MAN the Jakk's Pacific Plug N' Plays were better than they had any right to be! The Plug N' Plays they have out now are all just single NES games on a chip and cost the same amount. We DO have cheap mini-arcade machines now but most of those are NES on a Chip with only a few utterly fascinating exceptions (namely the Tiny Arcades which have custom ultra low-res versions of the games which vary wildly in quality). Thanks for covering this as I had no idea the amount of work that went into this and Digital Eclipse just gained some respect points from me (CRIPES they have been around for a LONG time).

10:40 Lol, did you accidentally say it was running on an ARM SoC?
@TheBeeshSpweesh3 жыл бұрын
@@ModernVintageGamer The u'nSP architecture in the PnP is not even remotely close to being compatible with ARM. It's a 16-bit processor that can't even address 8-bit bytes. Each byte of an 8-bit data string has to be padded to 16-bit, or unpacked using shifting and masking. Manipulating work memory byte-wise is costly too, just as manipulating 4-bit nibbles is not all that easy on the 68K and 65816 processors the Genesis and SNES consoles used.
@MESSDrivers3 жыл бұрын
@@ModernVintageGamer MAME dev here, and u'N'SP has nothing to do with ARM. It's a 16-bit custom architecture that's very common in these plug-and-plays.

Wow this takes me back. I remember buying this back when I was a young teen right before a road trip to florida. My mom had a TV on the back of one of the seats and I played this for hours in the car.

anyone who has the thing care to elaborate on d-pad of the controller? and the button layout seems cool! does it work ok?
@RetroPillowcase3 жыл бұрын
It’s a bad dpad. That layout is the original arcade layout

I was fascinated by arcade ports growing up and MK was a big one. I bought every version that came out hoping to get a near-arcade perfect port. I eventually settled on the DOS version CD release. I had no idea about this one and it's impressive.

Briefly heard about this device before but it was great to see a deep dive into the background and inner workings. Another great MVG review. Absolutely love the level these technical looks are pitched, not too deep for us mere mortals but deep enough to share some of the magic that makes these things special and worthy of credit. 👊😎

That's crazy. You must have been working on this around the same time as Patman. Good stuff as usual.

The best part was that it came with a booklet with character bios and most importantly, fatality codes. This was a huge deal when internet access was a luxury.

100% played that version. Got it as a Christmas present I think. Surprisingly playable.

I played this thing about 10-15 years ago at a friend’s house. I was terribly disappointed that it wasn’t actually an accurate arcade port, but it was intriguing, and fun nonetheless. Thanks MVG for this little nugget for those that didn’t know about it.

I learned MK on this thing, and it's actually still my go to when I wanna play a few quick rounds.

I had this plug and play when I was a kid and I thought it was just an emulation box. Fascinating to find out that it was converted by hand.

That is, indeed, a very clever device. I remember playing this at a Best Buy when it first came out. It was obvious something was off, but I just chalked that up to the kind of charm the older ports had. I had no idea it was built off of the original source code.

So interesting! I remember seeing that MK Jakks controller in the store, seeing the screen shots on the blisterbox and thinking that's not the arcade rom or any of the console releases...and now I know why!

Super cool! I always thought this was the Genesis version or a similar console port. This programmer deserves serious props!

Also in this version the shadow effect each fighter casts on the floor. (That move in tandem with the fighters movements) are absent from gameplay.. This was a great upload very interesting to hear all the nuances of creating this port..

Its amazing the amount of work that goes into stuff that could be considered bargain bin like this. Pure greatness in a plastic shell. A significantly greater Milestone than my "RPi Zero in a SNES Controller" I made for a friend... I sometimes wish I had the capacity to forge great works like this.
