Modified Slim Line Pen from Figured Cedar
I showed a photo of a modified Slimline pen over on Facebook a couple weeks ago and was flooded with requests to make a video showing how the pen was made.
I had a few hours before closing down the temporary shop and decided to film the process for everyone interested.

Nice one Bob, I'm going to try this. I never use my drill press to bore the blanks, It's not accurate enough for a blank that size. I now use my new lathe, which I will be doing a review on soon. i put the blank into the scroll chuck, make sure it is at 90 degrees to the bed with a an engineering square and drill with my jackobs chuck, I find this more accurate. Once again a very nice and informative video. Regards, Bill.

Great idea. Lucky for me that I have a sawmill close by and he saves me lots of unique pieces of wood. Yesterday, I cut a scrap of quilted maple into enough blanks for a dozen pens. I have a cedar piece that ill cut up today. I dont think it will be as nice as the ones you got, but its cedar and cedar always looks great. Thanks for the excellent way to add some flair to the slim/fun line pen kits

I have 2 cedar boards that are 66" by 14". Gojng to make a waterfall table. The top will have an acrylic inset that is 24 x 30 x1/2 thick. They were 1 slab at the sawmill that we cut in half to transport in my SUV. So they will be a perfectly matched waterfall. I should have some decent cutoffs to play with. I only got into pens to teach a neighbor lady how to do them. Plus I have close to 100 pen kits that came with my used lathe. I really love the use of slimline into a 1 piece pen. Beautiful. Now, her son makes the pens and sends them here and sells them at craft shows. We share a tent, I sell bowls, boards, rolling pins, honey dippers. Everything except pens. I've only made about 8, so far, but each one is getting better. I'm basically using your CA finishing process (I'm out of thin, so 7/8 coats of medium with the micro mesh polishing. Plus no plastic polish so I used a high price liquid car polish that did a good job.) I'm ordering some thin and some Hut tonight. I'm 84 and don't want to waste away in the lounge chair watching soaps. Thanks for all the videos and the great ideas. BR

I was making one of these last night and remember another tip/warning. When you glue in the one fixed tube you shouldn't "pump" in the glue. It can create a ridge or drops of glue in front of the tube that for a normal pen would be trimmed off but for this design could interfere with the loose tube. I partially inserted the tube without glue, applied the thick CA to the tube and then just spun the tube as I pushed it in. I guess with CA the excess may soak into the wood but I could see more issues with epoxy and poly glue.
@RJBWoodTurner
@RJBWoodTurner 8 жыл бұрын
Good point Cliff, I'm going to make modified pen with a closed end, what are your thoughts on glue build up for that?
@chartle1
@chartle1 8 жыл бұрын
+RJBWoodTurner I have one of those in the back of my mind and the way I planned on doing it was to use a transfer pipet and CA. Its a long disposable medicine dropper like device. I could suck up some CA and mark the pipet on how far it would have to go it before applying the glue. www.amazon.com/Plastic-Transfer-Pipettes-Gradulated-Pack/dp/B011R1HPDU/ref=lp_318122011_1_1?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1453037937&sr=1-1 My wife works in a research lab so she can grab me a few. But what about epoxy on on a bamboo skewer? But it would be tough for a slimline, the glob of glue would be about the size of the 7mm hole. There are also long precision CA glue bottle tips that could deliver the CA far down into the tube. Or even hypodermic syringes with long thick needles. www.google.com/search?q=ca+glue+applicator+tips&safe=off&sa=X&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS586US586&biw=1920&bih=979&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&ved=0ahUKEwjAqv-q_rDKAhXJ8z4KHR6nAYIQsAQIQw But even if you got glue on the sides of the blank, inserting the tube would tend to clean off the sides and it should collect at the bottom of the hole. As long as it didn't fill up the head space between the end of the tube and the end of the ink refill you should be ok. You could also drill the hole a little bit longer to collect this glue. Just keep it vertical until the glue sets.

AW RIGHT, AW RIGHT! AW RIGHT!!! This is exactly what I have been looking for! I have a lot of friends that, like me, have problems gripping the smaller (thinner?) pens. While I like the slimline for its cost and ease, I have never liked the restriction of having the hour glass figure. The procedure that you have shown will enable me to provide my friends with a quality pen that they can actually hang on to. Well done my friend!

@chartle1
@chartle1 8 жыл бұрын
One other tip/warning with this design that I don't think is brought up here or in the video. You really have to make a fatter slim line. If you turned this down to regular slimline size there wouldn't be enough material at the non-tube end and you could crush it easier especially when changing the ink. There is a work around and I'm pretty sure this is addressed in the library at the IAP. You drill out the "non tube" end and glue in a short section of 8 mm tube. This will then support the pen at that end and slip over the 7 mm tube. I have researched this and supposedly the 8 mm tubes at Pen State for their pencils are just a little less in diameter than other 8 mm tubes.
@RJBWoodTurner
@RJBWoodTurner 8 жыл бұрын
+Cliff Hartle Thank you Cliff, This is very valuable information. I have several 8mm pen tubes from Penn State, I will have to see how the compare to the 7mm tubes. Regards,Bob

Update. I've made 5 of the 1 piece slims so far. A cedar that blew up at the front due to a catch at a tiny knot. But I saved it with CA. 2 figured maple that are really nice, a segmented figured maple with an East India Rosewood band that is beautiful. And another segmented that the CA joint failed so I re glue with 2 part epoxy. Which also failed when I was pressing in the cap and clip. Glued it back with CA and activator but didn't use an interior dowel to line up the 45° angles. So, of course the sections were slightly off. Enough that the front nib section wouldn't go in all the way. Ruined by a dumb mistake. First failure out of a dozen. Not bad but disappointing. Thanks for al. Your excellent videos.

Think how much you’ve learned from those failed pens. I’m currently working on Herring Bone blanks and have made probably 20 of them and so far none have been turned into a pen. Great idea! The slimline is a bit skinny for me and I don't like the wasp look when making it fatter. This solves that problem. As for the idea, it seems every time I come up with one the age old saying "There's nothing new under the sun" seems to apply. Still, you thought of it on your own and were kind enough to share, so thank you.

That's a great idea. I'm out of CA right now, but I'm going to go epoxy a couple beautiful blanks together tonight with some fancy wood I haven't wanted to cut for slimline kits. I believe I've mentioned before I just started turning and bought that style pen kits to learn on. so glad I have a new option and can use some of my nicer wood I use for knife handles. This pen turning is addictive! There should be a warning label on the kits. I love red cedar. You made a stunning pen. What a cool idea!! I'm in the process of making a couple of comfort grip pens...without the rubber grip and without the center trim ring. In place of the trim ring I'm using a small piece of corian glued to the top blank. This required a slightly longer top tube, but an easy fix. I'm planning to turn the blanks almost down to the comfort grip bushing, then remove the bushing, put the blanks together on the mandrel and sand them as if they were one piece. I'll re-insert the bushing and finish the blanks. I hope it all works out like I planned!!
@RJBWoodTurner
@RJBWoodTurner 8 жыл бұрын
I don't like to use that rubber grip either. I like the idea of the Corian. When I've made pens without a center band, out of wood, as you barrel trim, stop short and apply some thin C/A to the ends of the pen. Let it soak in and dry then finish trimming. I find that I get a much smoother action between the two halves if its not just end grain to end grain. Regards, Bob

+RJBWoodTurner Hi Bob, I don't think I can post pictures here, but I'll try to send you a picture of the finished pens. One is stabilized redwood burl with a CA finish, the other is Ziricote with OB shine juice finish. They came out pretty decent.Rich

this is great.... i've never been a fan of that ring on the slimlines. can't wait to try it. A little tip for ca finishing- instead of blue tape, just save the tiny little ziploc bags from your pen kits, and use those as little finger covers. thanks for sharing all this info with us!

RJBWoodTurner give them a try. Just make sure they're not dusty, and only apply a small amount of CA at a time. Since the plastic doesn't absorb any of the CA, you'll need to use way less than with paper towels.

Nicely done Bob. I especially like the fact that you worked with your 'customer' to design a pen that is just right for her. Don Ward wrote a brilliant book on modifying slimline pens -- Turning Modified Slimline Pens: Beyond the Basics. It has become almost a bible for me when it comes to slimlines and there is a picture of a 'longwood' slimline on the cover. I highly recommend this valuable guide; it is available on Amazon.

Next time when you clean out the chips when drilling the blank, make sure you get them out of the flutes of the drill bit too. I think that's what was causing the trouble when you were drilling the blank. Cheers from GA. Nice pen by the way. Love it!
