Thanks again Bob for the pen and pencil set. I didn’t mean to make you so nervous while doing it. I just love ❤️ how the wood is the focal point of these pens. Also it’s hard to believe that it’s only a super glue finish because they are so shiny.

Hi Bob, A brilliant video with some extremely great tips for making modified Slimlines. They came out a beautiful pair and I'm sure Jack McCauley will cherish them for years to come. One thing I do differently, is that when I'm ready to apply the CA, on the pen blank, I rub a little beeswax on the "Loose" tube just in case any CA gets between the bushing and stick the loose tube to the blank. I then rub off the wax before final assembly. Thanks again Bob. Cheers, Huw

Pens look good. A couple suggestions take the bushings out and just mount the body between centers. This eliminates the possibility of metal dust from sanding getting into the wood. When finishing no chance of sticking the bushings in and also lets a little CA go over the end of the wood sealing it from any moisture when wet sanding later. A light touch up with 400 grit on a flat surface when finish and polishing is complete will remove any excess CA. For easier transmission installation get one installed exactly where you want it, now cut yourself a piece of wood to the length between the end of the transmission and the tip of the pen. When ever you install a 7mm transmission hold it beside the pen and it will act as a stop giving you the perfect length every time.

I want to try this! My drill press is too short to fit a blank that size AND a bit that size. So I either need to buy a new drill press or else figure out how to drill it on my lathe. Serves me right for buying a cheap little drill press. Also, it seems like if you trimmed the sides of the chaos blanks down, wither on the table saw or just the sanding disc, it would make them easier to deal with in the drill press. I've been doing that with some of my weirder blanks, I think it helps. Anyway, another greatly helpful video, you have fantastic content for pen turners!!! Thanks!
@RJBWoodTurner3 жыл бұрын
I find that when drilling longer blanks on the lathe that if the bit has some flex it will wobble. If you can turn the blank round, perhaps you can drill half way from one end then flip to the other end to drill the rest of the way through.
@PattersonPatch4 жыл бұрын
When I make my modified slimline pencils I drilled out the blank, cut to length and then used the stock tubes and just inserted them into each end, leaving a slight gap in the middle and then proceeded as normal (sand the ends to clean up and turn)

Nice job Bob. I've discovered that on the slimline pencils, it might be better to press the nib end part in last. The walls are so thin that it is very easy to collapse it. I've had to make a couple of new parts to replace ones that I messed up.

Ouch, yes, if you’ve found a better/safer way of assembly by all means stick with it. I’ll keep that in mind if I ever hear anyone having that issue.

What is the best wax to use on a CA Finnish to really make it pop out.
@RJBWoodTurner Жыл бұрын
I can’t answer that question. There is no best. Everyone has a different opinion on what they like. I like Nova, McGuires, renaissance, one-step, Hut, crystal clear paste wax, Plast-X. I use what I have available. Most of it has been griven to me. Otherwise I buy what I can get the cheapest. Redress, Bob

Very nice. I may have just found a new favorite. Those chaos blanks are quite interesting. I do have a question for you. Where do you get your CA glue from. I live North of you a little ways and am not finding it at Hobby Lobby or Micheals. I need to check Woodcraft still. It would probably be easier just to order it though. Thanks for another great video.

One other quick comment/question. I bought the Rockler pen press and it serves for a holder when drilling the blanks. But, I find it requires quite a bit of hand strength to turn the handle and get the pens together (gearing ratio doesn't seem high enough). How hard is it to press in the pens with the Milesscraft pen press you are using? Thinking about possibly getting one but wanted someone who is using it to give me their thoughts.
@RJBWoodTurner2 жыл бұрын
I’ve had three pen presses and The Milescraft is by far the best of the bunch. You will have to apply some force to the handle when pressing a component into a pen but that is normal for a tight fit. I love the flip up spacers that easily adjust to any pen length. If you belong to a turners club, ask around to see if one of your fellow turners owns one and will bring it to a meeting any let you test it out. It’s really a nice press. Regards, Bob

You made that? 😀 I recently bought a squaring jig like yours. When clamping it to the mitre gage sometimes it lifts off the table and comes out of square. Do you ever run into this? I dont want my pen press permanently mounted either. I've been clamping it to my workbench with quick grip clamps. I put the clamp on the press near the screw holes and tighten it from the bottom. Keeps the press from sliding around making it easier to just barely move the transmission.
@RJBWoodTurner4 жыл бұрын
Hello Mike, I haven’t had the issue of the jig and miter gage lifting off the table while using it. I do remove the clamped set often to use the sander for other tasks. I wonder, are you going past center while sanding? I could see where that would lift the tool. I stay on the back side of the disk. That way it’s always downward momentum. Regards, Bob

Nice job! I did my first modified SL last week following your earlier video! It was a fun change of pace until I crushed the one end pitting it together 🤦♂️.
