Modifying an existing Fence to keep an Old Person from bothering Neighbor

Homeowners daughter hires us to add pickets on fence to keep father from climbing on and pestering neighbor. We only have a couple hours to complete.

This is so, so sad. We just lost my beloved Momma (-in-Law) to dementia in January 2021. I stayed with the family after my husband died 12 years ago, because it was where I belonged. My Dad and Sister (-in-Law) got creative to keep her safe. Alarms on the doors and windows that would chime to the house and their phones when they opened or closed, video cameras to keep an eye on things and someone there 24/7 to make sure she was safe. I miss you Momma Cat. You were the best mother-in-law anyone could hope for! I hope you and your son, my Eli, are together again. Our family hasn't been the same without you two.

Dementia is hard to deal with for everyone. My grandmother kept calling the police about home intruders. She kept claiming that children were living in her attic and kept crawling down the wires and eating here cookies. The chief of police actually crawled up into her attic to show no one was there. That was when she had to be moved to an assisted living home. Thank you for trying to keep the peace with the fence work.

When i locked the gaits my dad climbed over our 6 foot fence to get to the pub after my Mum died. He did not drink but his grief was overpowering him. He must have been so lonely and sad. Dementia is a heartbreaking disease.

We had a somewhat similar dilemma with my mom. When she sees herself in the mirrored slider doors, she thinks it is an uninvited person in her room that won’t speak to her. It makes her angry. We had to turn the mirrored doors back side out. Problem solved. The uninvited person left.

My husband's mother was first diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic.. before alzheimer's.. She would wander the neighborhood, pulling things out of people's trash, and yard.. swearing it was hers, and they must have stolen it. Luckily, shed lived in that neighborhood for over 40 yrs.. and people were sympathetic..

Merry, the exact same thing happened with my mother. I had to turn the mirrors around. She didn’t get angry though, she had conversations with her image. She told me once I was having sex with some man, the 3 of us in the same bed, no, she wasn’t a participant. What could I do I asked her if was good looking! She always seemed to have a sense of humor about it.

My grandmother had dementia and my aunt tried to keep her at home for as long as possible. It finally got to the point that grandma needed to move to one of those assisted living places. At one point, the folks who worked there told my aunt that grandma and some of her fellow patients had been “busted”: they were standing in a circle in the entry way, discussing some rather extreme plans for a jailbreak. “You knock out the receptionist, you hotwire a car, etc.”. My grandmother, the gangster.

Both my great grandfather who lived to 93 and my great great uncle who lived to 92 escaped assisted living homes. My grandpa fought the 2 cops that found him and nearly overpowered them. My uncle was found a few miles away in a wheelchair and when the cops asked where he thought he was going he just replied “Texas”. This was all in Kentucky

I hope the modification worked for the client. Elderly people are doggedly determined and like toddlers, have all the time in the world to figure things out, even with dementia. At the age of 86 my grandmother did not ever have dementia, but in the process of house sitting for a friend who was on vacation, managed to lock herself out of the front side of the house. She knew her friend had a spare key hidden in the backyard, but the gate was locked, so she climbed the fence, fell into the backyard and shattered an ankle... Laid in the yard for over an hour shouting in the summer AZ heat (about 115 degrees F) until someone came to help. The ankle was shattered so bad the Drs wanted to amputate. She wouldn't let them... It healed up surprisingly well after some surgery. A few months later she was back walking and wearing heels...! Ten years later at the age of 95 1/2, while my Dad was in the hospital, she convinced people at church to help her get a car, got T-boned by a large truck on the driver side... Managed to get herself out of the mangled vehicle and was waiting on the side of the road when EMS showed up.. They said the car was so badly damaged on the driver side they would have not been able to extract her from that side even with Jaws of Life. At the hospital, with a 3rd degree AC separated shoulder and a small brain bleed, she fought off 5 security guards and two nurses, until my cousins showed up during the fight and she played nice til they left. Because she bit one of the nurses during the fight they put her in restraints. She managed to get one of the wrist restraints off with her teeth and they had to restrain her head too. 5ft 3in tall...only 40% heart function (CHF), a pacemaker, diabetic, barely able to walk, nearly deaf, hardly able to see... mean as a snake and could still fight like a demon! Never, Ever. underestimate what the elderly are capable of, even if they do have dementia!

I have worked with Alzheimers and other types of dementia individuals for many years. They are very inventive, strong and can become combative instantly both physically and verbally. They imagine things happening that have not etc. This family is trying their best to allow this person to remanin at home as long as possible for which they deserve a medal. It is a difficult situation.Until you have experienced it you really have no idea. and should refrain from negative comments. You have to find the lighter side of situations to maintain sanity at times. Thank you for going above and beyond in assisting this family in solvng their delima.

My dear husband had dementia. He climbed through windows, over gates, over fences, just to get away, because he wanted to go back to the farm where he grew up. The farm was about 1300 kilometers from where we lived at that time. I had to lock all the doors and kept the keys in my pocket. That wall is lovely!. Hopefully, the old father would leave the neighbours alone now.

I work at nursing homes with a lot of dementia patients, and we have residents who will go into other people's rooms. One way to prevent this from happening is we cover the door with black paper, but, I watched a video recently on should I paint my fence black, and it turned out real nice. It made the yard appear bigger, and brought out the green plants in front of the fence.

It soles the problem of an aging fence. Over time, the pickets shrink and the spaces are enough for a clear view. I'd love to have mini slats to cover the cracks.

The other women at my mother’s memory care facility were calling her the most vile names. I convinced my mother that the medication the doctors were suggesting would make them stop. Mom took the pills and the other ladies quit doing it. The marvels of modern medicine.

We have a gentleman in our neighborhood that suffers from dementia. Every once in a while he shows up at my home. Of course this to has be when I'm trying to do home improvement or chores. Sometimes he's just kind of curious and sometimes a little hostile. What seems to help is I'll stop and start talking with him get him on my porch and let him sit and talk about whatever he wants. Even get us some drinks, coffee or iced tea. Usually after about 20-30 his family will show up. On a couple of occasions they have come over looking for him, when he wasn't here. Can't imagine what they're going through. Last year they had to put him in a nursing home.

May 2021 a story made the news where an elderly couple with dementia escaped their assisted living facility. The husband was a code-breaking specialist in World War II. He listened carefully as people went in and out of the facility and punched numbers into the electronic keypad. He figured out the number sequence and they escaped. They were returned safe. But never underestimate Old People.

My Dad was very mechanical and could fix anything. When he got demenia he started taking everything apart and throwing the pieces all over so you couldn't find them. He'd bend the parts, pull the springs apart. Then he'd swear he didn't do it. Determined doesn't even come close to describing their behavior.

We started getting 'cookies' on a plate left our front porch several years ago on a holiday weekend. My wife found the first plate, kinda looked like oatmeal cookies but it had rained and they weren't covered so she tossed them. It happened again the next day and I was the one that found them, same 4-5 oatmeal-looking cookies uncovered on a plate. After looking at them and puzzling about it, we realized they weren't even cookies but little cookie sized piles of kitty litter. We honestly thought someone was messing with us, we could not figure it out. Then 2 days later our next door neighbor came to us, apparently they had brought their elderly mother home for the holidays from the nursing home, and she had been getting up early in the morning to make "cookies" to bring to all of her new neighbors, and was using whatever ingredients she happened to grab. It was sweet and kind of heartbreaking at the same time.

It's such a sad disease. I'm sure whoever is taking care of the poor gentleman appreciates this too. There's a limit to how much strange behavior a non involved person can tolerate. Around here the Alzheimers homes have non intrusive security like door sensors and enclosed courtyards to protect these people.

My husband just completed that project on a big section of our old fence.. There's a determined young bear close by, that pulls the boards loose and strolls thru the yard and knocks a few loose on the other fence to get out.. A couple months ago, he surprised my 12 year old dog and ripped half his ear off before my husband clocked him with a 2x4.. A couple days later he was back at it with a few boards torn off in a different section.. So, adding new boards, was our solution too . But damn, lumber prices are crazy this year!

By far the best job I ever got to do: a man hired me to use the existing shutter mounting screw holes to run fishing line in a diamond pattern over two windows in the back yard. He also had us plans the bush/vine version of bougainvillea three rows deep and weave them into the fishing line, blocking the windows. Turns out his daughter just turned 15 and wanted flowers planted outside her window for her birthday...

Tom - Unfortunately, fences don't always help. Won't stop someone from climbing over either if they really want to. Victim of 10-yr nightmare with multiple convicted felon, drug dealer, psychopath, etc. Property vandalized and stolen in spite of a fence. I feel your pain.

Well. Been there done that. My grandmother had dementia and lived with us. Great fence idea. We put gadgets the top of our doors. Out side the screen door. And other solutions. Finally a nursing home. She escaped several times. Going home to her farm. Which was in Arkansas. This is California. You know it is what it is.

I think that while doing these videos, you are creating a wealth of valuable information and experience for journeymen and apprentices can learn from and be thought to at trade college. I seriously wish the government would grant money for programs to video these projects and qualifying students can access them online. A master electrician who taught at a trade school in Denver had students come to my house to observe, but that training opportunity is gone forever. A videotape should be available to any student for future generations

Really appreciate your comment. We started our channel for individuals in the construction field. Yes a DIY’er will benefit from our videos but its aimed for the guys and girls in the field. From tool reviews to certain parts of a job that methods vary from contractor to contractor we want to discuss. Most of all what we’re heading into is client interaction in our videos. Dealing with clients and other contractors is something we really want to start adding through out our videos. I know our videos are a little un orthodox but that’s who we are. 👍👍👍

I do hope this helped. As someone else noted, peoplewith dementia can be creative. You have never understood the true meaning of thinking outside the box until you have dealt with them. I do feel sorry for him, his family and the neighbours. It's hard enough for the family without him having become fixated on the neighbours. If he is angry with them it can really have serious consequences for both sides. I totally understand the neighbours as well. It is frightening to deal with someone with dementia even when you know they can't help themselves. As someone else said, there is only so much a person can 'buy in' to this man's care. Sad.

May God bless everyone trying to do right by their loved one with dementia. (Gram had it- what a long, sad, (exhausting!) way to go! My only concern about the fence is if bees or hornets discover the space. Well, I suppose that would be further deterrent regarding climbing!

The dog at the end! 🤣🤣🤣 My momma was summoned to court when we were kids, she took us with her. The Judge called her name and said, "Dog at large!" Gales of laughter in the courtroom...we we sitting in school uniforms. 🤣 Our collie labrador had a habit of climbing the fence and running the streets while we were away every day. My momma didn't hire a fence guy, she got rid of George. 😰

And now, how confused will that poor man be, when he’s out at that fence “knowing in his heart” that “yesterday” he could stand up on that fence, but suddenly now, he can’t. Damned dementia.

My neighbor who has only lived in this house next door to me for about 18 months came over with an envelope and taped it to my front door. As I began reading the letter I slowly become to realize that this was not a letter of infatuation with me stating that she was deeply in love with me and we should run off from our significant others and small children Andy lopes somewhere in Cancun Mexico.. it was a letter demanding, not asking but demanding that I for half of the fencing cost that she claims she had to pay for in the price of buying the house next to us. I wrote her the kindest and most gentle letter that I could muster up and hold her to simply get f***** and do not come speak to me ever again in life. If your children are in need or you are in danger holler and I will be there but other than that please leave me alone. I did not buy a house to be neighborly to anyone.

Wow I swear my neighbor is suffering from dementia or something similar, as she is well into her 80’s and she is violent and attacking our rear neighbor thankfully I put up a 6ft privacy fence just when she started showing a bit more violent then her passive aggressive. I didn’t realize that something was wrong I assumed she was upset I was fencing my yard. Sadly the rear neighbor only wants to fence in the remaining of their rear property, as the fence I put up gave them half the rear fenced
