fall on the floor then their hands begin touching " cliche. He's nice at first ,but then he starts spreading his real feelings about her all over the school and then he becomes an enemy towards the new girl . That would've been original if you ask me.

Hey! @0:55 You DO remember Spike is a KID, right!? He is a kid!! Even IF you have such a power in such a situation as to resolve it that quickly, at that age: YOUR FEAR TAKES AWAY LOGIC AND REASON!!! Seriously, every brony has a complaint about that and yet it's actually believable that, as a kid (being less than ten years of age), he can forget that he can breathe fire and it could WORK in this context!!

Funny thing about this episode, even though the story was credited by Dave Polsky, the final episode barely had anything he wrote. So Merriweather can be blamed for a lot of what went wrong. Also, apparently, Spike was originally supposed to serve Rarity in this episode. I guess, for whatever reason, things changed, resulting in this episode, which I'm tempted to say, is the worst episode of season 3. Aside from having a plot that's been literally done to death in every single kids cartoon ever made ever, there are lapses in logic (Spike not using his flame powers to get rid of the Timberwolves, Spike throwing a rock at a big timerwolf after we've already seen that it's completely ineffective), minor out of character moments (Spike is somehow really bad at being a servant, despite being one for Twilight for so long; not to mention he only seems to be bad at it when the story requires him to be; I blame Merriweather for this), and another dumb climax (I don't care if you think it's funny, a wolf made of WOULD who I DOUBT would need to breath if it can reassemble after falling to pieces, is fucking stupid! Hell, that pretty much sums up ALL of Dave Polsky's attempts at humor, really dumb and aggravating!). There's literally nothing of value that I can find in this episode, even less then Apple Family Reunion. The timberwolves are kind of cool, but they manage to ruin THAT in the very end.

1.They switched Rarity with Applejack because they tought that Rarity would look like a bitch 2.Original ideas don't come out of thin air nor do they fall from the sky nor do they grow in trees plus this plot was not always:A saves B and B wants to repay A for saving him/her but A does not want to. There were also versions in witch A saves B and A wants to use this to make B his/her servent and i saw the A wants to make B his/her servent is more commune plus here Spike is Applejack's servent because of his dragon code who only applies to him btw 3.You seem to forget that Spike is a baby so he is not that strong and even if he was he was too scared too make a move and as for the timberwolf well maybe his weakness is inside 4.Spike is not so bad at doing his job he only screwed up when baking the pie and when he tried to wash the dishes at Rarity's but this are perfectly excusable because 1 even tough Spike is a good chef he can't cook everything and 2 he ws distracted by his crus on rarity 5.Oh come on Looney tunes and other old cartoons did this sort of things and you never questioned theyr logic plus you claim that a creature made out of wood does not need to breath but you are completly fine with talking ponies?

I whould actually have liked it better if it was "That season" for Timber Wolves to attack something on AJ property and Spike comes to help becuse Fire "duh". We could still have him helping AJ. But then when the Wolves comes back and turns big, Spike tries to fire it but they use AJ´s water supplie thing I think I have seen and don´t burn that easy. And then Spike use the rock. It´s lack of conflict that hurts this episode the most.

Badre Bally actually, Joshscorcher had a better idea. That possibly Twilight helped Spike come up with this personal code after seeing how cruel the dragons were. I would believe this idea, if Twilight hadn't acted like Spike had this personal moral code since he was born. Especially given previous episodes like "Secret of my Excess" how he didn't beg Rainbow Dash to let him serve her after saving his and Rarity's life.

And to be fair,in regards to his cooking skills, cookies are alot different to make than a cake, and Spike may have just been SO hung go that he 'forgot' how to bake in a controlled, careful manner. Cooking is an art form more than a science, kinda like Sweetie Belle's bad singing in 'Sleepless in Ponyville', despite her earlier singing being MUCH better, her emotional state and tiredness meant she sung badly.

Maybe spike did not used fire because he called the timberwolves ,,Dragon eating'' so maybe they are praying on dragons and they developed an immunity to dragon fire

i think spike can be defended in not using fire, he's scared, a scared child, how often does a scared child react logically to what they are scared of?

I find the plot not AS cliche as most cartoons, most of the time it's one character extorting services from the other through guilt and emotional blackmail, rather than it being a willing and proactive choice on the part of the one doing the services.

Breathe fire! Breather FIRE!!! Yeah. Brilliant idea. Now instead of being chased by Timber Wolves, now he's being chased by Timber Wolves on FIRE!!! Until they're reduced to ash, Timber Wolves on fire are even MORE dangerous than regular Timber Wolves..

@2:07 You COULD make the argument that, after messing up so many times before, he's kinda anxious and overzealous at this point? That could lead to making mistakes in something your actually GOOD in. Thinking back, I've had that happen to me a time or two.

B-But it's not the "Dragon Code of Honor" it's the "Spike the Dragon Code of Honor". It seems more that he made himself a Code of Honor so that he could be different from the "Bad" Dragons. However, I like a strong Spike episode, and this one made me cringe several times over.

My response to what you said at 3:29 - 3:33, uh, yeeeeeeeeeeeah, you might want to watch certain Season 8 - 16 episodes of Thomas the Tank Engine... The lead characters are always out of character...

Two things, one the reason he didn't exhale fire (little pet peve of mine they don't breathe fire they breathe oxygen and exhale fire. We breath oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Breathe means to take in not put out.) is because he IS STILL A BABY and was really scared probably paralyzed with fear. He threw the rock at the end because he overcame the fear to save Apple Jack. Second you say you thought Twilight didn't know a lot about dragons. Spike's personal code has nothing to do with any other dragon, just him. So she could know nothing what so ever about dragons and know that. He didn't create the code because all dragons have to he did it for himself. Actually one last thing. The reasons he messed up his chores. He could be overly nervous about helping Apple Jack because she just saved his life which brings me to point two. He could have been traumatized by the incidence and that's why he acted strange but after beating his fear he got over it. Also the door said he wouldn't just not be her assistant it said she didn't want him anymore and he would never she her again. All that happened here is that he wouldn't be her assistant anymore which still did make him cry.

sorry but you are just assuming things in your head to justify a episode of terrible writing. Everything you've said is not explored in the episode so you cannot try to make it sound like it is a fact.

You know what? This plot, because of it's numerous variations, is as painfully obvious as how it got executed in this episode! Plus, "TNAOWIP" did this specific plot most likewise to MLP. Basically, just swap Spike for Tigger, and Applejack for Piglet, and you get an MLP ripoff of my favorite Disney cartoon of all time, like what TTG did to Scooby Doo in "The Cruel Giggling Ghoul"!!!

This episode is such a disapointment. The main thing that ruins it for me is that they used so many cleches in this episode when in every other episode when there was a perfect set up for a cleche they found a way around it.
