Nice work, you could use duplicate special and proxy mode... that way when you make any changes to the original, all proxys auto update :)

You're totally correct. There's actually a tool called Replace Objects which you can use to convert things into an instance if they aren't already so. I made a video about it here kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJOXnpiFhJt3apo
