Years later, Matt was right that he did not lose any money on that Laguna Blue S2000. In fact, it's worthy more today-- he got it for a steal in current times. Hope he is still driving it in good health, VTEc'ing all over California's Canyons.

Take it from a AP1 owner, skyhigh revs+ no tq make it a fun car and totally "racy" feeling, but totally civic-esc like in day to day driving scenarios. Thankfully nothing a simple downshift or two can't fix. My turbo'd friends (talking small ones that hit under 3k) have much more fun throughout their rpm range. I'll say it, boost is the ticket over small displacement, low cy count, NA builds for most situations.

@Commentor1 I considered it. I could have bought a c5 for under 10k with under 70k miles. However these are the reasons I didn't: Appreciation: Every car I have owned as a DD has gone up in price so much that I have always made a few grand (or more) when it came time to sell. I initially wanted an NSX but when I got the money together suddenly all It was only enough for an s2000. I got my AP1 from its second owner, with 35k miles, a few mods, and full service history for 14k. Now it sits at 70k miles and I could easily get 18k+ for it. Such wouldn't have been the case with a c5. Reasons being: Too many were made, demand is too low, and it's too connotated with being a boomer-mobile and/or a mid life crisis with four wheels. Connotation: As stated above the c5/c6 is waaaaay too connotated with being the car of a mid life crisis and/or being the most boomer sports car ever. This may not be the case in much of America, but it certainly is in my area. Handling: Even when the vette has it's leaf springs taken out and replaced with coils it still feels like a dog in corners. In order to get it setup for the twisties you have to install coilovers, replace the burgerland driver's seat, and reinforce the chassis with a multi point roll cage. Handling means a lot more to me than straight line speed as I have canyons and twisty roads all around my house and enjoy spirited driving through them. Plus I like going to an autocross every now and then. I still love the price/performance ratio a c5 offers, and often recommend them to people who ask me about affordable sports cars. Plus I'd like to have one in my group so I can have a go in it occasionally. However, every time I recommend one the person ends up going for a tuner instead. Usually a S2000 or Z3.

I bought mine with 33k miles four years ago for $18,500.00. I wanted a 2003 with 9000 rpm motor. (Suzuka blue and not with a premium like this.) It was 10/10 in all areas. Legit showroom. Love it. I just drove it today after working from home the last week and a half and was amazed at how amazing it is 😂 (even though I've owned it for four years.) I looked back at it as I locked the door bc it's nice and noticed I left the interior light on. Perks.

Amazing road Matt! As an S2K owner can tell you that I get more thumbs up in this car and anything else I have driven. Is easy to screw up the looks with juvenile aero mods and ugly Japanese tuner wheels. Keep to "tasteful upgrades" and the S2k will always look good.

Matt - One more box to check off... S2000 Club Racer (CR)....It was Uehara-San's (Honda Chief Engineer of the NSX and s2000) final project before reirement. The Club Racer is lighter (no soft top), has firmer springs and dampers, larger stabilizer bars, and hard topfrom the factory. Only 699 made; available in the US only. All clean examples continue to appreciate in value. If you can get your hands a club racer, your viewers here will appreciate it.

22.5 for a 24k mile AP2 in this condition is a good price for any color, at least in the northeast where I am. 4:15 RIP bug. I've had my daily AP1 since November, it's the best value for an exciting, light RWD car in stock form IMO. I get 32 highway, 23 city/spirited in mine during the summer. I got pulled over once on a backroad at 5:30am, although the cop didn't clock me. It's definitely "hard" to go slow on the backroads, the car just has so much to give. You can do 50-60 on a twisty 35mph road without even blinking. Weak points for me are the seats (the leather gets slick and the bolsters collapse), brakes could use a bit more bite as Matt said, and could use a bit of downforce (addressed in the CR).

Stas G. I've seen plenty of guys with slammed S2ks bumping EDM with their caps tilted slightly to the side. That's why it's so difficult to find a clean example, because those guys mess every damn car up with a K&N air filter and a cheap set of coilovers. Every car has a negative stigma about it; it just depends on which lens you choose to view it through.

Tyler Hoeve Basically the AP1 (99-03) had the F20C engine that redlined at 9,000. The AP2 (04-09) had the F22C1 engine that had more torque but a lower redline, also different wheels and front/rear bumpers, minor interior updates. The common consensus is AP1 makes a better track day car, AP2 is a better day to day car.

I don't know why people are allergic to modified used cars, if I found a clean example with simple bolt ons like an intake and a cat back exhaust it wouldn't stop me from buying it. Especially if the stock parts are included, or ppl could put it back to stock before selling it and sell their parts separately.

That's actually the reason I bought my Z. It was completely stock. And that usually goes to show that the car wasn't really abused, drifted, or tracked. +TheSleazysalmon Yup! and ppl spend a fortune fixing the "corners" cut by OEMs when they built the car using after market components yet in the long term mods dont add value and often are worth less than a stocker. thats life... best bet is to keep all the stock parts. return it back and then part out the stuff on forums or fleabay.

I understand the love for this car, I really do. It just never has done anything for me personally. Lack of personality I guess. But then again, never driven one, just was driven in one once. But mad respect for this guy laying down the cash for this machine.

Drive one and you'll get the appeal. A well sorted AP1 is about about $12k.
@ChaosphereIX

Michael Cohen I hear ya, I understand the appeal for it. Felt solid in the corners and very, very well balanced. Hated the engine note though. Just not a Honda fan, or JDM for that matter, honestly. Cold and not enough personality or soul. Again, the S2000 is an amazing car, no doubt. But I want to be tempted to give my car a name because of its quirks and traits...the Honda doesnt do that for me. Now the old 916 Alfa Spider V6 I drove a few years ago, THAT had me at first engine howl. I am a sucker for redhead Italians though! The Honda would for sure run rings around it, I know. Doesn't matter. Am I making sense? Sorry to ramble...

Matt, you're so right about this car not liking to drive slow. When I'm in the car with my friends I drive below chill and it's horrible. When I drive it normal, my friends scream for me to slow down "I got kids" and girls thinking I'm driving fast because an s2000 is louder than a F355 at wide open throttle.

While I understand that people say it's basically a better Miata, I think the Miata still has it's place - because in a Miata, you can just cruise around, whereas I feel the more agressive S2000 wants to be treated like a racecar, flat out all the time. But maybe that's just me. Oh and of course - price.
