The RetroTINK 5x Pro is a brand new upscaler that boasts output resolutions up to 1440p, offers best in class deinterlacing and hosts many different inputs for all your retro needs - but is it any good? Will it replace the OSSC ? In this episode I give you my thoughts and full review.

Appreciate the honesty here. In regards to the shortcomings mentioned (1080i, 50 Hz) I wouldn't be surprised if a firmware update comes out in the near future to remedy those. All of the RetroTINK products get pretty nice firmware update support from what I see, so maybe a few updates in I'll grab one of these. I've owned a Framemeister for a few years, so at the moment I'm not needing an upscaler upgrade.

The fact there is a solution to the HDMI dropout during Res switches is a big deal for me but its still not a Full replacement for my OSSC+Frameister setup sadly Definitely the way to go now for people just starting to get old systems up and running on new tvs though.

The reason the RT5X isn't working with your PS2 at 1080i is because the PS2 switches its RGB output from RGBS to RGsB (sync-on-green) at 480p and higher, and the RT5X does not support sync-on-green over SCART. As far as the RT5X is concerned, the sync signal just disappeared. That's why Mike suggested using component cables, because the PS2 outputs the same type of sync signal over component for all resolutions. Another solution is using a device that separates sync-on-green, such as the recent gscart switches.

Hi - great review. Just to flag, the PS2’s higher resolutions didn’t work over SCART as the 5X can’t support RGsB over SCART. (It only does RGBs.) The only way you’ll get the higher resolutions is to use 1) a Component cable or 2) the SCART cable via a GSCART which will convert the RGsB to RGBs.

Let's just hope Mike reacts to that. As a PAL user myself I'm having issues with the RT5X - from what I can tell it doesn't support 5x scaling for 288p signals (which would result in 1440p). It also doesn't support 1080p underscan with PAL signals. Right now I can't recommend it for PAL users.

A quick note about the slight difference in noise you demonstrated in the Neo Geo capture: it looks like your OSSC is in generic mode as the output looks significantly softer than the 5X in that example, which I believe is masking a lot of the noise. I would wager that if you set up optimal phase for the Neo Geo, the noise levels would look almost identical to what you see coming through the 5X

The single greatest thing about the RT5X is that MikeChi is communicative and committed to making the 5X be awesome for everybody. I'm 100% certain there'll be firmware fixes for the PAL issues. While some sections of the retro gaming community are content to navel-gaze over cables and arcane settings, Mike has a "Just Play The Damn Game" approach, and RT5X definitely lives up to that mantra. I expect we'll see great things in the near future. Another big feature that you didn't mention is that the RT5X is supposed to output standards-compliant resolutions and timings on the HDMI port, so the compatibility with TVs and most capture cards should be much higher than OSSC.

If it was just the OSSC vs RT5 the RT5 wins hands down for versatility and deinterlacing but for us that have BOTH it is a hard ass sell for a sidegrade the next retrotink will most likely sell to us as a major upgrade. and even then i have a feeling the need for linedoubling alone is gonna stay for the ossc. As it is the res switching is a MAJOR deal for us but with the amount of money placed into our setup already it makes it feel the need to have a bit more to justify the buy and with the lack of the HDMI in for the digital adapter we have for a few consoles it cant replace our Frameister yet. The way most people have their consoles right now is↓ Console RGB/COMP/Digital HDMI mod IE GCHD Eon/Xbox Chimeric HDMI>OSSC for LineDouble>Framiester for HDMI cleanup(alot of tvs suck at seeing nonstandard res or timings)>TV OR Console>Composite/Svid/Scart RGB or COMP Interlaced and progressive>Framemeister for Scaling The RetroTink 5x can handle the Second one Handily but falls to the purely digital out we have on more of the not quite retro systems.

@railsrust

The previous RetroTink products had excellent 50Hz support, and I bet this does/will too. One thing to keep in mind is that the Amiga supports really weird resolutions that Mike Chi probably wasn't expect 99% of people to be using it with. Maybe keep an eye on what the firmware looks like? You also should see if anyone else running PAL content is running into these issues, or if it's mostly just the Amiga.

Use component. Drop SCART.
@cius96
@cius96 Жыл бұрын
@@chimnino well in Europe SCART was the big thing (expecially with TVs... every TV had SCART imputs until 4k TVs). Component cables were basically never considered here, since (if one disliked the inferior composite cables provided with many game consoles) RGB through SCART was the best solution possible. I think you know that SCART (I mean RGB) and composite cables (or better said YPbPr) basically output the same quality, with the SCART being slighty better if ay all. Therefore your suggestion is wrong (and would only apply for US citizens). You know, not everyone lives in the US

USPS says mine is at the post office so it will likely come today. It's replacing my Framemeister which I'm going to sell on eBay (likely for more than I paid for the 5X). I only need it to work with NTSC so this is basically a perfect replacement. As nice as Firebrand X's profiles are, it's annoying to have to load them each time I play a new console on the Framemeister. Plus this isn't going to have the sync issues I get from certain Saturn games and the deinterlacing looks superb. Only downside is the SCART cable is backwards so I had to order a weird one with a right angle connector from Amazon UK.

I hope you'll get some composite and/or component video cables for your PS2 for a future video to see how that looks. I have some 50Hz PAL consoles which I was hoping to run through this via composite, until I can get RGB out of them. It appears like that wouldn't have worked anyway, for now at least. That is a shame. Still, great review and great product too.

@yuribacon

Well, I think the thing is that lots of videophile retro gamers in the US have "taken" SCART as a common and de facto standard way of using RGB signals from consoles, since the US never had a consumer RGB standard of its own, so when you spend all your time thinking about SCART as a way of using RGB video, I can see how its easy to forget about foreign video standards (or how its not just an RGB standard).

Is the 1080i mode even worth using in Gran Turismo 4/Tourist Trophy? I thought it rendered at the same resolution internally for all modes (512x448) and just upscaled it for the output. You're better off using 480p since there's no deinterlacing needed. 1080i support was probably added for projectors that supported 1080i but not 480p.
@shortcat
@shortcat 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know if someone did a comprehensive research, it may be a slightly different resolution like 540 vertically. In that case 480p or 1080i could look a bit better depending on your gear I guess but not a huge difference for sure.
@khuntington

yeah, bob at retrorgb said that there's no reason ever to choose 1080i over 720p. with that is force GT into 720p mode.
@shortcat
@shortcat 3 жыл бұрын
So i did a quick test and 1080i is better indeed because it uses the same technique usually used in 480i on ps2: objects that aren't moving much receive analogue 2x vertical antialiasing of sorts since alternating fields is rendered at different positions. You can clearly see how this works this by comparing a screenshot to the live picture.
