The DE LUX RIVER 40′ is a truly impressive small container home. The 8-foot "bridge" creates extra width between the two 40-foot containers and a vaulted ceiling with clerestory windows and a loft space. Prefab manufacturer, Relevant Buildings also has a tiny home version with two 20-foot containers. 👉 *Watch our tour of their other innovative model container homes, and a look at the conversion process:* kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGSth4iYnaZneNE

I have been a long time advocate of using shipping containers to build homes.. When I see shipping containers I think of affordable housing for the family who could not afford a home and the homeless who never had one.. The whole idea back around 18 to 20 yr's ago was to build homes for the homeless, and not a 1/4 of a million dollar home for the trendy looking for a neat place to live... Containers were a cheep source of building materials to keep the total cost down for building homes for those in need.. Now that the trendy have entered into the picture container homes are no longer affordable... Shipping containers at one time could be gotten at almost next to nothing, and sometimes even for only the cost to transport the containers to the building site... Since the trendy entered the picture, container home manufacturers have been popping up all over the globe, and the dream of building homes for those who are most in need is a forgotten dream of the past... There are a lot of people out there in this world who could have benefitted from container homes, now only to watch that dream pass right by only to maybe collect some of the discarded cardboard boxes of high end appliances in those new trendy container homes to build their new homes.... Where did this well meant dream go wrong....?

These are giant rectangular cans, like aircraft. VIP aircraft interiors require a skill set that would also bring most of what’s missing in living spaces designed to work well in giant cans. This includes many different aesthetic looks at a five star hotel trim level. I already know how to do this - apply the same basic approach to building codes and standards. With no requirement to withstand 9 - 16 Gs , a lot opens up as just easier.

Well executed obviously. I appreciate that it wasn't made to look like your average new construction ranch. But for me the whole purpose of going with shipping containers isn't the novelty of using them as building blocks but keeping costs down. $250,000 is the price of a new ranch home in many states. Or much less. I plan to build the smallest house California allows. (800 square feet). Five 20s. Covered outdoor space will be used as a hallway. Minimal cuts to connect the ends together so there is strength in thr middle. Doors and a few small windows for entry and light. Otherwise I might as well build from the ground up. I do like this interior design though.

I think the original idea behind the tiny/ small sustainable house movement was simplicity; low cost; sustainability and minimalism. I know it means different things to different people, but that is all lost here in my opinion. I don't see the appeal here for people looking for regular homes either. Also, specifically on shipping containers as homes, their economics and restrictions often don't merit their use over various traditional building methods in my opinion. I think it is largely a trend. Perhaps they are useful if you want to put a solid structure on a pontoon or a truck bed. Great for low cost storage and in some cases animal housing where insulation isn't required though.

Absolutely love the layout, decor and design of this house. If I had $250K and the money to buy the lot too and build this in Canada where I live, I would do it. Sadly, fullu serviced building lots in Canada have become stratospherically expensive, if they're located anywhere near a city or town of any significant size. Only the rich can now afford housing in Canada. Our municipal governments, with their hyper-restrictive zoning laws and slow-as-molasses permitting systems, our do-nothing provincial governments and also the federal government itself are to blame. Add in greedy corporations and developers and you have a perfect storm.

There is a line in which a container home starts failing to be a 'container home' and i think this qualifies. Basically the cost advantage gets diminished while the original intention for container home living gets overlooked. Might as well just throw up a wood frame structure and be done with it.

I love the bridge solution. Two side opening containers with open sides facing each other is my preference. What CAD system do you use and do you have any interest in Designers? I’ve designed aircraft interiors for 25 years, including VIP and Head of Sate. But I’m interested in housing and everything going on a plane is self contained by regulations requiring validation at top assy level. I’m interested in maximizing the bridge as a standard and basic top assy that can be accessorized and stretched in 48” increments. A standard “trough” for plumbing, and standard channel that can run single or in pairs along the top edge, between container and bridge, for electrical. Also air/heat ducting could be integrated into bridge and/or channel.

Wow.... beautiful but..... $230 per sq. ft. seems terribly high compared to a national avg. of $100 to $150 per sq ft. for a turnkey build. I don't get it, other than the novelty. Furthermore, today's construction techniques are highly advanced regarding energy efficiency, air flow, moisture control and so on. Further, attic space in standard construction obviously provides far more usable storage area per sq. ft. That being said, I must say this build is certainly well-thought-out and aesthetically beautiful ...for a shipping container.

Depends where, average cost of a new house nationally is over $300K and getting an older house can have issues and eventually you'd need to update it to meet modern code, which is more strict and demanding on the minimum standards allowed. Average home actually cost home owners quite a bit more over time... Here's just one example of why... www.zillow.com/research/hidden-costs-of-homeownership-16072/ Something to consider as better built homes do cost more but less maintenance and other costs over time can add up to more than the difference from purchase price over the years...

@ZeoCyberG
@ZeoCyberG 3 жыл бұрын
@@elbeno9304 Sorry but fact is this is in Oregon and not Carolina, and too much again depends. Location is a big determination of multiple factors that effect costs, what people can afford, etc. because things like costs and what people's income can be varies across the country. Even same structures can have different costs depending on location... Meaning this can be done more cheaply elsewhere but that's elsewhere and they are quoting for where they are located, which is something that must be understood about the real estate market. Lots of factors contribute to this... Like different locations can have very different climates and weather conditions, different things to worry about like flooding, hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, etc. Be in different economy zones and population density areas, different access to jobs and pay ranges, different regulations and zoning, etc. Different locations can have different material costs, different local labor costs, different permits and other requirement costs... All on top of how the structure itself can be done differently... So there's a heck of a lot more to it...
@NicCanDance
@NicCanDance 3 жыл бұрын
@@ZeoCyberG it doesn’t really depend where, because 250k is only the cost of construction, it doesn’t include the cost of the land. Plus, that 300k average probably represents way more square footage. I’d also wonder about the resale value of a home like this, due to it only being two bedrooms. Plus it’s so non traditional, which might be a turn off for buyers. What about renovation? How easy would it be to find builders to expand it, and would the unusual build make it more expensive to renovate? I mean, it really seems like the major advantage of container homes was meant to be their low cost so at this price point it doesn’t seem worth it.
@ZeoCyberG
@ZeoCyberG 3 жыл бұрын
@@NicCanDance No, it depends where. All costs can vary, including materials, labor, insurance, etc. While, unless it's on wheels, many places will require you follow all the same processes and fees that you would do for any traditional building construction. So permits, impact fees, site prep, foundation, meeting building codes or getting an engineer to sign off on it, etc. can all still apply and you typically will need to also purchase land to place it... Here's an example of how it can end up working out that way... kzbin.info/door/noUKype0fVkWtCleYWBT1w But in such cases it gets treated like any other real estate property. The hurdle is getting it done in the first place as it's not a traditional build and the system resists anything new. So things like getting financing to build it will be very hard but once built then that all goes away and a buyer can then get financing, etc. just like for any other home purchase. Problem is people don't understand how the system works. A lot of costs are tied into the Bureaucracy. Places like California you can run into tens of thousands of combined fees before you even lay the foundation, for example... Exemptions like sheds under 200 Sq Ft often get voided the moment you turn it into an actual home with plumbing, etc... While non-permanent structures have to be actually movable to actually avoid most of the cost of the system. It doesn't help when people make assumptions of what can be lower cost, like containers were never intended to be used as homes. So there's quite a bit that has to be done to them to turn them into homes, which usually works out that unless you keep it basic and usually limited to just one container then costs can quickly add up and it can become more expensive than other options. The real reason to use containers is thus recycling and having an option people can DIY as building the framing is often considered a major hurdle for people building their own homes. They can be treated as non-permanent structure, some builders even permanently attach a trailer to them so they function the same as a THOW but that varies according to local rules for where you will be placing it... There are educational channels for figuring out the actual costs of container home construction and what is required to get them done to specific price point. Like check out Containing Luxury, they even offer courses for people serious about learning how to build their own container home.

@@lisathompson5742 By removing a side of each shipping container to attach to the middle part, they have taken away the one advantage of using the shipping containers which is durability. By covering it in wood and siding, it can now burn as well. You could accomplish the same thing at a cheaper price by having a couple of exterior walls made of metal, but since this house has such a huge weak spot in the middle, I don't really see the point of that either. The roof is what gets destroyed in most homes, and that is another weak spot on this house. I do understand the appeal to shipping container homes. I live in tornado ally. This set up isn't good for that. You will still be left with no real shelter when a tornado rips through the middle of your house and takes the roof with it.

I thought The whole idea of a shipping container house is to build cheaper . But my goodness at 250k I’m not interested at all. I would opt out for a real house. Ridiculous price ! You won’t sell many of these at that cost!

How do you join the containers to the bridge given that they are different materials?

Gorgeous work but not sure who this is for. After the cost of a construction crew the land the permitting and the kit is $250k by itself you might as well have bought a regular house it’s going to be 450k or more. The whole idea of a container home is to reduce cost but again I can appreciate all the work put into it.
