I got the Moccamaster Select which gives you an option to select a half pot (4 to 6 cups) which slows down the feed of water to maintain the proper brewing time for a smaller batch. I would highly recommend that model if you brew a lot of small batches.

How do you recommend small batch brewing (max 4 cups) for those that don’t have a select model?

Hi, great video! Quick question. Your recipe is different from what MM recommends. According to their recipe they use 55g for the 1L. Thoughts? Have you tried both? Do the machines you use decide to use ever change your choice in ratio?

Good information, thank you. Btw from what I understand it’s recommended to rinse paper filter to get avoid getting a paper taste in your coffee.

You're exactly right! I may have not mentioned it, but you can definitely see I did it. I would absolutely recommend every time to fully (and I mean fully) rinse your paper filter prior to brewing.

By medium grind size you mean something between V60 and Chemex ?

I bought this for my husband for Xmas. He only drinks one cup a day .. rarely 2. Is it possible to just measure how much he would use for 1 cup in this machine and brew? Does it have to be half a carafe or full?

you should try to use if you can find it ... swiss gold filter ... then you get the coffee oils in the coffee which really enhanves the flavour ... you will never use paper again!

The reusable filter you mention is not recommended for the Moccamaster. Incidentally I tried it. It was a fail.

so you used 1 to 15 ratio of coffee to water...sounds good :)

I really wish the plastics they used on the glass carafe and brew basket didn't feel so cheap, thin and flimsy. It is otherwise a great coffee maker. But considering that those are the components you touch, and considering the price of the machine, they could have made it feel better. honestly, my $25 Mr. Coffee feels more premium. It's a shame.

I think you ground your coffee a little to fine. A full pot should be about 4 minutes?

According to Technivorm, 1 liter should brew in about 5.5 to 6 minutes. It takes 4 minutes for all the water to flow into the brew basket and then an additional 1 to 2 minutes for the basket to finish draining into the pot.

Great overview! It seems the Moccamaster does not do a great job of saturating the grounds. Almost all professional reviews recommend stirring. To me, that defeats the purpose of using an auto drip. Might as well stick with pour overs. I really want to like this machine but I always come back to that need to stir.

Totally understand. For me, it’s a question of flow rate consistency. So much that, even though I may need to stir - I could likely never replicate back to back with a pour over.

why is the price so expensive? literally all of the parts except for the base/heater section are plastic lol

I think the fact that it's not made in China plays a big role in the cost.

Copper heating element is a main feature. Hotter faster, and won’t burn out and potentially cause a fire. Also, completely hand assembled. Not in China.

The quality of a cup of coffee will be determined by the 5 things that go into a cup. I admit this gives consistency, but at the end of morning its just ~200 F water over the grounds. As one reviewer said, "Any notion to the contrary is pure hype and the product of an overactive imagination." Its a great looking machine, but for the price I will stick to my Chemex. I would ask this: does it pass the shame test? Similar to a $400 toaster, To me its one of those things where if you had guests over you would be ashamed to admit how much you paid for a drop coffee maker.
