Hi Settele, I have some difficulty with trying to turn the modifier into a question as I am unsure of what words to omit (beginning prepositions or conjunctions perhaps?). I can see that you omitted the word “because” when turning the modifier in the video example into a question but I am unsure when I should do that or when I should turn the entire modifier into a question. For instance, the modifier “Named in 1999 as one of the greatest achievements by a U.S. chemist in the past 100 years, _____,” should I ask myself “what is named in 1999 as one of the greatest achievements by a U.S. chemist in the past 100 years?” Or “what is the greatest achievements by a U.S. chemist in the past 100 years?” Sorry I hope this doesn’t sound too confusing 😅.

Not confusing at all! This is a good question. I generally like to change the modifier as little as possible when turning it into a question. Usually, I can just add “what is” to the beginning to make a simple question that doesn’t change the subject of the modifier in any way. That doesn’t always work, so I sometimes have to reword the modifier slightly, but that’s risky. The more you change it, the greater the risk of falling into a trap by identifying the wrong subject to start the answer choice. For the example in the video, adding “what” to the beginning wouldn’t work, so I had to trim the “because”. I guess I was more focused on identifying the “it” in the modifier. I’m not 100% sure, but pronouns in modifiers are probably a good clue of what we should be looking for in the answer. I think turning them into questions will get easier as you practice, though. Just keep trying it!

yes, it’s a tough rule if you don’t know what you’re looking for, but it’s very predictable if you do
