I prefer my theory of Henry's last words to Camilla being "Never fuck Richard."

I always got a hannibal vibe from Julien, I think he is Dyonisis not in a supernatural way but in the sense that he is a true agent of chaos and sets things in motion ust to see what will happen similarly to Hannibal. I got the feeling that his fear of the Isrami government was more linked to something he 'convinced' the Princess do or take part in rather than anything he suggests. I feel like I could write an entire essay comparing Julien and Hannibal

i think since delusion is such an overarching theme in the book, it makes sense that julian acts as and sees himself as dionysus/ a dionysian figure because he’s just as fanatical as the students, not that he is the literal embodiment of the deity. i think tartt eludes to it because it gives the book a fantastical feel, like magical realism without there really being any. the way richard writes the story is so romantic and dreamy it causes us to fall for the cult that is the greek class, even if one of the main takeaways from the book is that we shouldn’t romanticize dangerous things because they’re beautiful. the book almost reads like an initiation pamphlet for a cult. seeing julian as a cult leader does implicate him for the murder of the farmer imo. since it’s so clear he’s grooming the students, you have to ask what is he grooming them for? if he was only grooming them for romance/ sex it would probably be more prevalent and wouldn’t be reserved mostly for henry. so i think it’s more likely he groomed them to fulfill his god complex, he wanted them to kill for him, to sacrifice themselves and their bodies because he thinks he is a god.

Love this video! But I think Julian being Dionysus or adding a magical realism element to the book would negate the book's message on the importance of staying grounded in reality as opposed to believing in ancient, mythical ideals that shouldn't be applied to today's society

@@tapioca181 agreed! but also holding that belief while actively trying not to join a cult while not knowing you’re being indoctrinated the entire time (and by you, i mean the reader) is so genius that i wouldn’t even mind it hehehe imo 🫂

Hmm, maybe it was a way for Julien to take advantage of Camilla without any teacher-student incident happening. The scene at the beginning when Richard attempts to talk to Julien in his office, and Julien tries to get Richard to fyck off, because he was having a 1 on 1 meeting with Camilla. That's one of the rare incidents of Julien seeing anyone alone with him besides Henry. I wonder if Julien encouraged them, knew where and when they were going to try and then showed up to SA Camilla when everyone was all out of their minds?

liked your theory that Richard is a liar and that he actually was brought up in Texas. but I also want to point out that Tartt makes it clear that the world of TSH is different than ours. for example, she uses the name "the Isramic goverment" obviously reference to the Islamic republic of Iran in the world of TSH, but she specifically uses that name in order to signal to us that we can't always theorize based on real world information. Anyway, loved your videos about the book!

I don't care for the supernatural aspect, and I think the hint to the missing people and gutted farmer is in the name of The Catamount Motel. Catamount is an old shortening of Cat of the Mountain. A Mountain Lion or cougar. They are not believed to live their now but definitely did in the past. A big 140lb tom cougar would have no problem preying on drunken farmers, solitary young women, or special needs kids.
@bigdumb14 ай бұрын
Not to mention they literally saw a cougar driving at night at one point (it was just Richard and Francis in the car, if I'm remembering right). I know it's not exactly the same area but my mom went to college in western Massachusetts (Mount Holyoke in Amherst) and while she was living there she stayed at a cabin in the woods with some friends. One day, they saw a mountain lion. They do still exist in the rural and mountainous parts of New England.
