Judy Garland is THE definitive Dorothy, and convinces as a young preteen girl, despite being 16 at the time. It's sad to think of her tragic life, how she was forced into show business with her sisters at a young age, and dealt with substance abuse, before passing away at the young age of 47 years old.

This is probably because it was originally an allegory for the movement to base the US dollar on silver (the shoes) instead of gold (the Yellow Brick Road). That's why it's the land of "Oz" (short for "ounce").

Judy Garland as Dorothy was what first introduced me to musicals. Over the Rainbow is still to this day my favorite song of all time. With all the pressure she was put under by MGM to fit the mold for this movie at just 16 years old, she gave one of the greatest performances not just of her career, but in film history period. There will never be another like her. 🌈☁
@LaBellesGraceКүн бұрын
The Wizard of Oz was always intended to be Judy Garland’s big break into a leading lady. The only reason why talks about Temple came about was because the stinky higher ups were worried with the amount of money they already spent to get the rights, and for everything yet to come, that new comer Judy wouldn’t be enough to draw out the box office. Judy was fought for by the crew, and the role was 100% hers from that point. Love this ranking! ‘39 Dorothy absolutely deserves the crown, and Disney Return to Oz is so underrated.

Dorothy Gale is literally one of fiction's greatest heroes. She's still managed to keep her good heart in spite of everything she's been through, and that is really admirable. In my opinion, Dorothy is one of pop culture's most famous female paragon heroines. 11/10 video. Keep up the good work. 😁👍🏾😁👍🏾😁👍🏾 Side note: From everything I've seen and read, including watching the whole movie, Journey Back To Oz is the true sequel to the OG '39 classic. Why? 4 things. 1. Obviously, the casting of Judy Garland's daughter, Liza Minnelli, as Dorothy, was, in my humble opinion, meant to evoke the exact same version of the character her mother is famous for. 2. Dorothy's song at the beginning of the movie, "A Faraway Land," is basically that movie's version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." Not only that, but if you listen closely as Dorothy sings, you can tell that Liza did her best to channel her mother's vocal prowess she had as Dorothy. 3. Not only is a tornado the same way Dorothy gets to Oz, but she literally gets KNOCKED UNCONCIOUS before she and Toto go to Oz. In both movies, a piece of furniture (a windowpane in the original 1939 film, a fence door in Journey Back To Oz) is blown onto poor Dorothy's head by the twister's winds, knocking her unconscious. 4, At the end of the movie, after Dorothy is sent home, she's shown WAKING UP at the fence and running back to the farm, happy to be home again, *proving* that the *entire adventure* was a DREAM just as it was in the OG film. Journey Back To Oz is the underrated true sequel to the 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz. These are all just my thoughts and opinions, but I would love to hear yours as well as anyone else's perspective on this subject of continuity between the two films. Just be sure to stay kind and respectful in your replies. God bless y'all! 😊🥰👍🏾❤️ Final note: Judy Garland's the DEFINITIVE Dorothy. She made the character an iconic heroine for generations to enjoy and look up to, and we love her for it. Rest in peace, Judy. We'll take care of Oz for you with our own ruby slippers. Tyrants look out and wicked witches beware! 🌪👠👠

I love Return to OZ (1985) and personally think Fairuza Balk is the most acute in casting, not just age but of personality, of Dorothy Gale. I love that the dark fantasy movement allowed the film to lean into the weird, even surrealist, aspects of Baum's books. The Gnome king, wheelers, and Mombi terrified me as a child. Dorothy helping Ozma from the mirror is still one of my favorite scenes in film.

47:10 For me, I'd love to see a movie or series that focuses on the witches of Oz. And I don't mean "Wicked". I mean a movie/series that gets into the nitty-gritty of *all* of the witches, not just the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda. The closest we've gotten to what I'm wanting was "Oz: The Great and Powerful" which I personally think is under appreciated. But I want info on the Witch of the North who, despite arguably being the weakest of the witches, placed a powerful protection spell on Dorothy in the books. I want info on the Witch of the East. I want to know if witches are born with magic or obtain it in later in life. How does a witch become ruler of one of the four lands of Oz? Stuff like that.
