Hiiiii!! So I wanted to address the "Fast Fashion" issue: Trust me, I totally get it. That's why I usually push so hard for thrift hauls and buying vintage/used, and very rarely buy from 'mall stores', but sometimes stores like Target are all that people have access to, so it becomes really difficult for me when I want to illustrate a point and educate, but also don't really want to support fast fashion. Going forward in the series, I definitely want to explore more ethical and sustainable brands (hopefully ones that don't cost me an arm and a leg but I understand quality comes with price), so if you guys have any suggestions, that'd be great!

Hi, I also like to thrift shop. And Im not a huge fan of buying clothes that half the town owns, lol. When I do buy from a big marketing stores I go to Kohls, Tj Max, Walmart has cute crochet/ lace summer tops , Ross, and Marshalls.
@copperboom16366 жыл бұрын
It can also be really hard to thrift if you're plus-sized. Sometimes fast fashion is the only option for some folks. *shrugs*

Amen, sista! I have a collection of vintage bags, hats, and accessories and use those with modern vintage-style pieces to create the look I want. Torrid has some incredible pieces in their summer inventory that look very vintage - Edwardian to 1960's. Check them out, and Old Navy with their summery gingham dresses and vintage prints. Happy hunting!

I second the suggestion to try a discount store like Marshalls! I'm always having to hold myself back when I go because they have so many cute clothes, and it's so easy for me to say, "it's only 15 bucks, why not?" Their home decor section is lit, too. Just saying 😂

morgoth lotr I thought fast fashion was more about poor quality and buying the new “trend” and throwing away stuff once it goes out of fashion. Kind of like disposable clothes. I see no issue in looking for deals. Sounds responsible actually as long as you get the use out of them/buy from a responsible maker.

Darling, those off the shoulder tops are so easy to make. if you can sew in a straight line, that's all you need to know. they are just two rectangles with some elastic drawn through the top. You could make a ton of them in fabrics that you like or to match an existing skirt or pair of pants.
@rachelmaksy6 жыл бұрын
I need to try it!! 😍
@cannibalcreep61806 жыл бұрын
The Pinup Companion all you need to do is stretch out one that you already have onto some paper (it could even be newspaper) and trace it out. It's that simple, i promise.
@whossoul6 жыл бұрын
You are totally right! Though this line of thinking is a slippery slope! A circle skirt is three straight side seams, sew on a waistband and zipper, hem it, and your done! Or instead of attaching a waistband, you can whip up a quick princess seam bodice and have a dress! It's really awesome being able to sew your own clothes, and sooner or later you realize that you can make pretty much anything you can find the materials for. Which is why the only reproduction things I buy anymore are novelty prints designed in house that I couldn't possibly get fabric for!
@StellaMariaGiulia6 жыл бұрын
I'm totally on board with this! I started sewing last month (lol) with expanding my "vintage" wardrobe in mind, along the line I'm hoping to buy a lot of vintage patterns, but right now I'm sewing a skirt!

Oh, I love the tan and olive stuff on you. If there’s one thing I think suits you at least as well as vintage, it’s the safari/adventurer look! All that’ll missing, is a prop rifle slung over your shoulder and some lions roaring in the background (I‘m looking at you, Frodo) 😁 I agree though, the high/low skirt doesn’t cut it. Especially without pockets!

@rachelmaksy6 жыл бұрын
Right?? I feel like it's always been a bit expensive even in my high school days womp womppp
@oeilletetetoile13566 жыл бұрын
Is it really expensive when we think about the labor and materials involved in manufacturing clothing? I would categorize Target’s clothes as fast fashion, and though the price may be high relative to how long they will last, I still think they are cheap in terms of using poorly-paid labor, low-quality details etc. I hate that this sounds hopelessly snobby, but it really does make me uncomfortable to see high consumption of fast fashion with little consideration of the environmental impact or human rights issues involved. It would be fair to say I am privileged because I can afford to spend more on clothes, but I honestly still limit how much I buy. I enjoy this channel and don’t want to criticize Rachel for having fun shopping and making a cute video with styling suggestions, but I wish the fast fashion issue would be addressed at some point. I realize, too, that some people do not have the budget for new clothes from higher-quality sources, but I have seen even my affluent friends buying exclusively fast fashion and looking for the cheapest sources of clothing in the past few years. I find this emphasis on price and quantity over quality to be unsustainable, and I have to admit that I would be disappointed to see a series focusing on hauls from fast fashion marketers.
@sonyafirefly38795 жыл бұрын
@@oeilletetetoile1356 That was very politely expressed. The thing about fast fashion, too, is that it's not actually cheaper, because the clothes fall apart. I mean, I guess if you're discovering your style it IS cheaper because your wardrobe will keep shifting, but if you know what you want and are looking for pieces you'll wear forever, department stores are not going to save you any money. I grew up without a lot of money, and almost all the clothes my mom got for my sister and I were from rummage sales, thrift stores, or hand-me-downs from other families. I think the only new clothes that we got were bras, underwear, and jeans. Because of this background, I don't like spending money on something that isn't going to last. I recently saw that Target had come out with a whole bunch of summer clothes with unfinished seams. As somebody who is teaching herself how to sew, this hurt my heart for artistic AND ethical reasons. It should be a crime to sell a half-linen, half-cotton dress with raw edges. I read an article once on how even American seamstresses are underpaid (paid by commission at too low a rate to make a decent hourly wage, since sewing takes so long). I have also heard that, for many single or poor women in third world countries, sewing is one of their best bets of survival. I wish that it was easier to get reliable information on the factory conditions that each brand of clothes are coming from.

I've found Target to be a great place to get cardigans! Year round they always have them, in a variety of colors that change through the seasons, and they usually have a few with cute lacey patterns in the spring/summer. Living on the west coast it never gets THAT cold, so cardigans are my stable through the fall and winter, and it's nice having an easily accessible source for them!

This is so cool! I technically dress vintage (the majority of my clothes are 80s-90s) and it's really interesting to see how seamlessly these pieces that look very modern by themselves can go into making an authentic looking outfit. I think pre-70s fashion can seem very intimidating because of the disconnect our culture has because of how much time has passed (not to mention the majority of thrift store clothing is 70s-00s)

Hey former target employee here! If you really want to get things for cheap, get friendly with your local target price change member if they still have employees dedicated for that job, i know it varies from location to location. Another thing is that every week the prices goes down for different sections on different days! Womens/young ladies are usually on mondays, kids/infants on tuesday, Wednesday i think is shoes, thursday intimates and friday mens! (Sorry if i got it wrong, idk if its a different schedule for different locations) also don't be afraid to ask an employee to double check the clearance price, it may be lower than what is tagged since it goes down like 15%, 30%, 50%, 70%, and finally 80% if i remember correctly. Also the target app is a good way to see what they have for clearance so you can have a clear idea what's being clearanced out before wasting your time scouring the racks and you dont like anything lol. Hope this helps! -former price change target employee

I love this. I usually end up at thrift stores for vintage inspired/modern vintage. That polka dot dress though I love. Okay any skirt or dress with pockets I love.

Same here! It's a lot easier to find pieces at those types of stores for sure! Me too!

The Pinup Companion I have a bit of hard time, only cause I'm short and plus size but I can make it work lol

I really enjoyed this video! I wouldn't have guessed the items as they're displayed in the store could look vintage, but when you style them into a full outfit they definitely do -- and they look SO CUTE! Love it! It'd be really cool to see a thrift store haul (not sure if you've done this already, haven't seen all of the videos yet. :) )

Ooh I loved this challenge! I’m still building my closet up so this helps because I’m scared to buy true vintage I mean i spill a lot! However, are we ever getting a closet tour from you? I’d love to see how you store your clothes and how green it...I mean how full it is. Give Frodo a smoosh and a kiss from me xx

Great video - this series will be an eye-opener for us British gals. I've never shopped at Target when I've visited the US. The film "Wild Child" had me thinking it was a budget store 😃

I have a heap of those off the shoulder top and never thought about wearing them with a knee length skirt I tend to wear them in a more 60s/ 70s hippy style but omg they looked awesome how you did it and I'm so going to have to find some knee length skirts to wear with them.

Everything was really cute. I totally agree with you on the high low green skirt. That one didn’t really work..even for a modern look.

The best item I found at Target was 2 weeks ago. I got a floral embroidered denim jacket for $18! But other days their prices steer me away lol but this is such a good haul you got sooo many cute pieces!
