+TheSmokingTire VTEC crossover can be moved to some degree, with additional tuning. With the factory tune, they designed these engines to run on premium fuel, but had to be sure they could survive on less octane. In addition, Honda has always been very committed to lower emissions. Much like the 2004 Honda Si and others, the tune held a good bit of midrange torque within it, in order to accommodate americans who don't comply with octane requirements. This all was stated at a seminar in which Hondata founders attended many years ago. So, specifically to your question, the VTEC crossover can be brought down, but there comes a point where it becomes counterproductive. VTEC allows the car to switch from one cam lobe profile to another. The VTEC lobes are larger in lift and duration, and cam overlap is altered. At too low of an rpm, the large lobe profile of VTEC would cause hydrocarbon counts to skyrocket, not to mention a net loss in tq. The lower profile lobes are optimized for better torque at lower rpm when port velocity is lower. So "keeping it on" all the time, would yield lesser performance in a street type scenario.
@DirtDude1174 жыл бұрын
Huh going back and now seeing your comment is interesting since I do watch your channel as well now. What can happen on these cars with the 06+ is you can run a FlashPro and get a Pro-tune done based off the Off-the-Shelf Toda tune. With the OEM cat you can get VTEC cam on by 4500rpm and gain tons of mid range while seeing little effect on emissions. It still passes testing even. This is a 20whp gain in mid range as well as not having VTEC kick in yo. With a high flow cat or test pipe (cat delete) for "off-road" cars you can drop it down to about 3800. With a Scavenger Header+exhaust you can get it down to 3200ish and it's EXTREMELY smooth when done correctly while having a smooth power gain that's so linear with a nice amount of torque as well.

I think I speak for a lot of your fans when I say I'm jealous of the amazing driving roads that Southern California has. Up here in Vancouver, BC, they're just not as abundant. Mostly because if there's a mountain with a city on one side, there's nothing but more mountains on the other side so no reason for a nice, windy road to go through them. It's disappointing sometimes to find a nice, windy, long section of mountain road on google maps only to go there and find out it's dirt...

The turn in response is worse because of rotational inertia. Wider wheels and tyres increase that. Larger diameter rims/wheels increase that squared. (And the more mass you shift from the centre to the outside of the wheel the worse it gets.) Because of inertia the wheels want to keep rotating and they want to keep rotating in the same direction as well. Lighter rims would give back some of that turn in response.

I'm not an engineer. But a function that changes the cam profile at 6,000 to give more power, Isn't it a fair question to ask why it doesn't change at 4,000? Or 3,0000?
@Robby94LS9 жыл бұрын
Wow, real cool that you respond! I really wasn't expecting that! LoL The way they optimize it is to try (key word LoL) to have optimized performance through the RPM range. Most engines with one cam profile and intake runner length are optimal in a small RPM range. It's like having 2 different engines in one. 3 or 4K RPM prob could be tuned to be alright, but what got me was "having it on all the time..." THAT would KILL what little low end TQ you have (or don't have) on a Honda! On another note, I subscribed not too long ago. I've really enjoyed the videos, it's AMAZING what some people have done to their cars!!
@austinshatzer9 жыл бұрын
There are OTS tunes available to have it kick in sooner, o lower rpm
@velocity26549 жыл бұрын
+TheSmokingTire They optimized the 2nd camshaft profile to generate big numbers for the top end. Engaging he big profile sooner would kill the mid-range performance more than it would help. If a new cam profile, optimized for midrange, could be installed it could do what you ask. But that would be at the expense of the top end that you currently have. I think the newer versions had a total of 3 cam profiles that the system would swap between, so that you could have a midrange bump too.

+maximus9401 no I meant what I said when I said Si. I would have gotten one to replace my Saturn SC2 when it died if I hadn't set my sights on another. That and the fact they don't make S2000s anymore so you'd have to go back and get an older model; gotta put a lot of work into it to update it. Where as if I got the two door Si, well it gives a more concurrent template to work with.

maximus9401 Simply put, I'm not. It's not a competition to me. I just wanted the GT86 instead. Simple as that. if I were to really compare, I'd do so with my Saturn SC2 because it was FWD. @willywillywillywillywilly9 жыл бұрын
Doesn't the vtec exist in this car so that the first cam profile gives more low end power and the second profile gives more high rev power (essentially just widening the usable power band)? Changing where it switches over without changing either of the actual profiles wouldn't give you much more power, right? The cam profile for when vtec turns on would take away power if it was used at low revs and vice versa. Right? Someone educate me please.
@MrTshoff9 жыл бұрын
+im Schwaggy Because the cam on those things is huge. Something like.712 degrees of lift on the vtec lobes I think. Even v8 guys dont take it that far but if you have vtec you can do that.

+MrTshoff OEM AP1 Cams Adv. duration: 295 / 309 Dur at 1mm: 247 / 243 Lift: 12.15mm / 11.1mm Lobe centerline: 98 deg ATDC / 100 deg BTDC Nowhere near .700 lift, more like .480 stock. Vtec is for drivability, emissions and fuel economy at lower rpm. If you had it engaged all the time you would have a very lopey idle, less torque below 3000rpms, and take a lot of fuel. Vtec must be set at the point to make the power curve as linear as possible, in a properly tuned setup you should not feel vtec and barely hear it come on, depending on many factors but mostly cam timing, it can be set as low as 4000 and as high as 6500rpms, it all depends on the setup.

vtec comes on so high in the rev range because if it came on during the federal test procedure, it would fail. ideal vtec engagement would be the intersection of the two power graphs between small and big cam profiles. if the big cam came on too soon, there would be a loss of torque. my favorite variable cam timing system. essentially two cams for two needs.

I always wondered if I'd prefer a square setup on my ap2 vs oem staggered. Does going square with a 245 or 255 tire necessitate a larger front sway?
@kamilwlodarczyk63379 жыл бұрын
It's doable without a bigger roll bar but it unbalances the car with loads of front grip. Most people that go square get a bigger front bar and unhook the rear bar. This balances the car back out and makes it still have tons of corner entry grip and also lots of corner exit grip which allows you to get on the throttle a lot sooner.

With my AP1 (6k VTEC, 9k redline) I find that 4-6k is an ideal range for around-town, so the 6k VTEC makes sense. Granted there's an extra 1000 rpm before redline in the AP1 and the gearing is different; not sure if the same would apply to the AP2.

Hey Matt, Curious, the latest comparison's made now is buy one of these instead of a new miata or BRZ/FRS twins. Would you agree that is the way to go?
@willyoueatmyshorts17 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised you haven't reviewed the AP1 S2000. The first 2 years are the most raw from factory and make for a different experience.

the front tires on ap2, are they not 215s in the front and 245 in the rear when stock?
@Crono9925 жыл бұрын
They are.
@z32luvr4 жыл бұрын
Yes but I run 255’s in the rear. You can also run 225’s up front

i believe the lower you have vtec set the more top end power you lose, so to have vtec engaged all the time might make it slower.
@jootsjd22449 жыл бұрын
How does that compare to the supercharged NB miata?
@Mmedina879 жыл бұрын
v-tec adjusts valve timing. it keeps the intake valves open a bit longer to allow more air to enter the cylinder during high rpm when the parts are moving faster to give you more power. you only want v-tec to engage when the intake valve is opening and closing so fast that the proper amount of air can't enter the cylinder. if the parts are moving slow enough like at around 3k rpm then there is no point to having v-tec engage.
@jddonegan9 жыл бұрын
You can make significant gains on a S200 by dropping vtec to around 3,500 rpm. You lose the sudden "kick" but the flatter powerband is much easier to manage and the car is quicker at all rpms.
@mr.v63929 жыл бұрын
you can have vtec engage at whatever rpm you want, as long as you have the proper fuel supply to correspond with the amount of air entering the combustion chambers when the vtec lobes are in use. the reason people lower the vtec operation is to always have it operating during gear changes for circuit racing. for example when you enter a hairpin turn at 2nd or 3rd gear, you would most likely be out of vtec range coming out of that corner. lowering it will keep you in vtec so you can have power and torque to pull out of corners faster, lowering lap times. but very bad on gas mileage and highway cruising.

tyre size seems a little bit on the wide side for this amount of power. Definitely put the tune on for more torque to compensate for the wider tyres. Then its perfect

Hi Matt, as a long time subscriber and 240sx enthusiast, I would love to hear your opinion of a nicely setup 240sx. Nothing crazy like a time attack rocket bunny quad turbo 3jz. Just a simple, clean example of a s13 or s14 with coilovers or a sr20. Thanks, and keep up the awesome vids!
@CodySnell_879 жыл бұрын
i would like to see a 240sx review too like a 300-400 hp s13 with nice suspension brakes and tires preferrably an rb25 swap or nissan motor not an ls or a v8

pretty rare to see a 240sx "grip" car. but yes i would love to see a review on a none drift setup s13/s14
@CodySnell_879 жыл бұрын
ive driven alot of cars and owned alot and a well built s13 seems like it would be very hard to beat especially for like a 10 grand budget you can build an insanely fast great handling race car lol id like to see a side by side test just of the handling of a s2000 and a s13 with coilovers and some other suspension parts i do think s2000 is a cool car i like them both

Awesome review! The S2K engine is a nice one that doesn't need to be tuned much to have a lot of fun! I just watched David's Death Trap S2K video (thatdudeinblue) the other week and man what a difference. Both amazing reviews. I love this road too, definitely want to drive there one day!

How the reliability of these (both engines) if kept stock? Expensive to maintain?
@TassieLorenzo9 жыл бұрын
+dbauernf Very reliable. Valve adjustments periodically. Good fresh oil. That's it. Same maintenance as any ordinary Honda engine. :)

OK having owned an s2000 for 5 years, the 6k vtec isnt as bad as you guys are describing. When you're actually hooning, that car should never be below 6k. It's an On or OFF car. If you wanna go , you gotta go all out lol. Lowering the vtec is the shit but 3800 wtf that is waay to low man. You're gonna be cracking vtec cruising on the highway. I wouldn't recommend going lower than 4.5k IMO. I know that at 80 the car is turning around 4.1k if I remember.
@StratusFearX9 жыл бұрын
If you have a DBW AP2 with the reflashable ECU the Hondata Flashpro has a VTEC window feature where VTEC engages both based on RPM and manifold air pressure. Flat out my VTEC engages at 3900, but in highway cruising it stays on the low cam because the MAP is low at part throttle. I have no idea if standalone ECUs can do that on the 05 and older cars.
@CrossWindsPat9 жыл бұрын
Wesley Bear Ohh wow thats fucking dope! Did not know you could do a smart tune like that! Well seeing as the older models still have a throttle positioning sensor ( I think) it shouldn't be an issue. Thats pretty sweet man.
@kamilwlodarczyk63377 жыл бұрын
ap2pat I got the car tuned on a Greddy EMU piggy back a while back and when there is more than 3/4 throttle or so, the second cams come on at 4000 rpm. When there is less throttle, its on the stock profile. So the short answer is yes, an '04 can have a throttle position sensitive tune. The car has been woken up with the tune but now with the HFC the exhaust is completely obnoxious. Makes me laugh every time it gets higher into the rev range.

I forgot he mentioned his hand was injured so i just lost it at the end with that handshake! Awesome review i would love to see you directly compare an ap1 and ap2 or to a CR if you find one. Even though you dont wanna drive anymore of them lmao
