When I first heard about Monkey Man, I thought it was a biopic about ROBIN Williams. Then I thought that Robin Williams would probably have enjoyed being depicted as a monkey. Then I thought it was weird that Robin Williams was being portrayed as a Brit… it took me a little bit to realize it wasn’t about Robin Williams.

No it's because it looks like a pretentious headache of a film. The trailer shows us a monkey person and then says "I'm Robbie Williams, I'm one of the most famous people in the world." I'm 30 years old and American and I've never heard of this guy. If he really was as famous as he claims then Americans would be the first to know about him so the whole "oh you're American" isn't an excuse and neither is "well he was more famous years ago" there are artists who only had 4 years of an active career and everyone knows who they were. Next a biopic is not original. This may be an original concept for a biopic but biopics are not original. I havent seen this movie but I know what to expect. It's going to start off with him either as a baby or a child, we're going to see him become a singer and rise to stardom but then fall due to various reasons and then be humbled by his fall and then find solace in making his current career what it is but accepting he wont be as famous as he was before but that's ok. Is that basically the plot? Thats literally what almost every biopic does and its so predictable and exhausting. I want biopics like the SNL movie where we see a very specifc moment in someone's life. I think.those are good biopics but Scorsese is a master at making biopics however his films are an exception. Most biopics that arent directed by scorsese are boring. I personally thought the Bob Dylan movie was just good but not great

And for him to release a film like 20 years after he stopped being relevant, with absolutely no context behind why his character was a monkey that talks whilst everyone else is human. Is such a Robbie Williams thing to do 😂 I can’t believe he didn’t see how much of a failure this was going to be before he started making it. If they did the film with robbie williams as him self then it would of come across as self induldgent but as a ape it works. robbie williams is a large uk star with best known song angels. He is not as known in america so the movie was never really going to make alot of money but I can tell you after watching it, the work that went into making it should of earned its money, it was amazing. I get that, I was pointing more to the originality of projects, even though it homages so much haha, but fair point It’s nuts that the Substance was 18 mil, the brutalist like 10mil I think? You can do it right and well, the suits just have to realize how the audience landscape has shifted- again, shame because it’s a good movie and to your point, actually more appeal I think doing it R also makes it harder, not that they shouldn’t make the best story, I actually respect that, but they probably missed a huge chunk right there

The reality is people like to complain about Hollywood rehashing the same ideas and IPs and want original and creative films, but when comes down to it originality is risky and repeating something that’s known to work is the safer bet. It’s at the point where you could make a subpar reboot or sequel to a beloved property and it still has a higher chance of making money over something untested and new like this.

When Hollywood has dragged big time IPs in the mud for the past decade, with poor director and executive choices, it's hard to convince the general audience who have lost trust in your quality to suddenly give a chance to a biopic.

I remember Robbie Williams purely for Rock DJ, found it as a young teen on one of those pop greatest hits of x year cd's.. and then youtube searched the video and that became the most insane music video I saw for quite a while. Fun song too.

The concept makes sense, Instead of using himself as a way to tell a story about his rise to fame he uses a monkey to make the character a little more sympathetic. It’s actually an interesting idea but not enough to fool me into watching it 😂

Better Man is a fresh and different variation of the "A Star is Born"-theme with actual pop hits. But the makers overestimated Robbie Williams star power.

What people don’t know is these studios don’t factor in marketing cost into budgets. It’s common practice to double their stated budget after marketing. So $220 million for a less than $20M box office is insane. Also, Robbie Williams sucks and so does his movie.
