have you ever wondered why certain years we're drawn to higher shoes than others? well, what if it had to do with the economy? there have been many discussions about the height of women's shoes and how it correlates to the state of the economy. in today's video i look at a century's worth of fashion trends to see if that seems to be the case. and spoiler: the answer seems to be yes! after a period of hardship we tend to go the other direction and dress luxuriously, and what better way to do that by wearing absurdly high heels?

Maybe this escapism is why 60s and early 70s fashion trends are coming back. It was a time with a lot of color and experimental styles and fashion icons. It also lines up with times of civil unrest and a powerful youth culture, so maybe.

Dude, there is gonna be such a fashion boom after corona. That last comment about wanting to dress to the nines to get a coffee is so true. I find myself dressing really nice every time I go out now compared to when i used to

I’d never noticed this but it makes since! I think it coincides with the “lipstick effect” where, in times of hardship, purchasing of small luxury items like lipstick or other cosmetics go up as a way for people to treat themselves without breaking the bank on larger, more impractical purchases

When you mentioned “the need for escapism”, it immediately rang a bell for me. Yeah, I’m a boots and flat girl but lately I’ve wanted to make statements at any point I’m remotely going out.

There's actually also a correlation between the economy and lipstick shades. The worse it gets, the more vibrant are the colours.

I fear anyone who can do anything in heels. They wield power.

Well, that explains why platforms are such a staple of argentina's street wear. We are always on crisis.

Lol. Lately I'm either wearing pajamas all day or dressing in a very extravagant way to get some groceries.

Fun fact : 70s trends were actually inspired by the 30s. E.g. Jumpsuits, high heels, big sleeves etc were present in the 30s.

Man I love the idea of fashion as escapism. I think most of us do it without even realising, like ‘dressing for the job’. This was really interesting and I too am ready to wear my towering heals to 7/11 💀

This is interesting! I live in Australia (which has been fairly covid-free since mid-2020) and our lives are getting back to normal. I have noticed that whenever my friends and I go on a night out, we now dress to the absolute 9s and will often message each other in the lead up saying something like "gals, heels are a MUST". We now go out to clubs and bars in full on heels and wear crazy sparkly outfits, which we didn't do prior to 2020, or would only do on special occasions. This is 1000000% linked to covid - every time we go out now feels like a special occasion and a chance to show off those insanely impractical outfits! (So, for people still in covid-impacted countries, get excited to whip out those 6-inch platforms!)

We have to also note the fact that pandemic also pushed people to embrace old grandma hobbies like knitting, sewing, crocheting and making their own clothes . Such a cost effective way. And so many people started their small business they always dreamt of.

i think the 2020's are going to be really interesting after the pandemic. Fashion has been changing since 2018 to the 2000's era trend, and with covid, people want to dress to their best! I already noticed it after the first lockdown, people were getting their best clothes just to go to the mall or to family dinner. It will be nice to see what this new 2000's post pandemic will look like
