Great honest and thoughtful review. Does the Fotorgear case allow the NFC to work? I like the idea of protecting the lenses but I want to be able to use google pay!!

Thank you 🙏 in all honesty I've never even thought about damaging the back of the phone. I have the photography kit phone case on with does elevate the back slightly. I believe the glass is Corning victus so it should in theory be resistant enough to not have to worry about it. If you are paranoid tho there are options like a "lens cap" (seen those online) and filter adapters that cover the whole back glass (from fotorgear). Hope that helps 👍

Bought the ND, Polarising and a UV filter (for lens protection only) ages ago, my other essential is an aluminium lens cap that attaches to the decorative ring (identical to the one that you have on the 3rd party case) - I know you get caps with the filters, but try stuffing all of that in your pocket - not easy hehe.

When I want to travel light I just use my filter pouch that fits 3 filters and that fits easily in my coat pocket 👍

Hi the FotorGear case makes the phone overall heavier since it is made out of aluminium Vs Xiaomi's plastic case but it does make it more versatile depending on what you want out of a phone case. It fits in nicely and the added shutter button is a bonus too and looks the part. The Xiaomi case only allows for filters to be used. The FotorGear case is a bit of a bargain and I have seen it on eBay for even cheaper, depends where you located I guess 👍

Question regarding the Fotogear case, how do you press the volume buttons for normal use? I don't see any on the case itself but there's bound to be a way to press them

Yes 2 physical metal buttons near the cold shoe mount 👍 theyre sitting flush with the case when the phone is not in the case and slightly protruding like on a normal case when in, hope that helps

Hi, i didn't understand wheather the retro case comes with the T-mount on which you screw the lens on. Or is it called megacase?

The screw on lens T mount adapter comes separately you can find it on their website, it also doubles up as a filter mount too and it clips onto the case 👍

@eduardohess7390 🤔 do you know what I never thought of that ! Since it is the same dimensions and screws on the same way it should work ! I'm 99.9% sure that would indeed do the job. Have a look on eBay as well I know I saw some lenses and cases on there, the adapter might also be there 👍

Astrophotography is indeed something I'd love to experiment with however where I live in the UK there is a lot of light pollution hence why I never gave it a go. If I manage to get away and be able to find a place suitable for it I will definitely play with it 👍

I'm on the fence about buying a 14 Ultra or a compact camera (Lumix LX10/ Sony RX100 series/Canon G7X series), what would you recommend? and pros and cons?

It really depends on the use case my friend. One is a phone obviously and the other is a point and shoot camera. If you are someone who knows what they're doing when it comes to photography (who shoots in manual all the time) then I'd say the 14 Ultra, if you're a beginner (who shoots in automatic most of the time) then get the point and shoot. More hard work to shoot with the 14 ultra but better results with both photos and videos.

How is the video quality ( standard and log ). Does it fare well with pro iphones?

I will definitely make a video about the video quality on the Xiaomi but in a nutshell yes, once you forget the built in camera app from video (it's horrible and over processed) and use a third party app like mcpro24fps or motion cam then you can record in 10 Bit LOG at 160mbs bitrate, slog3 or even RAW video, something even very few DSLRs can do... So yeah the capabilities are insane it's just sad that nobody talks about it and every KZbinr out there is like "iPhone is the king of video..."

Of course, the iPhone still has unsurpassed stabilization and the quality of switching between modules is still top-notch. BUT. Vivo's picture quality is better in all modes. There is a clear gap. If, for example, you will shoot video from a static position, for example, from a tripod, even with the stock camera app

If we were talking stock app only, absolutely agree, Xiaomi does pretty bad in the video department, wayyyy over processed... However and yes even to this day, the Xiaomi is the best phone for video thanks to it's hardware. See when it comes to the Xiaomi, they've given it a variable aperture something very few phones have. Add to this the fact it has a 1 inch type sensor able to record up to 14 bit makes it a beast ! Now pair it with an app like motion cam (which the Vivo unfortunately can't crack because they've locked the hardware ! ) and you end up with something very few mirrorless cameras can do, let alone phones !!! You get access to shooting RAW video, not h264 or h265 no, RAW ! And that is up to 4K60 in LOG ! If raw isn't your thing you can then use another app called mcpro24fps which unlocks the bitrate at which you can record video, allows to bypass the nasty ISP processing and record a clean LOG H265 at up to 4K60 in S-Gamut3 Cine and SLOG3 !!! It's easy to make the mistake of assuming the iPhone is the best at video when countless people tell you so, but they don't give you the full picture. Ok yes the iPhone now has 4K120 but the bitrate is too low and night shooting falls apart very quickly.

Even if you bought the whole set including the phone it's still cheaper than buying a Sony A7VI with all the gears it's less than 20% of the price. And that's something people don't talk about at all

Hey, could you please tell me if the photogear case uses the same mounting system for its ring as the xiaomi photography kit rings? By the photos on their web-site the 67mm adaptor ring looks identical to the original one from xiaomi photography kit, I wanna order retro case, but I do not know if I need to order it with their own 67mm adaptor or if the ring adaptor from xiaomi photography kit fits their case too. Thank you!

Hey yes it is 67mm so the Xiaomi rings which are also 67mm work with fotorgear's mounting system 😀
