RB are a really quirky engines, with ITB and twin turbos with ceramic impellers it’s clear that it was made for motorsport, but why then is the oiling system so bad in these engines. Can you elaborate? I’ve learned a ton from you guys already🖖
@hpa101
@hpa101 6 жыл бұрын
The ceramic turbine wheels are actually terrible for motorsport use, and are known to fail above about 15 psi (the turbos on this car have already been swapped out for steel wheel variants). The oiling system in the Rb26 is known to be problematic, however in any serious competition car the oiling system will inevitably be swapped out for a dry sump anyway.
@djjmann
@djjmann 6 жыл бұрын
I've heard through the grapevine that the reason the engineers thought moving a large volume of oil through the head was regarding the solid-lifter design. They were thinking with the engine capable of such high operating RPM and solid lifters it would require more oil for lubrication and heat management. Of course, time told us that with the lackluster TLC a majority of these older R32 GTR's got, a majority of RB26's succumbed to oil sludge and pooling of oil in the head, spinning bottom end bearings and scarring camshaft journals. Of course, its common knowledge now to add a small oil return line from the head to the block near the firewall to minimize the pooling of oil in the head and maximize the availble oil in the sump for the bottom end. Anyone correct me if I am wrong, this is just items i've heard through the grapevine....

Hi Taz, well my RB25DET threw a conrod straight through the block 3 weeks ago under normal driving conditions and no mods to the engine. After it happened I was telling my mechanic about it and he said this was the 4th RB he knew that threw a rod under relatively light load. My #4 conrod was broken. Piston still moves freely with no damage to liner or piston rings.

probably had the shit beaten out of it before you owned it and has picked up a rod bearing, spun and punched it out of the block. No one really bothered to check the bearings in these motors at this age which is pretty surprising.

@@hpa101 Hi 👍 . I think the big problem is various countries had 20 /25 (?) year old import rule so it's opened up a far bigger demand for them because of the age they are now . which is unfortunate for the likes of me because the price went up 😭 . I put a deposit on a R33 GTR Lèmans in around 2007 , it was only £11500 but the garage was a real waste of time and I pulled out , I will never ever get that chance again, I later found out Lads had tried to buy R34 Nür spec's off same garage for £45000 and been messed around. Australia is definitely leading with Skylines 👍👍👍👍✌✌✌

@hpa101 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah R34 GTR's in particular have never been very cheap though in all fairness. I shudder to think what price they will become once they hit that 20/25 year barrier. Brandon here reckons S15's will be the next model to go nuts due to those import laws, but you just never know with cars really - Taz.

@@hpa101 it guts me that they are out my range at moment BUT I also am glad the price has went up because I want them to be looked after and be around for years to come . In UK the Cosworths have went absolutely ridiculous, the 3 door like you will remember from being beaten by the R32 back in the day were being sold for £6000 back in around 2002 and the Sapphire Cosworth were going for as little as £1500 same sort of time , now the prices are border line illegal 😂 . S15 I agree 110% because the S14's are for sale here for double what they were when I had my R33 gtst. I really need another Skyline in my life

It def interesting to see some tuning tips on the RB26. If those are the factory painted valve covers. Then the RB26 unit here should be the later GTR R34 RB26DETT. The original RB26 in the R32 and R33 are black. There are slight differences from the different gen of RB26s from the R32 to the R34. And the N1 and RRR blocks are the most sought after for high powered applications. Interesting the owner stick to the twin turbo setup. Many would have ditch the 90s era turbo units for the single turbo setup. Did the owner upgraded the water and oil pump? Because the stock units from the factory with high temps and boost are a bad mix. Most will upgrade those first before doing any major mods. While ITBs are great for most engines. Most would opt for a single big throttle body for simplicity. Speaking of which Mighty Car Mods is building a 240Z with the RB26 from a R33 and GTT R34 5 speed RWD only gearbox. Cant wait for the final product.
@hpa101
@hpa101 6 жыл бұрын
Don't worry, the twin turbo setup is not going to be sticking around long. They're only there because that is how the car was purchased. We will be moving to an EFR 8374 single turbo. It will also be getting a built motor, potentially with a 2.8 stroker kit. For the moment the stock oil pump remains however we've only found them to be problematic if you try spinning the engine past 8000 rpm. Of course the narrow drive face of the early RB26 crank isn't ideal and again will be addressed in the not too distant future.

The colour of the valve cover is off, so it`s probably the R32 oem with a new paint job and the R34 RB26 center badge. The CAS sensor should have been changed to the newer R34 version, if this was indeed a R34 engine. (R34 has plastic cover CAS with a different wiring pinout compared to R32/R33

Could you find out how aggressive you can be with bringing on power and maybe shed some light on the RB26's limitations around torque inertia at low rpm?
@hpa101
@hpa101 6 жыл бұрын
The stock twin turbos (or for that matter any upgraded twin turbo kits) are really the limiting factor on how aggressively the power can be brought on. The RB26 is not known for its low rpm torque, however the turbo upgrade we have planned should offer huge improvements in both power and boost response - Who says you can't have your cake and eat it :)

The one question I have is on the charging/alternator system -- do you find the stock alternator output to present any voltage issues when running a modern ECU, larger fuel system and more powerful spark setup (and commonly an HID kit for the awful stock lights)? There are high output kits available and kits to swap to something like an LS1's alternator which stock has more amps (I think 125 vs 70, as an example). Love this new video series - this is the basic mod path I am planning for on the engine side. I have a BNR32 with mods from Japan that are very similar to how this car started and just looking to tidy and modernize the engine for safety and a small bump in performance.

For spark plugs and fuel system requirements, these are topics that we cover in our members-only webinars and not something we can do justice to in just a few minutes in a video like this - www.hpacademy.com/webinars/ - Taz.

Shadowmiester1 The R32 GT-R is 4wd but simply by pulling a fuse you can run them as 2wd as they would have done in the video. The R33 and R34 GT-Rs cannot do this however as the centre diff/clutch pack is always preloaded with a little front drive.

I'd be interested to know the parasitic loss of the standard system especially at high RPMS and would also like to know if the standalone Link ECU you've chosen could control such operation?

i dont get it why anybody would have airfilter exposed to the hot hair in engine bay. its 30min job to build box for the filter and route some cold air pipes to it
@hpa101
@hpa101 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why you're keeping hot hair in your engine bay either to be completely honest, but I won't judge you 😎 Seriously though, a cold air intake is on the list for the next round of upgrades. Keep an eye out for that video in a few weeks if you enjoyed this one 🤓- Taz.
@GTRNights
@GTRNights 6 жыл бұрын
Seriously? Cold air intake isn't that important with a turbo car, since it's mostly your intercooler that's going to be doing the work. Once the air is being compressed by the turbo, it's going to heat up to WAY hotter than what's in the engine bay. Don't waste your time with anything meant to be "cold" intake because it's pointless. Dyno numbers prove cold air intakes on NA cars don't actually help either. Your main priority needs to be flow.

First off I think you need a special rail to adapt the R35 injectors but i may be wrong.Either way with the power its making on 10 psi right now it'd max out the factory R35 GTR injectors on E 85. So between the upgraded wheels in the turbos,possibility of running E85 and wanting some headroom for later on they made a excellent choice of injector.
