I remember seeing your story on ANF earlier this year. You're across town from me more than an hour drive one way. I wish you would've been at PDK, I probably would've gambled with you. Glad to see you're finally coming alive.

Good luck in your endeavor! Got my private certificate from a school in that building over 20 years ago. Glad to see it still standing.

I did a simulator once and learned a lot. Ironically I finally understood what "looking out the airplane" meant (navigating with landmarks). And was able to practice many many landings very quickly. Not to mention trying out some crazy things to see what would happen. So having affordable simulators is a good idea and allows for more affordable learning. Since most pilots exceed the minimum hours needed to get a license.

Mike, Glad to see you back up and running. Was sad to see you leave GSO. I think that this is an excellent idea, my question would be how long until the regulations catch up. I have not looked into changes lately as I have been a commercial pilot for a while now. I seem to remember that back in the day that there was a limit to how many sim hours you could apply toward ratings. Another question would be for those that are career minded how the sim time impacts your total time. Thanks again for all you are doing, and thanks for sharing your journey with those of us that are like minded.

Good questions. There are several regs to consider here. 1. MOSAIC - hopefully passes soon so we can use more affordable aircraft for full training without all the current limitations. 2. TTA - Having a technically advanced aircraft already allows you to train in the same SLSA from 0 to commercial. 3. AATD SIM - currently a student is able to log 2.5 hours for ppl, 20 hours for IFR, 50 hours for commercial and 25 hours for SIM in an AATD flight SIM like the one we have. The real question is: even with the current rules, does it make sense for a student to spend more time in the SIM and learn all they can on the ground without being able to log the hours? if the student saves $150-$200 per hour, thats a strong argument that can save the student and operator up to $12,000 per rating.

Awesome job Mike looks pretty cool.. I'll say simulators are just not the same thing as flying the airplane especially for PPL. You NEED to be in the cockpit to figure it out.

You said the flight sim allows you to log time for multi engine and commercial, what about Private/Sport pilot lic? Thanks

That can be smart, ultimately it's information you sell and information can approach zero cost. They don't get to take the plane home when they leave, it's just information. So building skill in sim can be very smart to the extent that it resembles the real thing and doesn't reduce the skill. Indeed you can overcompensate with 'free' hours and get superior pilots. And LSA is 5x cost reduction on a cessna and can be a nicer flying experience. Since it's your base you should be able to source mogas unless there are some difficult regulations regarding that. I was quoted 83k$ for a brand new Vampire 600 with chute. Seems like a nice plane but doesn't have glass but maybe that can be added. Certainly is a better price than many others. 300k for an LSA is ridiculous. There is a business opportunity there as well. Risen is an easy concept to copy and they charge 350k$. Glass and engine aside it might cost less than 25k$ to make one. So just the overpriced glass costs more than the plane and the engine is double. With a good glide and low weight you can skip the flaps and you can make very skinny aerodynamic fixed gear to avoid the complexity of retract. Single piece fuselage it's a simple yet high performance plane.

Can y'all start a flight school in ohio, or at least talk somebody into it. I would love to become a pilot, but the problem is I'm afraid of flying. HOWEVER, if at all possible, I would certainly train with no fear in a plane w/ a safety parachute.

I am not interested in becoming a commercial pilot anymore, looking back I should have gone into the AIR FORCE and let the government pay for my flight training. 😮 I have been trying to get my PPL since 2007, I have passed the written 2 times failed the first time, all of my instructors have wasted my time and money in order to advance themselves to achieve their ultimate goal of getting to flying the heavy iron. This is a common practice of a lot of CFIs, many are simply not good teachers. I would love to attend your school but I can’t take the time off to travel to GA even that you are only 4 hours away from me, but that’s how life is.

Craig, you should do online ground school. Passing the written is not too difficult relative to the other parts of PPL training. Check out King Schools Private Pilot.

I started flying in 1992,prices were great, military paid for commercial instrument, I paid for multi engine, the word is sacrifice, sacrifice everything and become successful

You have to treat it like you're the teacher. I read my books 3 times and still watched all 150 videos on Sportys ground school twice to prepare myself form the written and oral for my PPL. It still took mem63 logged hours flying before I passed everything and got my ticket. If you want it bad enough you'll do it.
