Like I said in an earlier comment, I've had this box for a year now and my biggest reason for getting it in the first place was that it was said to control litter scatter. I got really tired of vacuuming the entire house with a traditional litter box every two days for 2 months straight. I'm a new cat owner, and to me it was really a big surprise how much litter scatters when you have two energetic kittens running in and out of a traditional litter box and surprising each other on their turn when coming out of the litter box. This top entry has been really fantastic in the litter scatter reduction. Also I really like the design and it's nicely "disguised" to not look like a litter box. Yes, it's rather expensive, but I'd rather not spend my time vacuuming every other day. I also like the replaceable tarp. It's easy to remove for cleaning, and changed when necessary.

Was it hard for your kittens to learn to use it? I am getting a kitten and I am interested in the type of litter box because I also have dogs. My cousin warned that dogs like to “snack” from litter boxes and I don’t have a great place to put the litter box where the dogs also wouldn’t get to it.

Yes, I love this litter box. And it's a breeze to clean. The liner is sturdy, so you can clean and reuse, or just replace every 3-5 months. The lid just pulls off and on and can be cleaned separately from the box. I have two big cats and I have two of these litter boxes and they have had no issues using this and it's really reduced having to vacuum all the time. And, I also use Pretty Litter and have no issues with odor. My cats transitioned to the ModKat lickety split.

I remembered you did some review on this litter box among with the other brands a while back! I got this litter box just a few days ago because I saw your demonstration on how sturdy it is! It took a day for my kitties to get used to using the litter box but now they love it!! They would sleep on top of the litter box or right next to it if we don't transfer them to our bed🤣 I also like how Modkat guides you to transform their cardboard box into a playground for them. My babies would spend the whole afternoon trying to fetch the ball out from the holes in their box. Thx for doing the reviews!!😍

I’m a new cat owner who’s had the Modkat XL for about a month now, and I really love it for my 2 now 6-month old kittens. I use the configuration that gives them the option of the front entry or top entry, but you can close up the front to make it top-entry only if you want to try and transition your cat to just use the top.

My four moth old kitten has been using for four weeks. Totally worth the money cause I literally have no litter scatter. Also the flip lid slides out very easily and removing it makes it easier to get the liner in and out.

Hi Mallory! Great review! I did notice that you never removed the swiveling lid when you were removing or placing the tarp into the modkat box. I have had this litter box for a year and when I clean it, I always open and remove the swivel lid completely. It makes so much easier to keep it clean and change the tarp. :) Hope this makes sense.

Thanks, Nanna! I did take the top off a couple of times, but I wasn't sure if that was the company's intention and thought I might have been doing something wrong. As you said, though, it would make the process a bit easier. Thank you for the tips and sharing your experience!

My first cat used a traditional litter box and I remember having to vacuum every single day 😂. Many years later when I adopted my second cat, her foster parent showed me her top entry litter box. I was amazed and the kitten seemed to really enjoy hopping in! Now I have two Iris top entry boxes and can’t imagine ever going back to a standard one. Funny thing though… I adopted my third cat, Wesley and he had never used anything like this because he was a stray and used to just do his business out on the grass. So every now and then I walk by and see him doing his business but he does it while sitting on top of the box and landing it in the hole, lmfao 🤣. He’s pretty much using a toilet at this point

I have this litter box and I really like it. My cat didn't like it at first, but maybe because she was too small. Now he is 4-5 months old and it's using it without problems. There is definitely less litter on the floor than with any other regular litter box. The liner can be taken out really easily, you just need to take out that top part. Also, it's nice that the litter that remains on top, falls back when you lift it half way. It is a little pricey, but I would totally recommend it.

What a great in depth review. It’s inspired me to share my own experience. Baseline: I have two female 6 year old cats. I have a domestic shorthair about forest size & a larger American bobtail. My cats are at their breed’s ideal weight & height. None of my cats are claustrophobic. I share this as a baseline because a top entry litter box requires some athleticism & has some inherent weight & height restrictions. Considerations before I purchased: My cats are particular about their litter boxes. My DSH Ali is less concerned about the litter box & more finicky about what’s on the inside. The actual litter & liner is where she’ll enforce her standards. She will tear up shred to bits any liner I’ve used & she will 💩 outside the litter box if the litter is dusty or feels wrong. She is a digger & a kicker. My American Bobtail Jezebel will only use open air entry litter boxes. She’s not a fan of a flap. She likes hoods over her litter box & doesn’t like biodegradable litter trays. She’s been known to cause litter boxes to crack bc she likes to lounge on the top every now & again. Litter box history: I need a litter box that is sturdy thick plastic, generously sized. They’ve only used traditional entry litter boxes so I wasn’t sure a top entry box would succeed. Considering a Modkat litter box is an investment, I wanted to hedge my bets & purchased the convertible litter box. I wasn’t sure the liner would overcome my cats vigorous litter box use so I didn’t purchase any replacements. My purchase: I own a black Modkat XL Litter Box. The dimensions according to the ModKat web sites are Length x Width x Height21.0 x 16.3 x 17.0 in. Liner height 14.5in. Top-entry width 10.25in.Front-entry width 8.25in. Front-entry height from floor 6.25in. Weight 9.0lbs. The lid can support up to 30lbs. The walk-off platform can support up to 20lb. The original order comes with a top entry & a traditional liner. My experience: The litter box is aesthetically pleasing. I’ve had it for 3 months with no issues. I’m currently using the top entry version with a liner. Ali is a kicker & the liner has lasted intact. The top entry is incredibly spacious for her & easy for her to use. One who she’s inside she’s not visible when using it. She invests a good amount of time digging & kicking up litter while in the box. My favorite part is the litter stays in the box. Jezebel my American bobtail is able to use the box comfortably. Unlike Ali she gets in does her business & gets on about her business. That’s not to say she doesn’t cover her 💩 she does. Jezebel’s head is visible from the top of the box while in use. She doesn’t use the litter box as a lounger. Which she doesn’t seem to be overly bothered by the change anyway. Between the two she is the more cautious cat & unlike Ali who immediately jumped in it after assembly I had to carry her to the litter box & pop her inside so she knew this was her knee 💩 station. That said I never once got any surprise protest poop. The cost of the box was about $130 but I’ve no regrets. I had little piles of litter to vacuum regularly & sometimes little 💩 would fly out of the box alongside that litter Ali kicked out. My litter boxes weren’t nearly as pretty & the plastic often cracked. Modkat is made of quality materials. The liner is thick (tarp like is accurate) it clips up so It doesn’t come askew the top bends in half & pops right out so it’s not awkward to scoop the poo. I do use my stainless steel litter scoop so I’ve no idea how the Modkat scoop works. Hope this helps someone.

Amazon offers some other top entry litter boxes that are in the $15-30 range. I tried the IRIS Top Entry Cat Litter Box. I found my cats used it sometimes but really preferred normal, uncovered boxes. So I'm glad I didn't invest in the modcat right off the bat. Modcat might be a good upgrade option if you know your cats will willingly use a top entry box, but it's too expensive to just try.

I don’t have this particular box, but I do have a top entry box for one of my cats. She would scatter literal piles of litter anytime she left the box, but once we started using a top entry box, the scatter was virtually eliminated. It’s a smaller box, but she’s a little cat. My bigger cat doesn’t use it and prefers her larger covered box.

Maybe-it's a mixed bag. On one hand, you're not using clay litter, which is extremely hard on the environment, but on the other, you're introducing toxoploasma gondii into the water system, which could also harm animals. A long-lasting stainless steel litter box and biodegradable cat litter might be the better choice.

I am trying a top entry litter box for a different reason and have, potentially, an additional advantage to this style of box: Its depth. My boy has long legs and does not always squat to pee. His original box was a large drywall mud pan and worked really well. But he had a growth spurt and he is long legged. The result was that he would pee over the side of the box. I got him tall a covered box that he does not like but uses. Problem is the doorway is low so when he pees in that direction he pees through the door. Also, I assumed the seam between the top and bottom pieces of this box would stop the overshoot. I was wrong: when he hits the seem the pee comes through. The seam is 13" from the floor. I have a boot tray under the box to catch all this but the cleanup is still a problem. I have had many cats, I have never had this problem. I have been told that male cats tend to shoot straight back, all new to me. There are no traditional litter boxes that are more than about 9 inches high at their entry point, this was the only style of litter box that could solve this problem. I did not buy this brand, the one I found was $52. it is 15" tall all the way around. hopefully this works and is helpful for those with an adorable problem child... Frankly, I could buy a $15 tote at lowes and cut a hole in the top of it. If he doesnt like the lid I can remove it or simply buy a large tote.

I have a top entry box that got from chewy for $30 aesthetically pleasing and helps reduce scatter. I have 6 cats and 3 of this style box and I have 3 traditional litter boxes. Just to clarify: The lid does come completely off. There is nothing awkward about it. The box holds a ton of litter so, the liner rarely gets messy. You don't really need to replace it as often as the recommended three months. It's a great box because their head easily sticks out when they are going potty so, they don't feel like they are about to get ambushed. And, there is almost no scatter. If you have an enthusiastic digger, this box can't be beat.

This modkat litter box has an XL version of this that has both a top and side opening...costs more tho. But it is a good (and safe) option just in case you wanna have your cats try top entry but are used to side entry. Also when they're older you can transition to side entry.

I really like mine I just feel that it’s a little too small for my cat now but pro tip. I did put a little bit of litter sand on the bottom below the liner only because my cat likes to scratch the liner and sometimes it moves and some urine will get on the bottom of the liner. Once I did, that seems to be happening less and also it’s easier to clean.

But the modkat looked too expensive and most importantly too small! And I don’t even have huge cats...So I ended up buying the savic hop-in box, which is about 20 dollars, and a bit bigger. My cats are still using it without the lid, because I had to fill it up with litter for them to be comfortable going in. Once the litter level lowers I’ll put the lid on and see what happens... anybody else have special cats like mine?😂

Hello there! Most cats will probably have to be trained to use the top entry box as it's not quite as intuitive as most. That said, my cat, Forest, used it without needing any assistance. $90 for a plastic litter box. It's true that there's one born every minute! We have two of the IRIS top-entry litter boxes (about $32 each from Amazon) and they do exactly what the Modkat box does, only without the hinged lid and removable liner. And quite frankly, I wouldn't want the liner, our IRIS boxes are just fine without one, the cat waste doesn't stick to the sides. Our two cats took to the IRIS boxes immediately, intuitively understanding how to jump on top of, then into the box to do their business.

My cat hates this litter box. It’s too small for him and he’s only 6 months old. This was definitely made for human aesthetics rather than cat needs.

Maybe I’m missing the point, but why would I spend $90 on this very small box when I could go buy a tote from Walmart for $10 and cut a hole into the lid?

Different strokes for different folks. Some people are willing to spend money on a pretty box that they don't have to work on, while others are willing to spend the time to do it themselves.

Thank you for this video. It's really not appropriate for my cat bc he's a large boy. He might hide in it though.

Very well, it's not so obvious as a litter box😹😹😹 That's a good one. But could be mistaken as a trash bin and shoot 3-point trash on it. 😁 Btw, looks like a products model instead of reviewer to my eyes😉

I got one of those and my cat use it as a toilet top, he poop from the top and he pee inside lol he avoide the holes so the box isn’t really doing the job haha

This thing costs $200 in Canada. Highway robbery. And the replacement liner is $60 each. That's just crazy talk. Plus the liners are bad for environment.

Ew! Do you see how much contact is necessary....lol my cat pisses all up the side of the box. No thanks. AND this is pricey for EXTRA nasty work lmao I can just lid off, scoop, done. They cray

LOL I agree! I'm looking after my brother's cat while he's in hospital and he has this extremely over-priced awful box. His cat will use it but is reluctant and anxious when doing so. She comes out COVERED in litter. I popped to BM and bought a litter tray for £2 and put them side by side...guess which ones she chooses! No litter on her, her feet, or the floor - she's not a messy pooper so I'm bewildered as to why my bro paid such an exorbitant amount for a plastic box with a hole on top. There is no way it was worth the £100 he paid or the £40 a year in liners...and it's more effort to clean. Honestly, I hate the thing and can't wait to dump it back at his house. Puddy tat prefers a £2 tray! 😂

I’ve been pretty happy with my Modkats. I have the xl and the front entry for the outside patio. I mainly like the design as they are sleek and minimal. I know there are self cleaning ones, but the designs are awful... I need to design one 🤓

Why are they using a liner ? What a pain

My dogs love to eat cat shit for some reason on occasion. Do y’all think this will prevent nosey dogs from eating said shit?
@AllAboutCatsYT2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Unless your dog has a giraffe-like neck, they won't be able to access the poop in there. :)

What happens when the urine stream SLAMS into the sides then splashes back onto the cats? Clumping Litter will stay wet & smell if it's up against the walls. It does NOT fully clump when interrupted, it falls apart & breaks up causing the stench in the 1st place. The sides above the Litter Line will have exposed cat pee all the time. So if your pulling that wet smelly urine soaked sack out every 3 to 4 months that has to be so unfair to anyone's cats. Cat pee does NOT come out their pee hole & head down each time at a 45 degree angle. It sprays straight back Fast & Hard, (like when you pee) that strong urine stream travels ONTOP of the litter line than SLAMS into the side, that then SPLASHES all over. This must be cleaned IT"S CAT PEE for heaven sake! This is the reason why there is cat pee outside the box when it's not set up correctly. goes right over that edge.... (i'm making videos with glass fish tanks to prove exactly what causes all the problems & showing how horrible most litters are & WHY) once you see WHY then you can fix it. This box IS NOT the answer! A cats avg. pee is 1/8 of a cup times 6 to 8 times a day. Add to that this very tight space And the fact that when they push back to jump out their options have been taken away. They can't jump over or go around what they just did in there, they HAVE to step in crap or pee to get out...YUCK. Then when they enter they have to either step on theirs or another cats poop or clump.... which then starts to break apart if it's shitty litter like a lot of name brands are. That then turns into "litter urine" This is the kiss of death. (much more happens when pee hits that bottom) Kudos for cats that won't go in that awful stench hole. I'll take some clean "scatter" over wet clumps or poop on paws any day. This is like you telling a guest to go outside, go around back, get the ladder go to the front window, climb up & in, & awaiting them is a wet unflushed toilet that has urine on the floor & seat plus hours of unflushed waste from others, climb back out & put the ladder back.........OMG.......I love my cats too much, so I spent the time & fixed all of it. A LOT of time, many experiments & I learned a TON about all Litters. Do yourself a favor get a security camera (get a cheap bin) & WATCH what happens in that box, it will amaze you! You can't fix something if you don't know what's wrong. You need the right box, the right amount of boxes, the right litter, the right amount of litter, the right scoopers (NOT just 1 urine soaked filthy one either.... you can't clean something with dirty tools.) You need the right mats & garbage too. Miss one of these & it won't work. When it's set up right It's SO much easier & cleaner (& cheaper) I have all the math. What each clump costs.... daily, weekly, monthly, yearly times how many cats divided by cost of everything. When it's easier & soooo much less disgusting then you don't mind cleaning it. There are many things you can do when you don't have the time to do it right, & fall behind, the trick is not to let them make more of a mess with the mess....it's like sweeping it under the rug till you get back! And when you do it right the Cat Litter Helps Clean the Cat Litter! It truly is wonderful. Oh no DUST either. none.

I've had this litter box for years, and it is quite disturbing to see a review NOT removing the lid when changing the litter, to then complain that it was a bit difficult changing the litter. 🤦♀️ You ARE supposed to remove the lid when changing the litter, it's super easy. 🤷♀️
@AllAboutCatsYT4 жыл бұрын
Sorry about that! I've realized that it was a mistake to not remove the lid completely.
