Can't stop looking at that legendary little cabin fan...it has served on so many Russian aircraft/rotorcraft, I wonder they're all made by one manufacturer?
@LtRiot3 жыл бұрын
Maybe they made 20k of them in the 50s and just move them into the next platforms when they come along Bigbrain gulag. One fan. Many decades service. Highly decorated
@barjan823 жыл бұрын
There are two types of this fan, the first is the DV-3 (ДВ-3 in Russian) and the other is the DV-302T (ДВ-302T in Russian). They both run on 27V DC power.

We have a MIL2 on display at the museum at Weston Super Mare. This machine was the first to have twin turbine engines mounted on top of the fuselage, giving much more cabin space compared to older machines with piston engine mounted below the main rotor

Hi guys, Those two failed start-up attempts were caused by damaged external power supply, it didn't provide enough power/energy for engines to ignite. Pilot decided to use on-board batteries after second failed attempt (as he says it @ 0:56), and it has nothing to do with engine temperature.
@barjan823 жыл бұрын
Well, those were not failed start attempts. Those were done on purpose and called engine 'dry spool' when you spin both engines for ~25seconds after each other without fuel and ignition. You have to do this 'dry spooling' on the Mi-2 (and other Russian helis) if the engines sat a couple days without running. After the dry spool is complete, the pilot flips the switch to dowh position at 0:52 on the engine start panel from 'dry spool' to 'engine start'. When the engine start cycle is started the igniters can be heard.
@fmaj65023 жыл бұрын
@@barjan82 Is the term for dry spool "Crank"? On the simulator DCS: Mi-24 the engines have a switch to "Crank" and "Start".
@barjan823 жыл бұрын
@@fmaj6502 I don't know the DCS simulator, but i think the function is the same. Difference is that in case of the Mi-2 you spool/crank the engine via the starter-generator, in case of the Mi-24 with the TV3 engine you crank/spool the engine with bleed air from the APU.
@barjan823 жыл бұрын
Those onboard batteries weren't that 'fresh' here. Mi-2 in it's factory config has two 24V Lead Acid/NiCad batteries which on startup first connected parallel to power starter-generator with 24V, then connected in series to apply '48V' to the starter for a faster engine spool. On the start sequence the 24V to 48V parallel-series connection is hardly moticable in the engine sound.

the indicator with the yellow sticker is the fuel gauge the reason its moving so much is because the fuel is moving in the tank from side to side (sloshing)
@intoxicologist10011 жыл бұрын
two cold starts are required to reduce turbine temp. you cant start a turbine if it is already hot. you must run it on the battery with no fuel so the airflow brings the temp down. once the outlet temp is within range you can start it normally. this is why you have the guy in the red jumpsuit. he is providing ground power so the pilot does not have to use his battery to cool the turbine.
@LogMyWorld11 жыл бұрын
Interesting, thanks for clarifying. I was wondering for a while what it indicates. Strange they don't have dividers in the tank to avoid the sloshing which most fixed wing aircraft have.

Interesting info, thanks. This means the engines must have operated not too long before we boarded the aircraft. I had no idea the outlets are the critical piece in the engine, thought the turbine discs were more critical. Do you by chance know which indicator in the cockpit shows the engine outlet temperature? And I'd love to find out what the indicator with the yellow sticker is for, it doesn't seem to be very accurate.

@intoxicologist That's not correct on these engines. The temperatures are TIT (Turbine Intake Temperature) and are taken by a ring of thermocouples just before the static vanes at the exit of the combustion chamber. The GTD-350 has a slightly unusual fueling arrangement with a single main injector. The combustion instability gives it a unique bass rumble!

the temp gauges are the 2 round one bottom right. they show a very low temp though so i am not sure the pilot is cooling the turbines. maybe the procedure is to run the turbine just in case for a mil mi. in any case the gauges are 0 to 10 . so 6 is actually 600 deg.

the oulets are not critical, its just where the temp is taken from. the internal compression blades and ignition chamber parts are critical. these can melt if they get too hot say 800 deg for 5 seconds or 1000 for 1 second
@MickB23511 жыл бұрын
engine outlet temperature is measured on the TOT(turbine outlet temp) ,ITT(internal turbine temp) ,Turb out or EGT (exhaust gas temp)this applies more to reciprocating or piston engines) guage on the instrument panel .If a start is attempted with the TOT too high it can roast the turbine causing very expensive damage. The instrument with the yellow sticker on it quite possibly could be unserviceable with the colour & presence of the sticker indicating as such
