Modified cheap $3 speaker - Awesome sound quality

I made remake of the $ 3 speaker.
I attached it to an enclosure made by hollowing out wood.
The type of enclosure is backload horn.
【Sound quality】
I could hear the bass while the sound path was as short as 80 cm.
Wood utilizes laminated rubber of rubber available at a relatively inexpensive price.
It is harder than the MDF board, so the sound sharped.
Although the enclosure manufactured with MDF was a feeling of being caught, the sound has become more vigorous by using rubber laminated wood.
【Design of enclosure】
Enclosure designed with spreading constant 1.2
The throat cross section is 10 cm ^ 2
The length of the conduit is about 80 cm.
The sound path is optimized to match the calculated value as much as possible.
【Production】
The enclosure we made this time can be produced with trimmer and saw blade (using band saw for animation), drilling.

A most excellent project! I used to work in a audiophile store many years ago, and this is the type of product that was often sold. If I may make just two suggestions. The first is when preparing the channel for the wire run, to use a flexible plastic tube so that if the wire ever needed to be replaced it could be done easily. Second, before gluing the halves together, oil the acoustic chambers so that the wood is protected on the inside as well as the outside of the cabinet from the effects of humidity. Other than that, it is an excellent project again!

Wow, I even heard a difference on my iPad speakers. I like how it amplified and carried the lower frequencies more, that’s missing from a lot of speakers. Nice tone from wood too, makes a difference to bass notes.

Except, it doesn't really show us sound quality. It might have made the driver more efficient and increased its SPL, but did it produce a flatter response curve? Louder does not mean better if you have to deal with a poor response curve. The video didn't even bother to show us the actual measurements. Just let us guess using whatever speaker setup we have at home, be it cheap laptop speakers, or a real home theater. I'm not saying its a hoax. Just that its a very poor demonstration and shows zero evidence to prove it was even worth the time to make the enclosures.

This is how Bose makes their waveguide etc. small speakers sound so good. I once built a similar folded horn enclosure in a prison furniture factory, turning a pair of 39$ koss headphones into decent sounding, room filling speakers. These would probably sound incredible with some full range speakers (such as the 5” speakers from Bose 901’s) inserted into them.

The most improvement is separation. You can clearly hear the low frequency sound clearly. This is with cheap $3 speaker. It'd be better with bigger and better speaker assuming the design still allows it to shine.

What about the people who can create things but don't quite see the point of spending the time and money to optimize trash when you could buy better for the same money? Personally, I would instead have bought better baseline speakers(just part sound comes from), dropped a couple of bucks on some premade audio amp boards & a usb cable, and then done the complex casing. If you're going to put that much effort into something, you should make it worthwhile. If I were to optimize trash, the goal is to keep it as cheap as possible with as little effort as necessary. So, same design, but like cardboard + hot glue and maybe some spraypaint. The thing with these type systems is they can make it louder, but usually the sound is a bit more hollow, which doesn't always convey well over the internet.

That’s a tline enclosure. It will literally make any speaker sound amazing. Even better if you model the tuning of the box using the ts parameters. Notice the size difference in the enclosure with its horn effect on the port.

Instead of putting the drill in reverse, try keeping it in forward and pulling out several times while spinning throughout the cut. The flutes are meant to act as an auger to pull out wood chips from the hole, so putting it in reverse sort of defeats the purpose. Even though it does feel easier, you're still putting more strain on the drill bit and will cause it to overheat or break sooner. Great project though, and really well executed with simple tools.

Hi,do you all know that actually he is making a (not sure if he knew though) "transmission line speaker" enclosure? Click on this topic on youtube. Its all about enhance (not quite enhances, but improves the lower frequency down further) from behind loudspeaker through the back of tunnel as the simulation of a long tube folded. But if he tried to recreate this process, he made mistake by redirecting the flow of the sound. Should have been all the way to the back and down (an L upside down 1st) instead of cut short not even halfway goes down 1st. The quality depends: on the driver, amplifier, music itself. This transmission line speakers really work! It was popular in 1980s. KEF was the best (it still is-England)

Impressive. Over 1.7 million views in about 30 days. What I learned from this video is that you can make CNC quality work with ordinary shop tools anyone can buy from Loews or Home Depot. The planing of how to make the box and craftsmanship is top notch. About the end result sound quality. It's not "Awesome". The speaker box's tuned path aids the low side of the mid-range. To me,, it's annoying. About 40 years ago I followed an article in an audiophile magazine on transmission line bass cabinets and built one with an 8 inch woofer. I did the math on how long the folded path needed to be to make the low bass better. Let's assume that little speaker had the drive to move the air needed for bass sound. To help "tune" it. You would need to make that box's sound path 6 feet long and that's rounding it off a bit.

definitely not a project for everybody either. You must own the tools, and have A LOT of time in your hands. After that, you end up with sound that could be topped by a different set of plastic speakers that still cost less than the materials for the box. But it is a fun project if you are into wood working.

I made in past three my own original big projects working down even to 18 Hz but I appreciate his work - most say it is too much work - I'd say it was piece of cake comparing to big driver. and sound is beautiful enough if one had set his requirements.to this kind. . . . .

Yes, you're right Halfey. He made it small to demonstrate his idea without the time and expense of scaling up to a more complex, costly and unmanageable size. I thought the build and it's scale was spot on as a demonstrative tool. 5 stars from me. Just imagine if it would scale up to an 8" full spectrum driver and covered with a cherry veneer. I admire your woodworking and I have learned something on that front. The most valuable thing we have in life is time. He just wasted x number of days doing something that is NOT cost effective. The sound quality is nicer, but really it is a complete waste of time.

Its still more productive than watching ytb videos like this. Plus doing projects like these always educates you further, especially if its a project he does with passion. Its just in the definition of what "a waste of time" actually is. I mean, you could define basicly everything as a waste of lifetime. Its up to everyone themselves what they do with their free time. And as a viewer, its just nice to see his passion to this project, and how much you can actually improve cheap as heck speakers. Ik the effort isnt worth it that much, but Im sure he enjoyed doing this.

Because the box doesn't really make it sound better. There's a noticeable delay in the low ends. The separation makes it so you can hear it a little more clearly but the sound quality is still poor. It doesn't compare at all to 1k+ speakers which normally have very specifically engineered boxes to get the most out of the drivers. It was a pretty cool woodworking project and looks pretty.

Great job ! Note: You should done oiling right before merging enclosure... Later after sanding outside another coat of oiling. :) Bonus:If you're looking for perfection, you should sanding and put some water over wood for about 15-30 minutes, sanding again, another water and finish sanding, then do final oiling.

He basically took the engine from a toyota corolla and put it into a Ferrari... so yea, it's faster around the track than the corolla since it has better handling, braking, tires, etc, but just imagine if you put a ferrari engine in a ferrari lol. He took garbage speakers and put them in a very high end box proving the box does improve the sound of a speaker. If he shelled out $100 on the speaker drivers then it'd sound like a $500 set of bookshelf speakers, if not better, potentially much better.
