Modifying A Badland 2500 LB ATV Winch To Rotate The Woodmaxx SB 48 Chute

Using a Badlands winch from Harbor Freight as a drive motor to rotate the chute on my Woodmaxx SB 48 snowblower. Took some major mods but it works great.

Another fella posted about Airens and how they treated you, shameful at best. I currently own 3, an Airens 36" 1985 and a Yardman 33" 1999 and a newer 60" like yours from Woodmax. But the older Airens I have is old and rudimentary solid piece of equipment and its reliable. Same with the Yardman after some wheel bushings and replacement chains tightened the drive up completely after some chain jumping a few winters ago. What are these leaders of corporations thinking selling junk and no customer service in addition, now thats despicable treatment to the purchasing public. Loyalty is a two-way street. That is a fantastic way to use this winch, I was going to set up exact same winch but use winch cable I've seen in another video. Mounted way over on left side of top flat area with cable over to chute using a bar with idler and spring to keep tension. Forget that, I'm going to duplicate what you did, very nice and clean job. Using the aluminum spindle itself cuts out all the other minutiae. Your videos should be used in high school shop classes, your a natural teacher.

I have the same snow blower and very pleased with the quality. I turned the cutting edge upside down and installed a wheel on each side to keep the blower off the ground about an inch and a half. This works great for to keep my gravel driveway intact.

William, I have the SB60 and am struggling with that same problem of bulldozing gravel, I did buy much larger skids for the sides but havent had time to mount. Can you talk about how you used wheels on your SB48, would be interested to see how you mounted and adjust for conditions?

Very nice installation. I duplicated this on a 74 inch schulte blower with a manual crank. On initial operation in My first go around I broke the Allen screw that was half way through the shaft. I decided to stiffen this at the drive point so I used a type w weld hub - - 1 1/4 fit loosely over the spool shaft. I drilled the w hub Allen hole through the hub so the drive bolt / shear bolt went all the way through the w weld hub the spool and the turning shaft and set in the Allen screw threads 5/16 coarse. A much better setup for the high torque event when the chute reached the limit of travel which is were I ran into trouble on my first go around and install. Your installation had no end of travel so I needed to deal with that with a stiffer drive which is described above and to stop the chute while protecting the motor and gearing. I found a resettable circuit breaker after testing with fuses and blowing 8 or 10.in my case 15 amps was marginal and 20 amp was a-little high. I installed. 20 amp resettable circuit breaker and found a 15 amp manually resettable fuse. Under ideal conditions I have about 1-2 seconds after the chute stops before the 15 amp fuse trips. In a better situation I would reverse the breaker and the manually resettable fuse - 15 amps on the auto reset circuit breaker and 20amps on the manually reset fuse. I am curious what happens when everything is full of snow and frozen up😀 Thanks for a great descriptive video and A great idea that definitely will work for me

Sounds like you could use the next size up winch motor for that big a blower. This has worked great so far and I keep the ball bearings that the chute rotates on and the ring well greased so it has never frozen. If your blow freezes up and fills with snow try a woodmaxx blower. Thanks for watching.

I've used these to power a 30 gallon bucket cement mixer as well as raise and lower a trailer ramp using one connected to scissor jack. They do get hot, but the biggest issue for me is how LOUD they are. Like REALLY LOUD. I use them to pull cars onto my trailer, and I hate how much noise they make. I also have a 12,000 lb winch which is very heavy and expensive,so I think it might get stolen if left on my trailer stored outside, but they are too powerful, if something catches pulling up a car, they will just rip it right off. The small ones will stall instead. The big one is very quiet. It has the gears on the other side of the drum, so not as easy to use it for other purposes. I was thinking of using one for my really big 1/3 yard cement mixer and maybe wrap a cable around the drum and have it unwrap it. Not seen anyone try that approach. Can always rewrap it if the mix isn't done before the cable runs out. A boat anchor which just has a few turns on the drum.

Actually I cannot even hear it back there when using the machine. A heavy winter hat, diesel engine cranked up for pto speed , and whine of the hydrostatic transmission drown it out. No problems with it operating at below zero temps caked with ice. Seems like a good motor for something like this. I just bought their 5k winch for my side by side and that is quite loud but was cheap and works. I think all winches in this price range have no thought put into noise control because they are just intermittent use rated. Thanks for watching.

We usually have a couple good lake effect storms a year so it is just a matter of when. I did this so I didn't need to snake the handle through the shield I am making for the tractor. Mostly I wanted to see how the winch would work as a gearmotor for other projects. Thanks for watching.

there a great wench for the money. I mounted one to the front of my 1990 4 wheeler mainly for lifting and lowering a snow plough. I had a supper wrench mounted previously but after 20 years it broke. and it fine on a smaller 4 wheeler battery no problems in the two years of use, now I have a k 1500 Chevy with a western and heat lol

Genius idea for a low rpm motor, I been looking for a 12 v low rpm motor they are very expensive I think this might work to drive solar tracker have you ever try to check rpm to see how fast it’s turning .

Nice job done there!!! I have a winch motor to turn my chute but it goes some slow. The winch gearbox seems to be the same, so I don't know why that would be!! Your's works sweet though!!!

I am hooking it to the kubota battery. I just received the winch connector I ordered and will show it in the next video. Takes less then 5 amps to turn it and most of that seems to be used to release the brake. Thanks for watching.

Great video ! After watching the disassembly of the winch I did not see a "brake system" in the spool. I have one just like it and proceeded to tear it down further into the planetary gears and found nothing there other than extremely thick grease. With the planets removed the motor sun pinion rotated freely with pliers save for what seemed like some kind of very weak magnetic detent force about every 22 degrees ( my guess is that force is some motor magnet thing and not a brake thing). Anyhoo I found no "Brake System" in that winch save for very thick grease. The gear ratio for that unit is 153:1 . Aside from thick grease in the planetary gears I wonder what prevents that motor from unspooling under load? I would not have dug into my unit had it not seen for your video. Thank you. You are right. There is no real brake on these low cost units. Short the motor leads and with the gear ratio it will hold a partial load. That's why they are not for lifting. Thanks for watching,

@@28704joe The gear ratio prevents it from moving, but not absoluately. They are way too noisy for a tilt front end, I used a convertible top drive for my cars tilt front end, they are quiet and more compact and well suited to the hood.

I gave up on driving the tilt and went went with a frontend that slides out 8" on a slotted plate shifting the center of gravity on the hood assembly making it easy to rotate. ( Thats the plan). The convertible top drives I happened on were hydraulic and I wanted to keep out of that if possible. What top drive did you settle on? @@murraymadness4674

I may be wrong but I was under the impression that at least part of the problem with the Ariens SB was your gravel driveway. Have you ever tried it out on the road where there is pavement? If performance improves on pavement you might be able to use that as a selling point to someone that has a paved driveway.

It worked ok on the flat road in front of my house without much snow. It still climbs up with any kind of dense snow. The autoturn kicks it around bad in my gravel. The worst part was on the sidehill where water dripped on the drivetrain made it slip and burned up the drive disc within the first hour. It is only for sale to someone with a flat blacktop driveway asis. I have also thought of parting it out on ebay if no one wants it after watching the videos. Thanks for watching.
