A lot is how you drive it. Riding the limiter is what breaks oil pumps. I’m on a stock bottom end rb26 that’s been making 500-600whp for about two years now. I don’t expect it to last forever, and I already have a spare block for rebuild, but so far it’s been holding up fine.

Real good knowledgeable stuff the secrets in the detail gd to c these advancements coming thru guess it takes many destructive test analysis , kms and computer simulation diagnosis etc for all this I do sometimes wonder about piston coatings tho as most I have seen seem to wear off isn’t the oil itself supposed to do the cushioning , lubricating, and cooling etc. hmmmmm mayb Just fashion for fashions sake ? 😳😃
@motoiq2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the coating, some can be harder than the piston metal.

Are those pins shorter too? Always wondered about that big end shaping! Thank you!
@motoiq2 жыл бұрын
No, we are for sure not fans of short or thin wall pins.
@slfrules12 жыл бұрын
Is that application specific? I've been reading about V8 4.5" bore spacing and up engines and they seem to be moving towards a short length thick wall pin to reduce the leverage on em. They probably started with heaps more clearance between the rod and piston to eliminate. I'm guessing the RB already uses that space more efficiently so to shorten the pin you'd need to reduce pin land?
@motoiq2 жыл бұрын

tune up must have been wayyy too spicy on stock parts. if it was e85, people have gone to 1000hp on the stock bottom end. not for long obviously, but it is possible without any detonation lol. it should have been fine to at least 600hp on a stock block.

Mike, I see a lot of information regarding pistons, but can you advise what type of oil rings are best for high rpm engines. Are three-piece rings better than two-piece rings? I've heard opinions that three-piece elements wear out quickly.

Australians get their stock bottom ends to over 500hp reliably with the proper mods and tune and oil. If your bottom end is failing at 400 you’re doing something wrong or bought an abused motor.

@@motoiq1:19 “the weak point of the stock motor is the stock cast piston.” I’m not trying to be a dick, but in the video you say it’s not surprising that the motor started to fail at low 400hp and not long after that you say the pistons are the weak point. I haven’t watched the whole video because I was getting pretty frustrated so maybe you correct yourself later idk. I don’t see what your problems with detonation have to due with the oil pump either. Like I said I think y’all had a bad tune or something else going on to cause that. Oil pumps failing was solved with late model RB26s. People regularly and reliably break 500hp with a stock bottom end. Pistons and rods can handle 700hp
@motoiq9 ай бұрын
The oil pump fails on the old RB's in the low mid 400's. We had them fail in a few laps on the track or on a long uphill pull. Stock pistons fail next, then the rod. We see them fail in the 400's but not on cars we control. With proper tuning and fueling it can go into the 500's but there isn't much margin. The problem with the stock oil pump gears isn't solved it's just better with the R33 and later RB's. We convert to spline drive with serious cars. The stock pistons and rods cannot handle 700 hp unless it's gentile street use but those kind of people always say I drive it hard all day for years. Do a track or drift day it's not going to go so well. Even dry sumped full race RB's don't do so well on the track at 900 hp. Cylinder walls distort and main caps shift. Most of our customers drift or do track days, even compete so our bias is more conservative and based on what we see on those conditions.
