This was by far the coolest monster I have ever seen in a movie. And even after I seen it, the horror level it built up did not go away. I was literally horrified every second it was on screen. The build up for it's reveal was so well done, with hints and images of it. And the clever adaptation of it, someone needs all the kudos for this monster.

I feel that Moder , maybe due to his bastard lineage, requires a very specific kind of worship. I think he needs to be worshipped by cowards. the only time it directly communicates with anyone is when it calls Luke a coward. I think Moders little cult is a cult of people too cowardly to escape, that's how Luke eventually escapes, by overcoming his fear, striking Moder and running from the forest. Luke was to much of a coward to help his friend, thus is marked by it and marked by Moder for his cult to apprehend and bring into the fold.

@@jinpachibobochan3532 when you consider Modern lineage it makes sense, Fenris Wolf was feared by then Aesir because of his strength, Heal the half dead woman was also feared and given the rule of the underworld and Jormungandr was thrown into the ocean for being too large and powerful. If Moder is the child of Loki and Angeboda then it too would have a twisted cursed sort of fate. Loki was very fruitful, but is spawn was often seen as cursed. Except for Sleipnir, the 6 legged horse whom Loki gave birth too, but he was only an animal.

The difference is that Loki actually has the consent of the people and creatures he sleeps with most of the time (at least as much as a horse can give "consent" to another horse, and as much as you can interpret consent based on old norse sources). He's definetely not as creepy and explicitly rapey as Zeus.

@@mmh4378 First I have no idea how you can speak for Adrian, in terms of what he perceives as realistic about it, second there is nothing about what you just said that offer any reason why this would be considered REALISTIC. Surely you can see the flaw in your statement. Surely ... but just in case you can't: - Who the heck is "everyone" anyway? - Why should it matter what words anyone uses about it, when the fundamental question is whether or not the image actually maps onto some semblance of REALITY. Even if you wanted to be speculative about it and say "well IF demons existed THIS is what they would realistically look like", you would still have to offer some kind of context and rationale for HOW it is realistic ... and what you are really referring to by using the word "realistic" as opposed to say "coherent" or "physically feasible" or "matching the descriptions of this or that text really well" or whatever.

So...... Let me see if I’ve got this right. The creature finds people who’ve suffered horrible pain. It finds people who’re truly miserable and have just about lost all will to go on. Then it FORCES them to live forever, and demands that they worship it and sacrifice people to it in return. Not to mention that they still age, and in the end they wind up all dried up and mummified. Seems like a PRETTY SHITTY deal to me. Moder was screwing those people over BIG TIME.

I forget the fact that within this story, it's canon that there are other monsters of its kind. It is mentioned that Moder is an offspring which means she has kin, others just like her. It's just so eerie to think that somewhere there's another one like her, perhaps with a different form, confined to its own boundaries but is just as terrifying, mysterious and as brutal. What happened to Luke and his friends wasn't an isolated case. Those who wander deep, unknown territories may have fallen victims to these creatures.

@Soldier4USA2005
@Soldier4USA2005 5 жыл бұрын
OK. The formula is something very effective, yet amazingly simple. In a haunted house, there are several types of scares. Pop scares are when something jumps out at you from somewhere. Typically from behind some piece of set architecture or a curtain. Reveal scares are when you're looking at something and it slowly reveals itself. And there are peripheral scares. Those you see in movies a lot and is their version of pop scares. What those are, is when the shot has you deliberately looking at one side of the screen...such as a close up of a persons face on one half and the other is the background and it's typically darker or it's all dark except for one spot....then something moves or whatever in that dark space. The reason why this works is because peripheral vision triggers the subconscious. It's why you get spooked when someone comes up from the side or when you see sudden movement out of the corner of your eye, you get jumpy or go on the defensive. In haunted houses, these are also known as distraction scares. Something catches your eye and you look at it while some guy in a mask comes out of a dark spot and grabs you. After knowing all of that, especially that last one, I know where to look during a movie and end up not getting scared at all. I may jump due to sudden movement, but not scared. I could go in greater detail, but I would end up writing a dissertation that would crash KZbin.

When forced to make the giantess Skaði laugh, so that she wouldn't wage war on the gods, he did so by tying one end of a rope around his testicles and the other end around a goat's beard. What ensued was a ridiculous game of tug-of-war, accompanied by much yelling and bleating from both Loki and the goat.

Wish more horror films took inspiration from Norse mythology. The Ritual was a great suspenseful horror movie with hints of psychological horror. The cast kept the down time parts still engaging and kept the film moving along. Only wished that they leaned more into the Norse elements and gave the Moder followers more screen time to build even more suspense until Moders reveal. But all in all the film was pretty unique and a good watch. Will have to keep an eye out for the director next movie.

As much as i love the genre, I'm tough when it comes to horror movies. This one BLEW ME AWAY. I can't remember the last time a movie genuinely scared me like this one did. I was glued from start to finish. Easily one of the most impressive parts was the creature. The reality of an unseen terror often pales in comparison to the mystery, but this thing was actually scarier when fully glimpsed. Awesome movie.

The movie is ingenious in it's mechanics following the spirit of the novel. The novel is amazing. The visual design of Moder as described in the book is an amazing expansion. The book, however has a much larger desperation and injury rate of the characters, especially Luke (who's got his skull fractured and head bandaged for the last 3rd of the book). Also the movie is missing 3 teens who try to summon the beast and are wannabe black metal band

There is a common parallel between most cultures deities that I appreciate.. those with deep emotional pain and trauma are thought of as having a quality to them that would either make them more deserving of life/afterlife or seen more of as a wise being. It's similar in Eastern cultures as well.

I went into this film not knowing anything about it. I found it to be one of the most atmospheric and effective horrors I have seen. I was massively impressed with the way they revealed monster....and what a monster it is.

This is one of the very few horror movies I liked that actually got me tense and waiting for what was going to happen next. Love how the movie did not show the monster right away which only made it better when it did show up at the end

This was an absolutely phenomenal film. I went in with no expectations and maybe that’s why it blew me away. The creature model was exceptional and there was one scene when it reached toward the sky that I was dumb struck.

I like that it isn't psychological thrilleresque. Just random guys who wandered into the wrong gods forest. Simple concept and brilliantly pulled off.
