@Tokuman10010 жыл бұрын
W4t3rf1r3 Still, even some of the weaker episodes of MLP: FIM are better than any of the modern SpongeBob episodes. My reason for this being that the writers for MLP actually take their audience seriously, while all the new writers for SpongeBob do is pander to the lowest common denominator.
@W4t3rf1r310 жыл бұрын
Gregory Cassella Here, here. That is the sad truth.
@Tokuman10010 жыл бұрын
+W4t3rf1r3 Another thing that "Owl's Well That Ends Well" did better than "A Pal for Gary" is that when Twilight saw Spike in life-threatening danger of the giant dragon, she actually came to his rescue instead of acting oblivious to the whole ordeal and going "Spike! You put that dragon down right now! Bad boy, Spike! Bad! Bad! Bad, Spike! Bad!" like SpongeBob did with Puffy Fluffy. Last but not least, Spike did get a somewhat happier ending than Gary did. So yeah, with all that said, I would take "Owl's Well That Ends Well" over "A Pal for Gary" any day.

Ah, the first episode (of many) where Spike is treated like utter trash by the entire cast. Poor guy probably has a complex by now. At least in the comics he's tight with Celestia. OWtEW is my least favourite episode of S1, for exactly the reasons MrEnter mentioned. All of the unfortunate implications of Twilight & Spike's relationship began here.
@JCBro-yg8vd10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's kind of sad. Even to this day Spike is still frequently abused or neglected by Twilight whenever the plots dictates it. Maybe if they didn't do so often, it might actually be funny.

***** Dude, it's cool how you brought up the "Defending Owl's Well That Ends Well" blog from FIMFiction.net because I just happened to be BronyRanger himself. I swear to God I'm telling the truth. However, I do feel that I neglected two other minor complaints some people have with the episode: * Why didn't Twilight just use her telekinesis to grab the scroll that blew away? My best guess is that Unicorn magic can't lock on to things that are either moving too fast or too far out of range. ** On top on that, SuperPinkBrony12 pointed out in his review blog of the episode that the reason why Twilight thought Spike would be better at retrieving the scroll that her was because she was panicking and not thinking straight. * Why didn't Twilight use her light magic to illuminate the path for her and Spike when running from the giant dragon? She was probably afraid of luring it into their direction.

I have an idea on how you could fix this episode. At the beginning, when Spike falls asleep, Twilight doesn't find if cute like everyone else. Instead she frowns and expresses concern for him. She explains to the others that Spike has been working himself to the bone trying to help her lately and refuses to admit when he needs to rest. She's pleased that he's sleeping now, but is worried that he's not getting enough of it and wants to make things easier for him somehow. Later, after the owl retrieves Twilight's scroll, she brings him on specifically as a nocturnal assistant, hoping Spike will now be able to get some proper rest. She tells this to Spike the next morning after he finds the owl sleeping on a perch, but he's upset that she didn't ask his opinion before hiring a new assistant. He gets defensive about his duties and says he doesn't need help with the nighttime jobs. Twilight assures him that he's a good friend and helper and that it's because she cares for him that she hired an extra assistant in the first place. Unfortunately this doesn't ease Spike's concerns and, as we see the owl being much more effective and efficient compared to an overtired Spike, he grows concerned that the owl will soon replace him completely. This Leeds to his jealousy and paranoia made worse from exhaustion. I'm not sure how best to resolve the conflict, as I've made Spike to be incredibly stubborn and unlikely to listen to reason, but at the very least this should be a better set up for the episode. It shows Twilight's motivation more clearly and confirms that she's doing it with good intentions. And having Spike be visibly tired for a lot of the episode would not only reaffirm Twilight's concerns, but could also be an explanation for Spike's behaviour.

I hate this episode. As the first Spike centered episode, it was not a good start. Owlicious (sorry if I spelled that wrong) is barely a character, the episode, the jealousy plot was predictable, and that moment the Mane Six starts loving Owliwicious infuriated me. Twilight was so stupid in the episode. The only redeeming quality of the episode is that Spike wasn't annoying and I still felt he was in character. Other than that, this sucked. Hope Spike episodes get better. 1 Out of 5 Stars Bronze
@JennyBlaze25310 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I gotta defend this episode a bit. While the Mane 6 were acting a bit oblivious... they honestly are oblivious a lot of the time. Spike may have been acting out of character, but he felt threatened. Also, there are some owls (correct me if I'm wrong) that are just as active in the day as they are at night, like Barn Owls. Is this episode flawed? Yes. Do I consider it a bad episode? Not to the degree of "Somepony to Watch Over Me", my least favorite episode in the whole series.

I got weird vibes from this episode. Like it's a pet being replaced by another pet. But spike _isn't_ a pet, he's sentient. Twilight, cause her logic for owlicious is bullshit, she’s unbelievably oblivious to spike’s feelings and frustrations, and completely stops giving spike attention as soon as the owl was introduced (which is probably the head for why this mess pushed spike into being maliciously angry with owlicious). Owlicious technically did nothing directly to spike and spike’s behavior was kindled by twilight’s lack of awareness of spike’s feelings, and giving spike a fair reason to believe he’s being replaced.

+Jones Fan If you ask me, Twilight was nowhere near as bad as SpongeBob was in the episode "A Pal for Gary". I mean, at least Twilight rescued Spike when she saw he was in danger of a giant monster, realized the mistake she made of not being sensitive to Spike's feelings, and most importantly apologized to him for it. SpongeBob on the other hand constantly blamed Gary for everything Puffy Fluffy did, even when he clearly saw the latter about to eat the former, and never once apologized to the poor snail for mistreating him.
@MrMarinus189 жыл бұрын
+Jones Fan I actually kinda liked it. Mostly because Twilight realized that Spike was gone and apologized for being insensitive. That's something many shows (even this one) often forget.
@MrMarinus189 жыл бұрын
+Gregory Cassella It's more than that. Spongebob blamed Gary for things he didn't do while Twilight was only blaming Spike for things he did actually do and those things actually were wrong. She was a little one sided maybe and also should have looked into it deeper but she learned that at the end. I honestly don't understand the anger against this episode. Spike didn't seem OOC to me, he can be sensitive at times and also possessive of things that are important to him. Also his position as assistent is what he identifies himself by and when that is threatened he feels like he could lose his very identity.

I actually don't think this episode is that bad. Yeah, it's bad, and I don't like it, but I don't think it's the worst thing ever like so many others say it is. I also don't have Owloyscious or however you spell his name. On the contrary, I really like him. I DON'T like how much of an asshole Spike is. Some of it may be justified, but dressing up like fucking Snidley Whiplash, as if to show you he's definitely in the wrong, even though he THINKS he's in the right, is fucking stupid! I also hate how Twilight completely dismissed Spike's feelings of needing to be helpful. That's why I like the ending so much, and thus, don't think it's that bad. The "who?" joke is also not funny. It started out as an incredible poor man's "Who's on first?" joke, and the fact that it continues throughout the episode REALLY gets on my nerves. But yeah, don't think it's THAT bad, but still don't like it.

Rubberman202 While this is neither my least favorite Spike episode (Dragon Quest and Spike at Your Service) nor is it my least favorite Cindy Morrow episode (The Show Stoppers and One Bad Apple), I do agree that its story is probably one of the most flawed of the entire series. One thing I felt this episode did right, which keeps me from hating it, was showing the dynamic of Twilight and Spike's relationship and seeing it develop. So yeah, OWTEW is flawed, but it has a nice payoff. And hey, it's still nowhere near as God awful as the SpongeBob episode "A Pal for Gary".
