DESCRIPTION
The TicWatch Pro 5 is an upgrade to the TicWatch Pro 3 ULTRA GPS and is about the same size, only thinner and with a different arrangement of the buttons on the side. It still incorporates two completely different screens bonded together and dynamically switched through Layered Display Technology. This allows for super low power consumption when the LCD screen is active (looks like your old digital watch) and a vivid color OLED screen for active use of the watch. Together they insure you can always see the time, indoors or out, bright or dark.
New features unique to the TicWatch Pro 5 smartwatch includes:

Please note that simply using the second, monochrome display as the AoD is NOT Essential Mode. Essential Mode is a distinct setting which can be activated either on a schedule, in Smart mode, or manually in which the watch's sensors are active but the smart functionality is unavailable but the watch will last roughly 45 days, if memory serves. Page 17 on the manual says "Notes: ULP display does not represent Essential mode.". I thought the same at first, too! It's a great watch.

Wow, thanks for the clarification. You're absolutely right, and the concepts are a bit challenging to tease apart. I suppose you can run the watch with just the monochrome display and not have the watch in Essential Mode, and that would consume more power, but not as much as using a constantly on AMOLED display. I'm pretty sure that Essential Mode requires not using the AMOLED display at all, but I'm not totally sure about that. Anyway, your point is well taken and thanks again for the clarification. I was wondering, if one wears the watch to bed to get sleep data, night heart rate, blood oxygen measurements, etc., and "Smart" essential Mode will kick in when you're sleeping or when you take the watch off, how would that mode affect the data being collected overnight, since obviously using those sensors consumes power. In other words, does Smart Essential Mode dumb down the TicWatch to just a Watch? Since Mobvoi is the only company offering this level of technology, it's not something we commonly come across when reviewing smartwatches.

@@SWT Hi there! That's one of the cool things about essential mode. Is that it still tracks steps, heart rate, VO2, you can even use the compass, and it fully tracks sleep as well. Well, really It seems like the only real downside is that you can't like see your messages or anything like that, but you can see that you have them, which is interesting. You can't use the advanced apps and such but I usually put my phone on essential mode before bed every night and it tracks it just fine. It's really a cool little feature. I use the monochrome screen for my AOD and then I just manually put my watch in essential mode when I'm at work or when I'm not expecting a lot of messages from my family or before bed and I pretty handily get 3 plus days. It's a neat feature but Mobvoi owns the patent on it, so that's why you don't see others copying it. Love your videos, and thank you! ​@@SWTYes, it does require not using the OLED, but you can schedule it to only run at night while you're sleeping and it'll still track steps and sleep. So you can literally add 8 hours of battery life just by scheduling essential mode at night when you're sleeping

​@@SWTYes, if you go to bed it will still measure your sleeping, heart rate, and an essential mode. It still keeps track of your steps. Which is why I think it's useful for people to schedule central mode from 9 :00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. or whatever their sleep schedule is.

Hi! Great review! All the sensors work, even when the watch goes into essential mode. This mode shuts down the OS (including the backlight) but the watch carries on working, collecting data, via it's firmware on some kind of low-level capacity. Once essential mode is over by you restarting it or automatically, all the data measured is presented to the OS and normal operation proceeds.@@SWT

Wow your review has been a lot more concise than any review of this watch that I have seen. I am so very torn between this watch and the Pixel Watch 2. What kills it for me getting this watch is that Mobvoi has not added Google Voice Assistance and they have said when they will add it and when they will update to Wear OS 4 or anything higher. Mobvoi has been really bad at updates and patches in the past. I am rocking the Tic Watch E2 and it has surprised me how durable it has been with my use and abuse.

Yes, you have access to Google apps on this one, but just the ones designed to work with WearOS. WearOS (now version 3) is a custom version of Android made for smartwatches, so the apps fit better and run more smoothly on WearOS Android watches. You can download the apps directly to the watch, or you can download them on your Android phone and an interface app will be installed on your watch (needs to be paired to your phone, of course). For things like "Easy Voice Recorder", that allows you to use the app on your watch and transfer the recordings to your phone from within the app. No that it appears Android smartwatches are starting to be phased out and are no longer growing as a smartwatch segment, WearOS 3 watches, though more expensive, may see more growth. Correct. No ECG function that I can find either, but a relatively extensive heart health assessment which, I presume, is being derived from the optical sensor data of heart rate and heart rate variability measurements. Note that we're also not seeing lorentz scatter diagrams from the overnight SpO2 readings like some other watches collect when using the "scientific sleep" option.

Thanks so much! It's a passion to really go deep with these reviews. Sometimes I think they are too long, but there's so much to cover.
