I have a method that worked absolutely WONDERS for me. I've primarily fired from irons and high power scopes but as of recent got really into hand guns with the use of compact red dots. I was having a hell of a time getting my alignment right, especially when from holster or low ready.... This method is primarily beneficial for those that want to find that dot as quickly as possible from holster or low ready but can easily be worked into realignment through recoil.... It's going to sound silly but first make sure the gun is clear and ammunition in a separate room... Next find a room in the house that's as close to pitch black as possible with enough room for yourself to draw uninhibited. Now, just simply work on your draw / low ready to ready. The more pitch black the room is the better. This helps with muscle memory especially but don't cheat! If when you bring the pistol into the ready position you can't see your dot, don't use your wrists to fish around trying to find the dot, just simply reset and try again! You of course don't want to start this process without already having enough muscle memory to know how you should feel when just doing irons at the range. This way you can quickly incorporate your current into the ready comfortably into this new practice without developing any new bad habits. For me when I first started it was kind of frustrating because I was having a hell of a time finding the dot but I would fish around with my wrists after already having the gun in ready position at eye level. Once I cut that out it only took a few more resets and then I was finding it almost each and every time since I cut out the bad habit with the wrists. Once you are almost 100% consistently getting that dot found on each draw you then take a few minute break to relax and then repeat with the lights on. I know it sounds silly but honestly it doesn't take too much practice. Once you can consistently get it down in the dark you're already developing proper muscle memory that becomes natural when incorporating the practice from dark to light. Hope this helps someone out there that might be thinking red dots might not be for them because of repeated frustration. It certainly helped me immensely!

Very Solid - I think the biggest worry in transitioning to the RMR on a pistol is losing speed from draw to first shot because you miss the dot. Thanks for a great lesson!
@Marty480343 жыл бұрын
This was great. I did great from low/high ready. No issues. From the draw, my dot was consistently left. It showed my something about my grip. I wasn't getting my grip fingers all the way around the the grip. Very illuminating. Practice is key!! Well. done. (I should get one of those handguns with the "grip zone". That would cure all!)

I am very new to reddit sight and watched one of your videos on finding your dot. It was very informative and many good techniques. The best one for me was presenting the gun with the front slightly proud to see the front sight and as I push out I squeeze my grip pinky and the dot drops right into the window as the firearm levels out. Thank you!

I find that the thumb on my support hand REALLY helps me with acquiring sight of the dot. When I focus on pointing that thumb toward the target, I'm using my body to naturally line up the barrel with the target, and so the dot shows up more consistently since the gun is fairly well aligned already. My support thumb is being used as a natural indexing point for aiming. I'm a little surprised that I haven't heard this tip before anywhere; I had to figure it out on my own. Trainers I've seen tend to just say "practice over and over" and refer to natural hand-eye coordination rather than something specifically helpful. Though maybe I'm missing something; I'm no expert.
@Shinobi1Kenobi2 жыл бұрын
If no one taught you to point your support hand (lead) thumb at the target, then 1 of 2 things happened. Option A is you are self-taught. Option B is you were not well-coached. Glad you figured it out! Good job.

I would like to see dynamic movement with red dot pistols. In an ideal situation (range, home, IG vids) you can use your choreographed draw such as this video. But in dynamic situations where you may have to reposition yourself quickly and draw, I personally find a big front dot (iron) easier.

I've got odd hands, in that I have bigger than average hand/palms, but shorter thicker fingers. For me to see the dot on my G19 I have to hit the perfect grip, where as on my G17 I can see it even if my initial grip is a bit off. I have the issue with my G19 as the grip is a bit too short and the bottom of my hand/pinky hangs off the grip. I've found that my draw is faster and more consistent with my G17 as well.

I was always told by my instructors, "Practice does not make perfect -- practice makes !permanent!... "Perfect" practice (perfect repetition) makes "perfect". They also cited some study that found that !most! people need 2000 to 3000 repetitions to build muscle memory initially and at least 1000 repetitions weekly to maintain it (to whatever degree of perfection that person settled on). For activity requiring fine motor skill (aiming, trigger control), the muscle memory is perishable and begins degrading almost immediately. The good news is that once learned, it is easier to regain proficiency with less repetitive practice by simply returning to maintenance mode training. This info was current back in the mid 80's. No idea what the current state of affairs is nowadays.

If the dot is on target when he presses the trigger, it's not because he lined it up on the target. He's only using it to confirm afterwards that be was on target, and is relying on his practice/muscle memory to be on target when he draws.
