If I don't take a step toward helping to build a better country, what right do I have to bitch when things go wrong. The first, and easiest, step I can take is to VOTE. Also, I can protest (peacefully) and let my elected officials know how I feel. I can get other people registered to vote. I can take them with me when I go to the polls. The ‘peacefully’ part is where every new “movement” fails, and will always fail. All authority is derived from one single baseline source: physical force. Most of us may not want this to be the truth, yet it is the reality we continue to live in. It will never change, even if we wished it would. And this is how those in power have always been in power and will always continue to be in power: because no one else is willing to rise up and fight to take it. Go ahead and take the the high road, feel better about yourselves for being morally righteous and champions of peace. Just accept then that you will always be dominated and subjugated.

@@Kuato You're wrong. You only think this because you are an angry and violent person yourself and therefore you assume that all the people in power are like that too. Protesting worked in Iceland because Iceland is a democracy. The Water Protectors lost limbs and are being charged as terrorists because the American government believes that protesting should be swiftly and severely punished. By contrast, the coup participants were not arrested until months later, most of their sentences were extremely light (months in jail), and many of them (including the leaders) have yet to be arrested at all. Let this be a lesson to everyone. Do not protest for abortion rights because that will only get you beaten and charged with serious crimes. Instead, your response to the loss of aboriton rights should be to overthrow the government, because the government considers that a lesser crime than protesting.

What I noticed watching this is that at no point was religion mentioned. This matters because the United States was founded by religious leaders where the Bible ( written by men btw ) had influence on every day life including the writing of the constitution. As time has moved on from our founding fathers ( again a term frequently used reinforcing in the mind a male dominated society ) some equality has been made BUT nearly everywhere you go in the states religion is forefront in thoughts, feelings, JUDGEMENTS of others etc. Combine this with a mostly male dominated testosterone capitalistic society and there appears to be more in common with the highly religious male dominated and suppressed women country of Afghanistan than with Iceland.

As far as politics goes... money talks & screams & twists facts until no one wants to listen to it anymore. And of course, money (all those male oligarchs who've spent their lifetime undermining freedom and equality and subjugating all of us working folks and hell bent on destroying democracy and individual freedom investing in think tanks and lobbyists to bank "more") will buy the dumbest and most accommodating women to do their bidding. The rare Katie Porter (and some others) find themselves silenced by the crushing pressure of Money. New upstarts and others can't get the financial support they need to make their voices heard and actually represent the average Jill and Joe that toil and "make" the money that those greedy bastards can't get enough of. I'm disgusted and dismayed by women who capitulate to male supremacy and start becoming like their male counterparts - too often the case (think Thatcher). And now, the stripping of rights is really "taking us back" to medieval times and the rise of the machismo is the threat of death to all reason. I'm not hopeful. American dream is being priced out of reach; now, it's simply to survive another day. This 70 year old body has witnessed the backlash too many times! Forget the Bucket List, it's time to live out the rest of our lives in the streets!

I'm an American who has lived in the nordic region for over 20 years. The advantage that Iceland has is that its a racially homogenous society. It has very few immigrants and no history of slavery. These differences are significant.

Slavery played a much larger part in Norse society than most people are aware of. Slaves, or “thralls” as they were called, were present in most Norse communities, with many being taken in Viking raids across Europe. And vikings were also taken as slaves by pirates from the Ottoman Empire, who carried out slave raids from Northwest Africa.

The Westman Islands are literally named after slaves. "Westmen" were irish slaves the vikings brought with them.
