CAUTION: This is not a good tutorial on how to properly model with FreeCAD. I do some things here like attaching sketches to faces or linking edges of the 3D body into a sketch. These things should be avoided in FreeCAD 0.19 - I'm just doing it here because all I cared about was SPEED MODELING. My model is not very stable considering later design changes. Please keep this in mind!

You said that attaching sketches to faces isn't very stable considering later design changes. How would one take a more stable approach if trying to make a sketch that's on a particular face? Creating a plane that's at the same place as the face and attaching the sketch to the plane instead?

what would make a stable design? are there rules to follow or perhaps a chapter on it?

Realilzation: When making straight lines connected to arcs it is faster to use the polyline. Polyline has a keyboard command ( 'm' ) within most FreeCAD versions, which will change with each press to different characteristics and also an 'Arc.' No needing to go from 'line' to 'arc' commands. Less mouse use. Less time.

Ok that was interesting to follow along too. For some reason polar patteren did not work with the fillets. I had to use polar pattern first with the pockets and then fillet each corner. Not sure if I was doing something wrong or not but Nice! Thanks

Hello, At 2:27, how do you rotate the sketch in 3D ? Are you using a macro ? If so, where is it found ? Thank you.
@FreeCADAcademy4 жыл бұрын
Hi! If you have the "CAD" control style activated in your preferences (my standard setting) you need to press and keep pressed middle mouse button and right mouse button at the same time. Then drag the mouse!

@@FreeCADAcademy FUCK YES! I'm transitioning from Fusion360 to FreeCAD because the former is linux compatible and windows 10 has pissed me off for the last time. Being able to rotate and move the part freely without having to right click to change the manipulation style is awesome and something I took for granted in Fusion 360. Glad to see its in FreeCAD after all!

In 1:03 you have attached a new sketch to the face. In new movies, your advice is not to do that only use the datum plane instead (to omit problems after changing face ID). My question is: the datum plane has no features of an old shape. I understand why you have used fixing to the face instead of to the datum plane but please tell me how to do same with datum plane when you have no connection to past shape? shape binder? datum line? reference angle? I mean about the fully parametric approach. Thanks for that video. Cheers!!!
@FreeCADAcademy3 жыл бұрын
I'd simply go with a datum plane parallel to the XY plane and a parametric offset in z-direction to the XY plane. This offset could be linked with the total height of the model.

Great Demo! It would be even better if it worked. [ FC19.3 ] I tried many times to repeat exactly the steps but when ( at 00:54 ) I try to fillet the edges I get an error "Failed to create fillet". I found that If I try a simpler pad created from one single sketch I can perform the fillet but if a simpler padded and polar patterned sketch is utilized then FreeCAD will generate this error. Has anyone come up with a solution yet ?

I tried to follow in your footsteps, but freecad always presented me with redundancy messages in constraints. I noticed this didn't happen in your video. Did you do any editing? Or reconfigured something in freecad? I am new to the software and would like to know more. Forgive my english, i'm brazilian and i'm using google translator to help me. Thank you very much in advance!

I am going through tutorials too and ran into a similar issue with a different tutorial. It might be a different version, it might be us pressing an extra button or missing a button, or it could be a bug, but I was able to get around it on the other tutorial (I will try this one later). I was able to find the constraints view and look over the global list of constraints. The page will show you which constraints are redundant, has an auto-remove redundant constraints button, and highlights what each constraint does in the sheet. I was able to use this to discover which constraints was redundant and remove it, though I am not experienced yet to be able to tell exactly why it was added. I hope this helps a little.

in the real world, this part would likely be made by casting. All surfaces would require draft. My first FreeCad project, I am tackling a casting. I find applying draft to complex cast surfaces is really painful. I have yet to get a successful part the way I want it.
