They came to an old Motorcycle Dirt Track out in Surry VA, with Blackfoot, the Outlaws, & .38, every Summer for a few years. One year in the mid-80s , they had put up a net in front of the stage all day, and when Danny Joe got ready to do "Flirtin", he had gained weight, but he still climbed up the edge of the stage, & ripped that net down, between the crowd & the band. After all day in the Summer Sun, the crowd went wild.

This was a magic time. I'm very thankful I was alive back during the late seventies and early eighties. There will never be any music, live performances and energy that will match bands like this. Seeing bands live like Molly Hatchet, UFO, Blackfoot, Scorpions, Def Leppard, Van Halen, KISS and Rush was an honor and an experience that will never be matched. No cell phones, no drama, no bullshit. Just full blast, in your face, ROCK AND FUCKIN ROLL. RIP to the boys in Molly Hatchet.

One hell of a band and one of my all time favorite songs!! Interesting story albeit kind of lengthy for you molly fans...last year in early may I took a vacation down to middleburg Florida to ride motorcycles with my brother as he lives down there. On may 17th we wound up at the American legion on 218 in middleburg to throw back a few before heading home. It was a Tuesday night and getting pretty late with just a few of us up at the bar When we overheard the door man ask the bar tender if a member of molly hatchet could come in for a night cap. We looked at each other like no way! Well of course she said yes and in walked Dave hlubek and his lady friend. She sat next to me and Dave sat on the other side of her at the bar. I nodded to them as if to say hey and they ordered their drinks. Hers was non alcoholic as she was driving. My brother and I talked about whether we should acknowledge that we knew who he was but we also didn't want to bother them. So I had a idea that I thought might get his attention. I've got an app on my phone called touch tunes where you can play the juke box off of your phone via internet. So from my bar stool on my phone I looked up (dreams I'll never see) and hit play. We waited to see if he had any reaction. Well he did! When the song started playing he got a big grin on his face and looked around and said-that's me! And done a little bit of an air guitar to the riff. Well that broke the ice and I admitted to playing it. We all laughed and introduced ourselves. For the next 1/2 hour or so we talked about various things, a little about skynyrd and how Dave knew ronnie real well. They both were the nicest people and we had a great time. As they were leaving we ended up getting a pic with them. Never dreamed I'd get to play that song to Dave hlubek! Lol true story

That's a great story. I have one myself it was back when Molly Hatchet toward with 38 special in the outlaws it was at the Hollywood sportatorium down in Miami after the concert me and my buddies decided to go to a bar where a band called Dixie was playing. When we got into the bar Dixie just finished their last song and went on break so we ordered our drinks and we're sitting at the table and the next set came up and Molly Hatchet walks on stage and plays the whole set they were friends with the band dixie and came there to party after the concert that was a great night and one that I will remember for the rest of my life. These guys were awesome musicians and just all-around great guys.

Listen to his lyrics. I had the privilege to shake hands and pray with Danny Daniels on his impromptu biker track biker concert in the woods of Hampton, Virginia in 1984. Only announced on FM Radio 4 hours before the concert. $20 cash at the gate. I watched Danny drink a half gallon of Jack Daniels while singing on stage behind a 40 foot tall chain link fence... and people trying to scale it. At 3 AM us 10 groupies, 8 chicks and 2 dudes, watched as Danny came out his bus at 3 AM and signed tits. Then, he slung his arm around my neck, and said: "Let us pray. Dear God, please keep us safe from the drunk drivers tonight. Amen" Then Danny smiled at me and jumped on his bus. Rest in Peace Danny. You totally rock, dude.

graham hedrick Yep. I turned 13 in late 1980, so my teenage years were during that decade. I listened to what accurately should have been referred to as "alternative rock", which means heavy metal and hard rock. Because the local Philly radio stations weren't playing much of it. You rarely heard Molly Hatchet or Rainbow or ANY metal bands on radio. But by this time, I've also come to like a lot of the popular "80's music" that was played on the radio back then. But after the 80s ended, music began a slow decline in quality, that became an all out sprint in about 2000! Nowadays it's often painful to my ears to turn on the radio. These new pop acts are making FAR more money to make FAR worse music!

They were all sweatin by this part of the show. Perkin's Palace had the worst cooling system of the venues this size, and these were the finale of the show. Did I mention how loud but clear the mix was that night? The crowd was wild and the whole show was just magic!

Eric Walker how do you know that? With videos like this I am sure young musicians will use some of it and create their own sounds. I remember when I was a kid and older people would say we didn't know what good music was because we didn't want to play Buddy Holly or Elvis but they were influential. Music and everything else changes but if you listen and look you will see and hear all of the various influences from Chuck Berry, Little Richard etc. I am just happy that there are still bands who actually play instruments with all of the computer stuff that is available.

The classic lineup, the first two albums. I was there, this was the first concert I ever saw where they actually sounded like their records. Most bands back then simply jammed, as a guitarist myself it blew me away how tight they sounded!

Also a guitarist, and I need to second that statement. The original Hatchet lineup (the one shown here--Roland, Hlubek, and Holland) were better in terms of staying in tune and in synch with each other than the far better known Lynyrd Skynyrd. Though at the time, we considered Duane Roland the lead in terms of pure chops, in all of the live vids you can find with this trio in the late 70s and early 80s . . . . Hlubek and Holland don't give an inch. So tight, so much fun to watch. I didn't get to see this lineup unfortunately. I did see Hatchet in upstate NY in a huge roadhouse. Roland and Hlubek handled all of it superbly, and they had a real grand piano on stage--that balance was extraordinary. Must have been 1000 bikers there and they just damn blew the roof off.

When I was young I worked for Concerts West, Alex Cooley, and was on the permanent guest list for the Agora. I saw every band there ever was . No bs. I was at the Fox for what was the major market introduction of Molly Hatchet and Black Foot. Holy moly. Listeing to this still puts lead in my pencil. Best concert I have aver been to was Molly Hatchet and The Outlaws. And I have seen a lot of great bands, Springsteen in 1976 and a couple more, The Who, The Stones, George Thorogood, Steve Winwood, Steve Vai, Yes a couple of times, Tom Petty, Dire Straits, Rush a couple of times, The Police, Van Halen, plus a wide variety of bands in Athens, GA etc. The Outlaws and Molly Hatchet to this day laid down one of the best concerts I have ever seen. Hell maybe it was just because I was 15, but those guys just played and played and you could tell they were into it and having fun. Didn't seem like they were sticking to a playlist. It was more like they were just jamming, playing stuff they loved to play. And all those other concerts were pretty damn good in their own right.

I saw these guys at Palmer Auditorium Davenport, Iowa in 78 or 79. My friends and I were in the front row left side as you looked at the stage. We were setting our beers on the stage and talking to Danny Joe between songs. A security guy approached us during a song and was harassing us to move our beers. Danny Joe came over and told him to leave us alone or he was leaving the show, not us! How cool is that!

I was able to see these guys 3 times during thier great years.... it was mid blowing. Danny was such a strong voice and it really made a difference in the way the band played. The last time was during their strongest year and a wall of southern attitude with DJB leading the charge. DJB can never be replaced and while the current band has no real original members I wish them the best cuz they sure have big shoes to fill.

I have seen the current version and the original version. New is good, but the original version was GREAT! Unless something has changed recently, the new band does have one original member, Dave Hlubek.

You are absolutely on point. For my money, there was no better trio ever in any genre when it came to pure guitar chops. Roland, Hlubek, and Holland were each exceptional lead players. But far more than that, each of them were exceptional RHYTHM players. I'm always surprised how few front rank guitarists are actually great at both forms. But ADD to that how well they switch off. AND not just switch off, but can have two or all three synch on a lead, or two or all three harmonize on a lead. And the final key element is that they almost always were able to get in and out of the swaps with the overall balance still basically flawless. The tone, tune, volume all work in any combination. I don't find that with any of the other contemporary southern rock lineups that ever used a trio, including Skynyrd. So why did Holland leave relatively early? I think he came back once. But the lineups after the original one in this video changed endlessly from then on. And you can tell (hear) right away from any post-original Hatchet lineup vid it was NEVER was anywhere NEAR this good again. So Holland was clearly essential to how well this worked. Maybe it was an ego thing?
