Does the distribution of raw assessment marks in a class have any effect?
@ScienceReady Жыл бұрын
No, only the final internal rank matters.

@@ScienceReady im not sure if it is that simple. NESA’s website has an example of moderation whereby the subjects do not simply inherit their ranks respective external mark. And I hope it isn’t that simple. If rank 1 is significantly ahead of rank 2 internally, where rank 2 is much closer to the average, but they perform similarly in the HSC, I’d expect rank 2’s internal mark to be closer to the cohorts mean rather than simply reflecting their HSC performance.

Yes, the exactly process is slightly more detailed than I had described but the raw marks from the school assessment are not considered during moderation. The school assessment marks are given to students such that the average school assessment mark for a school should equal to the average HSC exam mark achieved by students from that school. This process still respects the rank order and DOES NOT consider the distribution of raw school assessment marks achieved by students from that school. This means only the distribution of exam marks achieved by students affects moderation. For example, a student ranked 2nd in their school may not necessarily receive the 2nd highest exam mark as their school assessment mark as this is affected by the average of the exam marks by the school cohort. If the average exam mark is higher, then this student can expect a positive effect on their school assessment mark; vice versa. This is what I mean by unless you are ranked first in school and have achieved the highest exam mark from your school, your school assessment mark will be affected by your school's performance to some extent. I hope that helps!

@@ScienceReady The distribution of 'raw assement marks' does in fact matter. Nesa recieves the 'raw assement marks' of the sudents as well as their respective ranks. Nesa then only looks at the ranks and the gaps betwen ranks, and ignores the actual marks themself. The person ranked first gets the highest exam mark, rank last gets the lowest exam mark (where possible), and then all the others are moderated according to their ranks, and the gaps between ranks. It is not as simple as purely taking the mark from that rank in the HSC exam (expect for rank first and last). Thanks for the video anyway!

This is from NESA’s website on moderation: From a statistical point-of-view, it does not matter if the school assessment marks are ‘too high’ or ‘too low’, or ‘too wide’ or ‘too narrow’. Moderation adjusts the marks so they are able to be fairly compared to the marks at other schools. So the actual distribution of the school marks does not matter. However, NESA's moderation does account for the relative gap between ranks of students.

For the bonus points do they look at if you get a Band 6 in the HSC alone or the average of internal and external?

Great video. With the moderation section… say bob ranks third internally. He will get the third highest mark achieved by his cohort in the HSC exam as his school assessment mark. My question is, is this third highest hsc mark ‘aligned’ before it is applied to his school based assessment mark?
@ScienceReady Жыл бұрын
Yes, he will receive the third highest mark after alignment and moderation as his school assessment mark.

4:07 I thought the moderated school assessment mark still maintained the “mark gap” between each student based on raw school assessment mark?? Eg. In this instance the gap between the 3 students is 10 marks. So I would have thought Annie’s School Assessment Mark would be 85 and Bob’s 75, which maintains the mark gap consequently based on school assessment mark - or Raw/unmoderated or whatever it is?

Hi Let’s say i am ranked 9/12 for physics And the rank mark achieved a score of 70% But in the hsc i got 90% would they moderate this 70% up or not, because what if my teacher was a harsh marker on me during the year with effected my rank Thanks
@ScienceReady Жыл бұрын
Assuming 70% is your raw school mark - whether your school moderated mark will be high or lower depends on how you and your cohort performs in the HSC exam. If the average exam mark is higher than the average school raw mark, then you will likely see your 70 being moderated higher.
@bobbinghead Жыл бұрын
So if you get a low internal rank you will get a bad moderated mark even though you could have gotten a good mark in the hsc exam?
@ScienceReady Жыл бұрын
Everything is relative so I can’t speak about your circumstances. In general, if you do much better in the HSC exam compared to how you’ve done internally, then your moderated mark will be lower than the exam mark.
@hilalc981 Жыл бұрын
What happens if you're ranked like 10/15 in physics and your averaging like 70 and then in hsc you get an 85? What will the final hsc be then
@ScienceReady Жыл бұрын
Your school mark will depend on how your school cohort does in the HSC exam. I advise looking up how your school has historically performed in HSC physics and asking your teacher for an approximation as they would know how your current cohort compares to the past cohorts.
