The first part of a multi episode series on fabrication of a motorized trailer dolly or mule, to move a travel trailer without a vehicle.
This Episode begins the series by showing a step by step process to modify a small electric winch, converting it into a drive motor with a 15 tooth #40 Chain Sprocket.

Nice work retrofitting the sprockets. Thanks for sharing your approach to "making it work" 🙂

After I watched this video I went out to the barn and found an old atv winch and made a chain drive lift for my sawmill. Thanks, I was going to use a dump truck tarp motor, but this saved me like 150 bucks

Or if you can weld or know someone who does. Do what I did. Purchase a used snowblower. $100. Get rid of blower discharge chute and auger. Modify and weld plate for interchangeable balls, on upper part of snow intake,and two heavy duty 360 casters to lower front of blower snow intake. Fabrication, cutting and welding is all, and a little “shop time”. Cost me less than $200 total, with 8hp blower. Trailer dry weight- 5500 lbs . Been using it a few times a year for 5 years.. Good luck .

Thanks for the great video. I had been looking around on KZbin for a few hours looking for a gear reduction, torque increasing mechanism to build a metal fatigue testing machine for my work. I looked a Makermoter gear drives, wiper motors, electric window mechanisms and right angle grinder gear boxes, but this hack of a winch motor and planetary drive is by far the highest torque and cleanest solution that I have seen. Decision is made. This is what I am doing. Thanks again.

From one father to another, thanks for the smart solution with two winches. How do you get them on the trailer then? What video is it when you mount them or have I misunderstood you?

Absolutely my Friend, The Sprocket part number is "40H15H" and the Tapered Hub is part number "H 1 1/4". A simple google search will locate multiple vendors. I sourced the sprockets from Martin Sprocket & Gear and the hubs from Amazon.

@papasfixitshop7982

It moved my little 5K lb trailer okay. It’s flat here so I can’t say about uphill. Battery life was my problem, two winches use a lot of power.

Wonder if won't be easy Direct drive for someone with no milling machine
@papasfixitshop7982
@papasfixitshop7982 2 жыл бұрын
It won’t be easy without a Mill to be sure. The old school method is to carefully lay marks on it and drill a series of small holes in lines and then trim it with a Dremel tool. It takes patience and a bit of skill as well as time. I think about the fact that sometime in the past a skilled craftsman with basic tools built the first functional Lathe! If someone did that in pre-Roman times, it’s certainly possible now! Thanks for the comments!

It is made by ANMEC, 13” X 30” Gear Head model BL330E. I purchased it from Toolots.com. There are several videos about it on my page. Short story is that I love the lathe! The vendor is non-existent for after sales support.

Thanks for asking! If you lived here it would be a possibility, but the one I made in this video series would be too expensive when considering labor, material and shipping. My cost of parts and materials for this build was close to $900! And the thing weighs over 200 pounds. Even the one I built for a customer last year was over $500 in materials and $200 labor and weights 110 pounds.
