Lisa Gade reviews the 2014 Edition Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. This is Samsung's second generation 10.1" Android tablet with the S Pen digital pen (Wacom pen). It's also their best 10" tablet to date, but you'll pay dearly: $549 for the 16 gig and $599 for the 32 gig. It has a lovely 2560 x 1600 display, Samsung Exynos octa 5420 1.9 GHz CPU, 3 gigs of RAM, a microSD card slot, dual band WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, and a GPS. well getting ios or android actually depends on your needs. I love my iphone but im choosing android as my tablet as i need the multi tasking and pen for my studies which ipad doesnt have (yet?) and with android i can do stuff i cant with my ios, well in some cases my ios has more apps than playstore but then again i dont need those. The most important apps are in android (for me) so i choose android for my larger gadget, ios for my phone, and win8.1 for my pc. All have different uses, needs and functions for my life to be more vibrant! :D im no apple, android or brand fanboy coz i love how different company has their own advantages and disadvantages. so why not get them all! :D

I had the Ipad Air since November 8, 2013. I just returned it (Jan 12, 2014) and got the Note 10.1 2014. Why? 1. I am used to android and needed the back button. Ipad without back button I felt lost and like I had to leave the app to go back. 2. Ipad screen was unresponsive in the very corners of the screen. I would have to keep taping away to get the screen/action to respond. 3. The Ipad just didn't do much more past basic stuff. I found it boring. Pros for Ipad. 1. Unbelievable sound from the speakers. 2. Fantastic battery life. 3. Size and weight. 4. Some apps are better written for the Ipad than the Android tabs. PS. Customer service said they have had many Ipad air returned, but very few Samsung notes, 10.1.

Art programs on Windows are more mature and varied. If you like pencil sketching then the Note 10.1 and Android will do nicely. For natural media paint tools like oils and brushes, Windows programs are still better. Airbrush is decent for Android, the rest of the brushes not so much.

I think I covered the lag (or lack of lag) issue in the video. The black bezel doesn't get nasty with fingerprint oils. You can use the Samsung standard feature to capture any screen and make notes on it. You can use Adobe Reader to annotate PDFs too.

I just got one for 329 on black friday. I am used to ipad. But my iPad 2 is getting sluggish now. I also have galaxy note 3 and love it. One of things I noticed with this tablet is it gets warm at the back after few minutes of use and one of the most annoying is on KZbin app when you go to fullscreen, somehow the track control on the bottom disappers. I tried to tap many places on screen but no avail. Hit back button and full screen mode turns off and the controls are available. If anyone knows of the solution please let me know since this will be one of my wishlist on whether I would keep this tablet or not (I know I got it for dirt cheap but I use youtube on tab about 25% of time.

It still has the Android lag. Every single review I've read/watched mentions the lag. I'm not going to put my faith in a magical future update that promises to fix the lag that may or may not materialize. Have been stung too many times with Android products.

I love this device so far! I'm a little upset that I have to wait for the new Android OS (KitKat) when it's available for the Nexus already, but otherwise, this is a wonderful tablet. I'm curious to know why you feel that way. I had an original iPad, as well as an iPad 4 - the difference w/ the iPad 4's high res display is like night and day compared to the iPad 2. You can read much smaller text on it that you wouldn't be able to on the iPad 2, and text in general is so much clearer. It's such a significant difference.

I work a lot on PDFs files like add some notes, hilights etc. I wonder if this tablet is made for this kind of work. Is it possible to work on PDFs file on my laptop, tramsfert it on my tablet and keep working on it and come back on my laptop ? (I use dropbox ...)

To be honest : you all want give Samsung the spot light for nothing. Everyone has their opinions , where as me i'm always and always will be a #android fan , because of the extra accessibility they give us to customize our product to our liking. That my opinion . I love that they include a smart pen , i personally like the new back cover leather stitching or hard mold as she called it. I've had this tablet for a week or so now and I love it, especially the s pen. On the subject of tablet's having a camera on them, when I use my phone's camera my hands shake badly as I'm not good at holding small cameras. I feel that holding the tablet will be easier. At least I hope so. I've used the s pen a few times and it works great for writing an email instead of having to type it.

The mass of new technology is making the laptop world seem more stable than it really is. I'm really trying my best to wait for a dual os tablet with windows 8 specs and android features... the windows 8 specs would future proof the android portion of the device, which is more than enough for me.

Lisa, is it possible to have multiple profiles on the same Note 10.1? The reason I ask is because I am buying a new tablet for Christmas that my GF and I can share. It would be easier if we could have separate profile logins so that the Web browser and various other apps save settings and logins specifically for that profile, to eliminate the need to constantly switch logins within the apps themselves. We both have Spotify, Gmail, have our own Google profiles, our own contacts, etc.

For me the part showing how the web browser load and start scrolling is the part most interesting for me. I want you to try show how laggy the webpage is before webpage is done loading. People in RL are trying scrolling the webpage when not done loading and the screen get frozen and jumping of lag and the finger is like running on the unresponsive screen. I want the tablet to scroll and load webpages as fast as a desktop webpage the pinch is not that important to show how fast the tablet is.

Thanxs for your reply Lisa but the version I downloaded comes from the Samsung own appstore and is the Sketchbook Pro version for Galaxy. It is not a free version but the complete Pro version but there whas a special text "A gift for you from Samsung" in the appstore. Maybe that this is only for the European appstore because whe don't get that 50 dollar credit they get in the US.

I think the biggest thing still at the is the go systems of each platform if you're already invested in hundreds or even thousands of applications it's hard to walk away from a platform to go to another one. I think ultimately that's the really the bigger question even then hardware specs of a piece of hardware. You could easily spend thousands over the course of years and applications and not even realize it until you start thinking of a platform switch.

It's definitely a big step up. I like your view it will be interesting to see Microsoft surface 2 how they implemented improvements. sad to say there it is said that they're not improve the cameras too much. i've always had a theory Lisa it gets to a point where for tablet you might as will buy a laptop for the value ratio than my opinion at least. All considering that really isn't so expensive compared to a surface pro at 900 though it does have a beast of the processor by comparison

If you format your external drive to ExFat (Under mac & Windows possible), you will be able to use large files (4 GB) on your note 10.1. I use an external disk on my current Note 10.1 2012 with no problems at all. Greetings from The Netherlands

So far I have not seen anything special to justify the high price tag.Why does this tablet need 3GB for, to increase the price tag. The screen has better resolution...that's about it. They still use micro ports instead of normal size, adapters sold separately. Wacom pen is not the greatest for note taking in college, a keyboard dock is best. S-pen would be better on mini tablet, perhaps on a Win8 tablet. This is way over priced. At least it brings down the price on the previous Galaxy 10.1

Phillip Jernigan I'd also like to know how your boss does anything work related on an iPad. Without a file structure you can manipulate, it's a mystery how he can work with attachments and files. I have a panic attack while using iPads, because they're so limited and make you feel hamstrung when coming from an Android tablet.

I love Lisa's tech reviews. The has a knack for presenting the devices in a practical and common sense manner that really provides the information you need to properly evaluate a product without all the jargon/buzzwords/Marketing speak. the video's are really good at showing the product in non glossy or glamorous filter and reflects how it would appear in everyday life.

I'm having a galaxy 10.1 I bought in Jan 2013, am I able to upgrade my apps to the what you showed us there? especially for S pen apps, that's what I care about. That "could" function at 23:58 for S pen is really helpful, can I get it by just upgrading the system? since I don't think I will buy that 2014 edition while i'm already using a great tablet, thanks!

That's actually the old one, with the bar at the bottom with clock and stuff. Samsung has been releasing system updates for the old Galaxy Tab 2 and stuff and they look like what the Note 2014 has, with the top tab and dragging it down, etc. The Note 2 will probably get an update soon to change the system as well to the bar at the top like the Note 2014

Great HW, alas, with no updates shortly after the product release(look at samsung's history), it turns into a very expensive paperweight fairly quickly. Sure, you can still keep using it, flashing it with unoficial roms, but for 550USD, i would expect to have my device supported for at least another 2 - 3 years.

Is there a non-samsung android tablet that supports a wacom pen and I can have side by side apps running? Also want to be able to attach a keyboard with mousepad to it like asus transformer pad so I can sit it on my stomach while lying on the bed and still have it stay upright (softcover keyboards can't do that). Does such an animal exist?

I own the original Galaxy Note 10.1. It was a great tablet but the Samsung Touchwiz software is GARBAGE. After only three months, my awsome Note 10.1 turned into a choppy, laggy mess. I rarely use my 10.1 now. Hopefully, this new version wont dissapoint like the original does. Either way, I'm finished with Samsung. Very excited about the upcoming iPad and Surface tablets.

Overall I think this is a high quality, , versatile, well featured tablet. S pen finally makes sense on this device, not so much on myNote 2. Also waiting for release of Ativ Q.

i love this tablet i was at best buy and i was using it i fell in love with it multiwindow and the floating apps function is great im a huge multitasker on my galaxy s3 and i also love the design of this tablet. i just really wish that the pull down wasn't so ugly that is where i wish they used stock android. lisa are you going to review the blackberry Z30?

In addition Apple are being surpassed by Samsung because they offer great customization and, wait for it: EXPANDABLE MEMORY! :D Something the iPad fails to do. Lisa, I have the 3G version of the old note 10.1, I love it and take it everywhere, since my sim card is in it I end up using it to answer calls as infrequent as they are. I have a wireless blue tooth headset and it's so small that I came up with an idea to integrate a the headset into the Spen, it's still a work in process but I'd like to know what you think about that.

Samsung is not a great company as it used to be, just research SAMSUNG KNOX, US goverment approved (read NSA approved) security implementation build on SELinux (another NSA product), anything that has NSA approval just screams BACKDOOR!!!! This tablet is full of it.

From what I understand the app on the Note 2014 edition is called "SketchBook for Galaxy" Looks and works the same as Sketchbook Pro.You have to get it from the Samsung App store as it is not free on Google Play. Some people are also saying that the app was installed after doing a system update.

Total crap plastic, touch wiz laggy, octa is total joke and they want £500 for it they think we are stupid to fix Samsung takes no less one year to push proper updates like they did with galaxy s4 never recommend anyone, maybe after one year when they get cheaper and work optimized properly!!!
