Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

Hey Zach! In my experience off-roading, and from what I’ve been told by other off-roaders, when you drive through the water it helps to clean out the treads of your tires so you continue getting traction. Also, the standing water means the consistency of the mud isn’t as thick (like soup) where as regular mud is much thicker (like play-dough) and will get stuck into the treads of your tires, essentially turning them into racing slicks.

Hey Zack, the reason standing water gets you stuck a lot less than mud is because the ground is firm enough that the water cant sink into it meaning it is also a lot firmer for the tires to grip, as apposed to mud where the water is soaking into the loose(er) ground meaning the tires are also going to sink and churn up the ground more. :)

The farmer I worked for always said the approach and leaving water the worst to go through. And yep that’s where we usually got stuck. And one year if remember right pulled him 14 times. And this was only a 40 acre field. Granted back then did not have rear wheel drive. That was one crappy day.
@jmurphy1973
@jmurphy1973 4 жыл бұрын
If there's standing water, theres usually a hard(ish) pan underneath it that supports the machine better. Mud usually means there's really just a deep layer of waterlogged soil that wont support anything. I hated mud more than anything when I ran a couple storage yards years ago. We never got a machine stuck where there was water but we had tons of trouble in muddy areas with no standing H2O.

Hey Zach : Really good to see that you are finally in the field. Tough Year ! Wow.... Bathrooms everywere... Just as I remember it. The science on the standing water is that you are using “ Flotation Tires “ of course. From my farm days... The first guy in the field sets the pace. My dad was the only farmer with a picker/sheller and grain dryer. We got in early and drove the neighbors crazy! Captain Al from Tampa 😎

If the ground is hard enough to hold the water on top, you can usually skip across it once, because the water isn't soaking in. When you get mud the waters already soaked in thus making it muddy and chance of getting stuck increases.

Zack, your observation about not getting stuck in standing water is right on. If there's standing water that means the ground probably has a pan underneath that'll hold you up. Conversely, some soils allow water just deep enough to keep it from pooling but turn that whole strata into mud. The perfect soil would be able to handle a lot of water, perking it down quickly so it doesn't cause pooling or top strata mud, but who has all perfect soils?
