Isn't easier to buy type B cable stops ?
@robertferriter69085 жыл бұрын
I have had a beautiful old Cilo for years that has the identical problem. The previous owner had converted it to a single speed rather than deal with the issue. I have had a vaguely similar process in mind, but to watch you actually get it done is inspirational. Now I, a mere bike mortal, can attempt it with a reasonable expectation of success. I bet that this clip doesn't apply to more than a handful of people world wide, so I especially appreciate that you took the time to make this ! Thank you.

A 8-32 machine screw is very common & almost identical to an M4.5-0.75, so that’s what I used when I found myself in exactly this situation. Thanks for the video - I followed your instructions to file down the cable stop and it worked perfectly!
@thetoolman32 жыл бұрын
Great tutorial. Rather than rethreading the screw, you can buy stainless steel M4.5 button head cap screws from places like McMaster Carr. The only downside is you have to buy 50 at a time. But if you don't already have a tap & die set, a $15 box of screws is cheaper.

This is a great video. I found this some months back when I picked up frame with these bosses (80's Lotus Eclair), but never got around to modifying the stops/finding the screws, etc. Now I'm revisiting as I just picked up a second frame that has these (Shogun 1000). Going to get some good filing practice now!
@alexanderb40676 жыл бұрын
Hey RJ, I had the same issue when upgrading my steel bike to fit a modern (2011) shimano ultegra group a little more than a month ago. This video was timed really bad from my perspective! I honestly went through all of your videos to find some reference material to aid me in the process. I ended up removing most of the boss with a hand file since my screwtapper snapped halfway in. Then I drilled a hole through the frame at the boss part for some support (it's holding up fine for now) and clammed the two cable stops with a threaded rod and two nuts. Besides that little work around (I am still not sure if it is completely safe), I used many of your videos to help me in the transformation process. My gratitude for your useful videos! Keep up the good work. ;-)

I also thought about filing down the little key on the frame, but I might file the frame even if it's taped off. Also, the metal on the cable stop is probably easier to file than the steel on the frame. Good times in the shop/garage!

That was really interesting... I have been running across alot of SS(single speed) frames on ebay and they don't have cable stops just the cable guides. I wish you would make a brazing video or some type of dongle that fits into the cable guide to act as a cable stop. The gears will shift up to a certain rear cog dimension but on the larger cogs it takes too much force to shift and the cable comes develops a curve and pops out of the guide. Do you think there is an easy fix for this?
@MrJonas22556 жыл бұрын

I've two questions, while fully servicing a Specialized Sirrus (1989/1991??), that was previously converted. 1) after removing the bolts the cable stops do not come out, should I force pull those out with some pliers or should they come out easily (they do not)?
@MrSegersall2 жыл бұрын
Second question, as this is a steel frame, I'm thinking in drilling holes in for converting to internal cable routing (top rear brake and under down tube just after the cable stop adaptors), is that something feasible or am I just lost? Thank you for your time and help

Love your videos RJ! I have an old shimano 105 setup on my steel Lemond and the front derailleur has stops similar to these in your video, but in the rear derailleur side of the downtube the stop is not a barrel but a chrome switch that has a few clicks. Any info on this? It seems to make a significant adjustment on the rear derailleur anytime I adjust but I can’t seem to find any info online as far as proper adjustments, etc. thanks!!!
@RJTheBikeGuy5 жыл бұрын
Just a variation of this.
@domadiful5 жыл бұрын
Cool. Figured as much. I took small and large chainrings off my triple and converted from drop bars to flat bars so I added a new shimano Sora shifter and kept the old shimano 105 rear derailleur. I tuned the rear derailleur so that everything is working smooth EXCEPT every couple of pedals the rear derailleur makes a click and seems like it is beginning a shift but doesn’t actually shift. It’s consistent on every gear and I tried turning barrel adjusters both ways all the way and still happens. I’m wondering if it’s an incompatibility issue between the Sora shifter and 105 derailleur? What do you think? Thanks!
@RJTheBikeGuy5 жыл бұрын
No, the Sora should be compatible with the 105. They are both SIS. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKvVoXZtn9etbrc
