Molly Goddard: inspired by Balenciaga

London based designer Molly Goddard draws on many influences: fashion photography, sketches by her sister and 1950s Cristóbal Balenciaga. Goddard is best known for her tulle party dresses, which closely resemble the triangular 'trapeze' shaped 'baby doll' dresses Balenciaga introduced in 1958. In this interview, Goddard creates a miniature version of one of her signature tulle dresses, while discussing how her work is influenced by Balenciaga's surprising use of scale and volume, and what she describes as a subversive "ugliness" in Balenciaga's clothing.

This is what happens when a once great museum "dumbs down" because their curators no longer know what they are talking about. You get posh 'gels' making frocks for babies and chatting utter rubbish about 'volume' and always going back to her 'Balenciaga books' possibly because she is related to a curator or one of them thinks her dresses are 'divine' and she is the best thing since Waitrose started stocking avocados...
