As a woman, the part about male body dysmorphia and body images issues from the male perspective was so interesting but at the same time so sad. I got choked up when Will spoke about his struggles with eating disorders , so many men go through this but as society we assume men don’t experience the same struggles as women.
@MichaelBrown-wx6zq2 ай бұрын
It's hard with men, because youre also not supposed to complain or feel helpless. So when one does and opens up you want to give them double sympathy. But the hardest part is knowing the only thing you can do is tell them they are in the end the only one responsible and to not admit that is cowardice. Which is why goggins and peterson are the antidote. Two different ways of taking people along the journey to taking responisbility for all their flaws without toxic self talk.
@richardh83352 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's tough. Ever since I was a kid I've been judged for the shape/size I am. I've been the skinny kid, the heavy kid, the muscular guy (and the skinny guy) depending on what phase of life I'm in. I prefer being muscular because it comes with a net benefit but often there's a negative component to that too (you're a dumb meathead, you must be obsessed with the gym, etc etc.) It's no different to how women are treated, but it concerns me greatly that male dysmorphia will eclipse female body dysmorphia in the next 2 decades. As the other reply stated, as men, we aren't supposed to talk about our struggles and are taught to just 'suck it up.'

I needed to hear that, perfect timing. I turned my life around 3 years ago. I broke up with my fiancee who didn't want children anymore, lost 30kilos (~60 pounds), gained muscle, changed job with a promotion, started dancing. It's a net improvement of my life in almost every aspects but the one that really matter. It still feels so alone to go through all of it. Almost unbearable, I feel exhausted. Tonight I was feeling down and i just resume the podcast on the conversation about how uncertain it can be, and the fact that it takes time to turn things around. Well I just needed to say thank you. Will is such a great inspiration. It's so damaging to be overweight as a child. I had minimal guidance on health, fitness, and nutrition as a kid. As a result I became overweight and was made fun of as a young teen. Literally for eating what my parents put out in front of me - what they were taught was normal food (frozen dinners, processed snacks). Queue the body dysmorphia, fear of interacting with peers, awful self confidence, eating disorders, drastic diet changes, and at the end of the day, general self-hatred. We need more positive guidance like him. I feel so sad for that young version of myself and others.

To anyone struggling: I just wanna let you know that you are absolutely not alone. Your worth is not defined by how you or your body looks like. Even if you are a man, your feelings are ALWAYS valid, so it’s definitely okay to ask for help. It doesn’t have to be a professional if you dont want to (though i really recommend it) but any type of support from a person who knows what you’re struggling with, is already a big step to success. getting rid of body dysmorphia is actually way harder than people might think, and it definitely does NOT go away even once you reach your goal physique like you prolly thought it would. Thats why i deeply recommend you to find someone you can trust enough to talk to about your struggles, who can support you on your healing journey and help you the best they can. Your mental health matters way more than you might think❤️🙏🏻 And also, to anyone who has any type of goals set for themselves, i absolutely believe one day you’ll absolutely get there. Work hard, never give up💪🏻 you’re gonna have your ups and downs during your journey, but dont let them stop you from succeeding. Ever❤️❤️ Now i havent listened to this video fully yet so i dunno if theyre gonna talk about the same things as i did but i just wanted to speak up my mind 😁

Yeah I had a similar thing. Blew up to 318lbs in HS and College. Playing D1 football. Miserable the whole time. Got injured and went the other way and got down to like 165lbs(not healthy). Started caring more and maintained 225lbs for years. Now 3 kids in 3 years I'm up at 275lbs again. It's been a roller coaster for sure.

Thank you for doing this. I’m not sure how your channel popped up in my recommendations, but I’m so glad it did: I think this interview is candid and thoughtful, and addresses matters I have wanted to see spoken about intelligently for a long time. It’s honestly helpful and cathartic

Their conversation about "the lonely chapter" hit me hard. This is 100% perfectly explained. I have never been able to find a coherent way to explain what is going on in my life ( even to myself) but THIS is it. I feel so much better and less alone, knowing that I am not alone in this period of uncertainty.

I'm trying NOT to be offended by the concept that you have repeated twice now (27:14 mark) 'that a woman's primary source of value is her beauty and her youth'.... Seriously??? and people wonder why the term 'body dysmorphia' has sprung up? So, at 67 and definitely not youthful, and very possibly not considered 'beautiful', except by my granddaughters and brand new GREAT grandson, are you saying that I have no Value??? I came to watch because I really enjoy Will's videos, but I am not sure that I can continue listening to this line of thought.

This one hits. Started following Will last summer and he was a huge inspiration in getting me back in the gym. He made videos that made fitness fun again. He also isn’t roided out meathead, so seeing something obtainable was very reassuring. Hearing his struggles hit home, as I have dealt with a lot of similar issues. Great show and conversation. Subscribed and will be back for more. Love the channel.

Thank you for explaining the "lonely chapter"! This is exactly what I'm going through right now. I had no idea there was a term for it. I like my friends, and I think they're genuinely good people, but they'll say things I wildly disagree with now, and I don't speak up because I fear I'd be shamed or even shunned. If the conversations tend to get too political I just stay quiet or I ask questions so the spotlight doesn't shine on me. I feel like a double agent.

Yes Chris love that this is a channel that focuses on men ‘stuff’, but learn more about women. That statement about women’s value in the world is youth and beauty, not helpful to young women.
@BestLifeMD2 ай бұрын
Yes, that shocked me.
@SuperGigiiАй бұрын
and then after perpetuating that frame of thought they complain alot of women nowadays lack substance 🙄
@TheNomadduxАй бұрын
It's a purposefully reductive statement OBVIOUSLY there is more to women than that but you could say the same thing about men by saying men's value to the world is PRIMARILY strength and protection, no matter how sophisticated we become as a species we can not escape our baser biological imperatives especially around mating, think critically and dont be so reactive.

I completely get what you meant with the lonely chapter. I had a 2 year period where I was working on myself. I was working out, went back to school (online), meditating, etc. I couldn't relate to any of my old friends but I didn't know how to find new friends so I just had no friends for almost 2 years. It was extremely depressing and isolating. I wasn't sure if I was gonna get through it. I decided to leave my hometown about 7 months ago and now I'm finding my tribe. I've found a good group of friends and I'm meeting new people everyday and I'm just in a much better place now. Having that support system makes everything so much easier. That was such a dark period of my life but it was all a part of my journey.

the mysoginistic biases of the interviewer made this a bit harder to watch as a woman. I don't want to be "annoying" please bear with me. I believe Will has a higher percentage of female audience because of how great he is and his understanding and respect for women he has. He doesn't explicitly talk about it but you can feel it in his content. This is not the case for a big amount of the fitness industry men and it shows. Chris didn't say many super bad things but you could see he hasn't thought about his biases much. He said twice that the value of women in the world is only their beauty and youth (not that the current system values beauty and youth in women over the rest of their qualities but that IT IS their value) Then when Will said social media is a real job, that challenged his idea that the content that women make in social media cannot be a real job because it sounds stupid to him. IMO a girl posting about her coffee as unnecessary as it seems to me if it makes her money and is scheduled it is as much as a job as other fitness men planning and recording sometimes also stupid content. this is not hate just a reflection

Yeah what was up with that comment? I don’t follow this dude but I like will. I am actually shocked someone would say that in this day and age that women’s value is their beauty? Wtf?

The misoginy is seeping through real rich in this video. It's horrible to watch guys like these have a platform to preach their toxicity to younger men in 2024.
@canererbay88422 ай бұрын
I'm not necessarily advocating for the opinions but you're missing a lot of the actual points here. 1) He said "primary" value and not "only" value. That's a big difference. And it's from an evolutionary perspective and at the worldwide population scale. That's not an overlooked bias, either. Rather, agree with it or not, they are thought-through opinions. You can check out his 2 episodes with Louise Perry. That's over 3 hours of conversation in total. 2) Value is inherently something that's determined by the surroundings of a thing. The thing can't simply dictate its value. You can't put a price tag on some object and call it its value unless you're actually able to sell it for that price. So the thing about the "system valuing something in women but the actual value being another thing" doesn't work in real life. 3) The "girl doing never-ending vlogs" is actually a perfect example on his comments about the beauty and the youth. There are endless pieces of content just on the internet that gets unbelievable attention just because there is a young and pretty girl in it. And then there are real-life examples of how much youth and beauty is valued all over the world in all kinds of social interactions. Granted it applies to both women and men but it's much more dominant for women.

The piece about spreading your identity over more aspects of your life so you feel less fragile when your soul focus thing isn't going so well really helped. Makes lots of sense.
