I think Jon Jones deserves an honourable mention here. What a thought...
@panner11 Жыл бұрын
We'll never know. But we have to remember getting bouts actively does wear on the body. Unless you're a robot, damage accumulates over time. And being active makes keeps the zero losses for long almost impossible. I think if Jones or GSP didn't get that time off, they would've had an end of career like Silva before long. The time off due to all that other stuff may have extended his career. Other champions who won it at a young age, usually don't look the same in their 30s compared to their 20s. Whereas most fighters peak in the early 30s.
@randallflagg3700 Жыл бұрын
The Matt Hamill DQ honestly never got in JJ's way. Back then, everyone knew that Jones had won before he even threw the first illegal elbow... and just 3 months after that "loss", he was given his first UFC main event, a nice high profile fight against Brandon Vera, who was just coming off a very controversial decision loss to Randy Couture (Randy was way more popular than Vera, so fans were just relieved that he got the win and never spoke of the fight again) Anyway, JJ's dq really didn't affect that career negatively, since he was nobody back then, and the public opinion was in his favor and it was Herb Dean who was called out for the fight ending this way (asking a deaf Matt Hamill with both eyes closed if he wanted to continue, no immediate response, waved it off)

I'm actually re-watching the season of TUF he was on and we all know the outcome of it. While on there he spoke of being bullied as a child and the self-esteem issues he has. Chael Sonnen truly tried to get him out of his own head. And that is what I think has plagued him in his career. Hall is a gifted mixed martial artist and we were blessed to see him in action. But, you are right, there's no telling how much more was in him.

Reyes won the fight with Jones. The judges just seen Jones come on strong in the last minute or 2. Smart on Jones part it worked.

I always wondered what if TJ Grant never got a concussion. Would he have beaten Benson Henderson? Maybe, maybe not but after Grant destroyed Gray Maynard I think he had a chance.
@Rando1975 Жыл бұрын
That's my biggest what if, mostly because TJ is from my home province. We may have had a UFC World Champion from Nova Scotia.
@robertnorman2815 Жыл бұрын
@@Rando1975 He very well could've. Benson lost the belt to Pettis on the day TJ was supposed to fight for the Title. You could say Pettis just had Benson's number or that it was an off night but I'd like to think Grant would've gotten the belt that night if he had the chance to try.

Biggest what if is what if Fedor signed with UFC? How would he have faired with the UFC talent? Would he have become champion and how long would he have held it for? Would all of these lead to him being the GOAT if these all happened?

Khabib has got to be up there too, probably in the top 3 at least. As great of a career he's had, he was injured for 2 years after beating RDA (who later became the LW champ), suspension after the Dillon Danis scuffle, COVID, then retiring after the tragic death of his father. Khabib retired well and truly in his prime. Imagine him winning the belt 2 years earlier, defending it maybe 3-4 more times, going up to WW to make way for Islam and winning the WW title then goes to defend maybe 3 times before retiring. If Khabib had 8 more title fights, retired on top and undefeated, no USADA pops, he would be the undisputed GOAT.

Fathers plan was 30-0 so he would have had one more fight regardless.

Zabit will always be the biggest what if to me, dude was a phenom and the top guys didn’t wanna fight him. Shame that once he allegedly fixed his cardio issue he decided to call it a career.

Here's another what if. Ricardo Arona. He was a very skilled grappler and won 3 ADCC world championships and won 2 BJJ world championships at the intermediate level. He even beat a few MMA champs in grappling matches, like Tito Ortiz and Mark Kerr. But he had quite a few bad matchups in MMA that wrecked his chances of becoming an MMA legend. His 3rd pro fight was against Fedor, he almost beat Rampage until Rampage picked him up and slammed him to death, he was a finalist in the Pride middleweight grand prix, beating Sakuraba and Wanderlei but lost to Shogun by 1st round ko and had a rematch vs Wanderlei for the middlweight belt but lost by split decision.

I feel bad for Reyes man I still believe he did enough to win against jones! And he took this robbery in humble way, and now he's in 4 fight losing streak! Sad sh*t 😪

Pretty much everyone who isn't a fanboy of Jon Jones thinks Reyes beat him, myself included. That was the biggest title fight robbery in recent memory.

This is a controversial one, however, what if Conor never lost to Nate Diaz? Would he be as adamant on defending the FW and LW titles like he said he would? To add, what if he never boxed Floyd? Would the drive that he had when he was a FW contender still carry him through, thereby reaching greater heights in his fighting career?

Great list. Honorable mention to Aleksander Emelianenko. Fedor once said Aleks was more way talented but didn't have discipline. Something that became obvious later. Great sambo, some of the fastest and deadliest hands of any HW ever.

Honorable mentions: Nick Diaz if he kept training and didnt get banned. Zabit if he didnt retire. Conor McGregor if he stayed active and motivated at 145/155. Frank Mir if he didnt get injured. Dominick Cruz if he didnt constantly get injured. Daniel Cormier if he didnt switch to LHW. DJ mighty mouse if he got that decision on Cejudo (many think he won) and stayed in the ufc. Khabib if he didnt retire? Cejudo if he stayed active (but we will see what he can do).

Alot more 'what ifs' were missed on Cerrone. In particular, I think it is worth noting that; -- He spent alot of time during his physical prime participating in extreme sports and other endeavours outside of MMA. - He destroyed his back and many other body parts from accidents suffered during afforementioned extreme sports -- He spent a large portion of his career as his own coach/camp due to mistreatment from Jackson Wink Guy had some of the best offensive strking and combos in the game and high level jiu jitsu. In a parralell universe, Cerrone for sure won a title.
